Well having being utterly horrified at the dire mess that was Saw II, I wasn't holding out much hope for this one.

However I have to say, in comparison to the second this one was a vast improvement. Far more inventive than the second and much better acted too. However Angus Mcfayden?? Surprised at him choosing this role...much as I was surprised at Donnie Wahlberg for appearing in the pile of crap, Saw II. However, as I was saying, definitely an improvement on the second. But naturally not a patch on the first.

I said it in my review of Saw II, and I'll say it here. Any 'horror' that exuded from the first one was in part because of the unknown.... until the end we didn't know who was doing this or what he looked like. We watched the movie unfold as the two leads tried to discover what linked them and why they could possibly be victims of whoever had done this to them. However in two and three we have Jigsaw as a continuous and unmasked presence throughout. Him wanting to 'play a game' in person is not quite the same as hearing his voice on a tape recorder.

And with Saw III, it goes one step further by going back to the first and explaining/showing the whole set up of the first. Which, by now, we already know. We don't need to see it all played out, it just detracts from the first one.

Basically, Saw III is an improvement on the second. More engaging and more inventive. However with Jigsaw in our faces the whole time, the 'horror' of the mocked up life/death scenarios become more about the gore/disgustingness of them as opposed to the dread of, who's this guy and why/how is he doing this. Gratuitous is probably the word that springs to mind here.

If you're desperate to see the whole trilogy and have already seen the first two then I'd probably say go and watch this. Its more enjoyable than the second.

However if you've just watched the first or the first and second and are unsure then don't bother. Just leave it at that...especially if you've only seen the first. Watching the other two will somewhat ruin the enjoyment/memory of the first.

I loved the first, liked the second. But this one was tedious. Especially all the flash backs to the first and second films. Clearly filler. Ironically the gore cancelled this one's affectiveness as a horror. Hopefully there will be no more of these movies.

I really liked Saw, hated Saw 2 so wasn't fussed about seeing this one but found myself with a few hours to kill so thought why not (see the film that is, not commit murder!)?
To be honest it was much better than expected with some good gruesome moments to keep the gorehpunds entertained.
My biggest problem with it was the same as with Saw 2 in that I hated the Amanda character and just found her irritating. Her use of the C word for shock value missed the mark by a mile and failed miserably. Too many unnecessary flashbacks also, but all in all I thought it was entertaining enough.

My issues with Saw 3:

did we really need the operation scene?! Did nothing but take up 10 minutes of screen time that could have been filled with plot (I'll get to that one in a bit)

the countless flash backs to the previous films were unneccesary to say the least and did nothing to advance the plot.

like Saw 2 its full of dumb characters that you could'nt care less about

"pushing the boundaries of taste" is what the creators call it but all it did was bore me

please stop with the flashy, quick, speedy editing. It does'nt disturb, it annoys

and finally......NO F**KIN PLOT and a joke of an ending that left me thinkin WTF because of all the flashy editing that seemed to erase my memory.

That is all! Roll on Saw 4!!

i thought the flash backs were cool, well, they were good anyway. it explains how a man dying of cancer set up all these traps; she was in it from

the start!!! that was great!

i watched this after work this evening, and to be honest, i spent most of the time hiding behind my jacket, and i couldnt eat my hotdog (a waste!)...i know im a wimp... although im not usually that bad. honest. i watched the other two on rental, so the big screen was a bit too much for me, hardcore nastiness, the grossest one for me, worst bits for me was the guy smashing his foot to bits, and the guy getting everything in a twist.... as everyone has made clear, and to which i agree... 1st was best, 2nd the worst, this not as bad as 2,missing the cleverness and twists the 1st one had... but by far, most definately the yuckiest!!!

Not bad, but not great either.
As someone has already said, if you have only seen the first, I probably wouldn't bother with the second and third installments. Saw is a great stand-alone film, and it was much better leaving us asking who? why? etc.

Amanda was very irritating, and seemed like the character had been twisted just to fit the story. Overall, it just seemed like the story had been rushed as it had potential to tie up loose ends, and be left as a trilogy. I think it's quite clear it's been set up for a fourth film.
Though can someone explain to me what actually happened to the cop Eric? The flashback showed Amanda going back to finish him off, but did we actually see him die? Just wandered as Jigsaw made a mention of having to clean up Amanda's mess.
Think Dinah Meyer's death was a bit pointless to the story really, unless I'm not seeing the bigger picture here, she could've been left to continue the chase in part 4?

Perhaps I'm reading too much into a horror film!

This is better than Saw 2. It has loads of blood and bone crunching. It also develops the story a bit and fills in some gaps from the previous film. Nice twist at the end and a cliff hanger for Saw 4.

What is this at the end of the day but an excuse to offend? Yes, it does that quite well, but the third movie is not as well conceived as the first one, but better than the second. I thought it was good value for money and I managed to stay awake all the way through, which is more than can be said for the the second one.

Giving it a three is like giving Borat a five (nudge to Empire here). Whilst on first viewing it seems worthy of the mark, on reflection there are too many things that aren't great about it to give it your initial score.

I'd plump for a two. (and a half, if it was allowed)

I thought the first one was great, the second one not so good but this one...

It's rubbish & not scary. The acting is atrocious, the plot a totally pathetic joke, the gory scene were very fast, as gory as possible without any point leaving you to just cringe but not care, the ending painfully long with “educational” flashbacks for anyone not remembering 1 & 2 or that were senile enough to not remember what happened 10min ago, filled with boring predicable “twist” after “twist” leaving a ‘message’ & it went on and on and on and on…

Mr Ria said it was one of the worst films he’d ever seen & that the people that allegedly fainted whilst watching it must have done so out of boredom...

What a let down this was. The best thing about this was the torture scenes, which to be fair is the key selling point. They were truely painful to watch, one particular scene has a guy with loads of hooks attached to him, a bit like a scene from Hellraiser. Apart from the grotesque torture, the film doesn't have anything else to offer. It spends most of its time in flashbacks to Saw 1 and 2, mostly showing things we already knew and only explaining a tiny bit extra which we really didn't need to know. The plot just seems to be streching now just to get another film and doesn't really convince, and once again there's a 'shock' ending which doesn't really shock. If you want to see some pretty nasty scenes then this is worth it, the opening credits are particularly painful. But, if your looking for an intelligent, well crafted film like the original then you'll be sadly disappointed

I saw(!!) this last night, it was ok, some nice gruesome moments but ot as good as the 1st or even the 2nd. The most entertaining thing for me was watching my girlfriend cower behind her jacket. Not much of a plot, lets hope they leave it at that, not sure how it would go into a 4th, but they probably will.

Good, scary stuff. Even at the third film, the twists and turns of the plot were unpredictable and unexpected. There are some very tense sequences, although by this stage the gore is becoming more and more prevalent. Overall, it's a great end to the trilogy - if it is the end - and better than the almost-as-good second film.

And Tobin Bell got top billing, which is abviously a great thing.

1st saw, ok. 2nd saw, poo. 3rd saw, very smelly poo. this is such a naff film. how anyone can say it's scary. at the cinema i work at i've had to shut the film down twice beacuse of people fainting, at bloody what that's what i want to know, it can't be the film, maybe it's our prices. where's all the intelligent horror gone, how many times must were see this same old cack.

Shit film... not as good as the first two, the plot was a non existant yet still far too complicated shambles... the torture scenes were alright but that if we're honest, that's all the production company and director give a shit about, everything else is a side issue. It's like porn, if the shagging's good, who gives a fuck about the rest?

Will they make another? Of course... the Saw and Scary Movie franchises will just keep feeding each other in a big circle of crap.

Hopefully we've now seen the last of the Saw franchise (although considering the box-office figures of this one, i doubt it). This one wasn't as bad as I thought it might be. Better than the second but not a patch on the originality of the first (despite Danny Glover's over the top theatrics). The acting was pretty good (up until the end when it got a bit silly - I almost laughed out loud when Jeff makes his decision) but wheras the gore in the first added to the tension and feel of the film, this time it's there just for the queeze factor. By the way if you have trouble enduring the hobbling scene in Misery then don't even think of seeing this film!.

Ridiculous, needlessly brutal, horrendously disgusting yet hugely and disturbingly inventive. Good acting, direction and grimy cinematography are impressive but the script leaves the real bad taste in the mouth here. No wait, its the torture. Where can horror go from here until it becomes real death?

2 stars? Bit harsh I think. OK so it's not as good as the first or the second but it was OK - really thought the last 20 mins or so were good with a nice twist. And Iliked the way it linked all 3 films together. But please - no Saw 4!!

i actually threw up. i'm 14 but that's not the point. this movie should've never reached the theaters. a great twist but i prefer the second one. do not let a fourth one be released. although they anounced that they'll be starting soon. i think it would've helped if you weren't alone. but i think it was alright. whatever i managed to undrestand from the plot after consentrating on being so shocked....... trully if you managed to watch this and you're younger you're simply not serious. or you try to make fun of the film and ruining it for you and all the others around you.got to go. late for my psychiatrists first appointment! =p

Better than the second which despite its premise weas absolutely shit! Saw III stretches the boundaries of your imagination a bit but its a welcome return to the twisty turny plot of the original. Some absoluetly gruesome toture devices here and that scene at the beginning where Donnie Whalberg breaks his foot with the lid of the toliet where very well done. However this excellent work is undone by over the top moments such as the brain surgery which was gruesome but so unrealistic. All in all if you switch your brain off its 3 star entertainment no performers stand out but in this sort of movie its not what you really worried about is it? Gore fans will enjoy!

I thought SAW 3 was rather good. THough it was not as good as the first or second it was still very enjoyable. Like Hostel theres loads of violence and the violence in this violence is simply torture. I thought the pig guts scene was just disgusting but the brain surgery was amazing. Overall i think this is really good but it should of been better. Loads better.

Disagree, with the empire review, sorry Kim Newman. This installment was much better than the bland second chapter. Although this one slightly down on story line did result to using a hell of alot of gore to excite its audience, it worked and therefor resulted in a genrally good chapter. it is good.
