An absolutely classic, timeless piece of art. I don't know about anyone else, but American Beauty is, for me at least, an exact interpretation of life. There's no need for me to go on about it anymore - just watch it, for crying out loud!

It's a a superb modern tale of American suburbia, riveting performances from Spacey and Benning complement one another brilliantly, adding a significant twist of poignancy on a film that never takes itself too seriously. A modern classic.

The most beautiful film I have ever seen - 7/2/2007 4:33:03 PM

Look Closer.....
It's been 7 years since Hollywood treated us to Sam Mendes's film directing debut and no film I have seen since then can compare to the masterpiece known as 'American Beauty'. This film is the most beautiful film I have ever seen. Kevin Spacey is absolutely perfectly cast as our troubled protaganist Lester Burnham living the American dream in middle class America suburbia, who on becoming infatuated by his daughter Jane's friend Angela, decides to reinvent his life. The film is so good as it touches on real life issues within the routine of family society and thrives upon a number of issues of defining what beauty is, control, imprisonment, drugs and sexuality in a serious but at the same time humourous technique. The film teaches us that beauty is seen in all facets of life and not based purely (if at all) on appearances or how things may look on the surface, as undeneath people are not always who they seem. Mendes portrays the vision of different beauty brilliantly through Wes Bentley's Ricky who finds beauty in a 'dancing bag' as opposed to Mena Suvari's provocatively narcisistic Angela who only sees her looks as the ultimate definition of beauty and that this is enough to prosper and be successful in life.

The movie is a classic case of imitating life and so all of us can relate to at least one of the issues raised within it. The cinematography is almost originally unique and Mendes use of camera shots, and his switch between film camera and video camera footage generates such positive meaning that at times you just don't care what is going on in the scene as you are so captivated as to how beautiful the shots look. Lesters fantasy sequences about Angela are eloquently poetic which is greatly contributed by Thomas Newmans moving musical score.
The film deserved to win the oscar for best picture and to me is still number one in my eyes as one of the best films ever made. It is a fantastic black comedy which I recommend everybody see and lea

The film, "American Beauty" is possibly the best film ever made! It includes the wonders of superb acting from its superior cast, stylish film techniques and it is directed by Sam Mended. When all of these characteristics are added together, a masterpiece is born and "Oscars" are won. As the story develops throughout the film, we begin to understand that life isn't what it seems to look like on the surface and that there are many more layers beneath the surface. "American Beauty" is a most beautiful, moving fable that should be enjoyed by all!

One of the greatest films of all time. The sheer attention to detail is phenomenal. kevin spacey is... phenomenal, the script is... phenomenal. The whole thing is justification for film existing.

I got this on DVD recently, as it is a film that I have seen a handfull of times but is so good.

The performances from Spacey and Chris Cooper are career defining, and the film flows so smoothly despite ignoring the usual constrictions of a film ('start' 'middle' 'end') with one of the best soundtrack of the decade.

Such an involving film, that makes you laugh, yet at the same time the film asks the audience to justify the actions of all the characters.

Proof that there is hope for Hollywood yet, with Mendes being one of the finest young directors about.

this is a film that works wonderfully as a vicious black comedy and satirical jab at american suburbia, but it all gets too "deep" for its own good. it collapses into pure melodrama and soap-opera levels of silliness at the end, which is a shame because the 1st half is near perfect. the whole thing does get rather pretentious and what it ultimately lacks is heart which, for me, makes the end seem horribly jarring and forced, and really not that moving. had they dispelled with the boy-next-door 'beauty' i honestly think this would be a far stronger film. the fact of the matter is that a bag floating in the wind is not that beautiful and it is at this point that the film just disappears up its own bloated arse. taken on their own accord the comic moments work wonderfully and the premise and the characters are so pathetic that i think it would have been more affecting, albeit in a quieter way, without all the dramatic pondering and 'beauty' guff. i'm giving this 4 stars because some of it is fantastic, but it doesn't really equal the sum of its parts. i reckon it would probably have worked better onstage. if you want superior dark-side-of-suburbia go to Lynch...

Stunning. Well-made. And it's not fucking overrated. It's one of the most important movies of the last 50 years. Sam Mendes fucking rules! First-level film. Great Movie. Flawless.

I like Lester Burnham but, no matter how many times I watch this film, I can't work out if I should.

The film is almost flawless. It's view of suburbia is relatable and realistic yet somewhat twisted and eccentric. The script is often very funny and extremely quotable. The acting is good all round and the film manages to really change you're perception of the characters in the last third. The film also serves valuabe messages and themes about how materialism and cleanliness ultimately has destroyed the characters inwardley( particularly with Carolyn) and how emotionally stunted and banal life has become for the characters. A great film

Any film that opens with the a main characters narration informing us of his untimely death, is definitely going to be interesting.
From the opening scene the audience witness first hand the breakdown of the mdoern white picket fenced american family, and witness what happens on the inside.
Like blue velvet before it and desperate housewives after it, this film never has a dull moment and is always waiting to give us a new twist to add to the already almost unfollowable plot.
Lastly alot of people see Sam Mendes the director as a one hit wonder, although a lot of people do not realise that he was to follow this up with the hit U.S black comedy six feet under, another gem in the world of modern entertainment.

Just incredible, its flows perfectly. It was nothing I expected, the blend of comedy, drama and dreamy realism is so well done. The performances are all superb (Spacey's performance is truely brilliant), and each character is stunningly real. A modern classic.

Kevin Spacey has rarely been better than the performance on offer in this profoundly intriguing and undeniably disturbing vision of the American Dream. What begins as little more than a complex character study coupled with waning-marriage drama soon becomes a clever and engaging movie that often feels slow, but never dull. Story is smart, and the leads do great jobs. What more could you want?

Flawlessly cast and brimming with dark, acid wit, American Beauty is a smart, provocative high point of late '90s mainstream Hollywood film.
