 "What is Mammoth Threads?" you may ask.  After many requests, this sub forum was built to free up Off Topic of long running threads that were seen as "clogging up" Off Topic or pushing newer topics down the page.  So from this comes "Mammoth Threads."

New topics cannot be posted to this forum.  Mammoth Threads is a place for long running Off Topic threads to find a home.  Threads located in OT that have 500+ replies will be moved by a moderator to Mammoth. 

However, threads that see no activity in Mammoth for 60 days will be moved back to OT for a chance of revival or to float off into the cyber abyss.

Come in.  Find the long living thread you love and have fun.

 OK. But isn't this thread too short?

I just read on Wikipedia that mammoths weren't actually that big. Although that could be a lie, there's a lot of lies on Wikipedia.

I think it's beyond unlikely that any of the long-runners will go for 30 days without a response, so you should be safe.

 We haven't discussed that at length.  For OT, it inspires chatty type threads and that is how they grow so fast.  So, it probably wont be necessary in other forums.

 I don't like it. Its all of 7 threads on a page that shows about 30. Its hardly making that much difference. Other forums have sticky threads - why not make them sticky? Why move them to a different forum?

Its frankly stupid.

And as for saying that it wouldn't apply to have 'Mammoth' threads in other forums? Why not if we have them in this one. I couldn't give a monkeys which MP3 people want or what is MP3 of the day but I don't complain - I just scroll past it if I want to read something in there.

Of this size? Quite probably. In the old forum there were always a few but never so many you couldn't just scroll past them if you didn't want to read them. Why should it be any different here?

 Others disagree that the threads currently shown here were not a problem in OT.  For that reason, this forum had arrived.

I'm quite sure there will be more than seven threads here over time.  In fact, This Is Me has been going for years.  So, I consider complaints from members that threads like this were shoving newer topics down the page.

Basically we've had enough complaints about the state of Off Topic at the moment that this move seemed worthwhile. If at a later date we are getting a similar number of complaints about other forums then we'll discuss taking action in those areas aswell. Seven sticky threads at the top of a page is rather a lot and it can make the place look quite intimidating to newer members. This way there is no hassle, it takes you an extra five seconds to click into the sub-forum to find the thread you're looking for and no harm is done.

Quite so - nearly all the so called mammoth threads here are replacements of the old OT threads not new threads created. So I don't think there will be much more than there are now.

And I don't think they push other threads further down either - as I say, its about 7 threads so it physically CAN'T push them further down than 7 threads.

People always feel the need to complain - why don't we have a crappy (I'll leave the definition of crappy open to others) thread forum? Or a poll forum? Surely as guilty as anything in this forum.
