Studio's are scared of putting that amount of money into a game adaptation. From what I've read and seen is that Studio's still see game adaptations as silly things that only kids play where the demographic is between 10 to 25 year olds (which is a core cinema audience in my eyes, and why a new agency dealing with game to film adaptations has been set up for about a year). The most successful so far has been the Resident Evil franchise, but they are independently financed and then distrubuted by a studio, they just get the profit out of it. Budgets of most game to films are at the most 60mill, so to double that, and have Microsoft wanting shit loads up front and in pay out at the end, with also a first time feature director, probably no real star names to it also, just leaves the studios in a bit of panic. They probably know it will make loads, and the stuidos wouldnt mind a large chunk out that which they wont get if Wingnut or Mircosoft wanted their share, it seems. But two studios jumping ship is a bit bad, and I cant see New Line doing it after the court case with Jackson. I dont really like the game anyway, they're just my thoughts on the whole thing.
