Yes.
Which wont be a bad thing.

Yes it would. Considering the conflict between him, his Liverpool team at the time, and his complete failure at Inter, it's a worry.

I personally think he'll do well at Chelsea.
Yes your attacking play might come under scrutiny but your teams defensive frailties would soon be eradicated, imo.

Just depends if you do bring him in then how long is he going to be in charge?
Would he be the main man for a considerable of time (2years) ?
Would he be signing/offloading players?

I think he was in prime position because Abramovich thinks he is the best person to get Torres firing again. A "transition" year, which culminates in a Torres that can score again would be something of a success.

Torres' performances have seen off a few managers now!

I don't think an underperforming player has ever got as much support as Torres has got from Chelsea fans. In recent weeks it's slowly started to change from what I've heard.

A quote from Rafa a couple of years ago:

"Chelsea is a big club with fantastic players, every manager wants to coach such a big team. I would never take that job in respect for my former team at Liverpool, no matter what. For me there is only one club in England and that's Liverpool."

Being out of work for a while can change people, eh?

surely John Terry is the only candidate for the job worth considering.

Not in my thinking. Here's my cover letter.

Dear Roman,

Back in 2006 I became manager of Middlesbrough FC. Immediately I set about generating income for the club by selling Downing to Aston Villa for 16.5M. So I have a good understanding of FFP. When one of the senior team members complained about this I told him I managed the team and if he didn't like it I'd transfer list him. I also immediately mutually terminated the contract of Gareth Southgate, showing I can move on aging players. Being popular with the team is not my management style.

I brought in flair players such as the signing of Modric for 1.5M, a flying Brazillian wing back called Ratinho for 2.5M and invested heavily in the attacking strength of Jefferson Farfan for 6.5M. I also flair players such as Gourcuff and Higuain on loan. My team played a solid 4-4-2 using width to penetrate teams and short passes with crosses played into a target man. We experimented with some other set ups and any time I lost a few games in a row I made teams replay the games until I got the result I wanted.

After the first season I had qualified for Europe. In subsequent years I won all major trophies. The league, the FA Cup and the Champions League. I also took on the England manager role, but ultimately got a bit bored with the whole thing and resigned.

I think all of the above makes me an ideal candidate to take several million of your ill-gotten gains for a few months work. I do have a current job, but I don't work Saturdays, so I think I can job share during my month's notice. I am also usually free on Thursday evenings.

BR

Me

Benitez appointed!

Got to say I'm really surprised by the timing of it all. But I never thought RDM was that good - he chanced the CL win and the league performances last year weren't good enough. This season getting knocked out of the CL group stages is a killer for their finances. They only recorded a profit because of the CL win and because the transfers of Oscar, Moses and Hazard weren't included. The transfers of Cahill and Mata were, but incoming fees can be counted over the length of a contract while sales can be banked immediately according to Fifa's accounting rules.

Anyway, I reckon Benitez might do ok. He'll shore up your defence and if anyone can get Torres scoring it's him. I'd be surprised if he stuck with Oscar, Mata and Hazard all at once, but then it would probably be stupid to keep them all in the first XI anyway.

Only RA would bring in a manager to get the best out of one player...he got burnt horribly when HE signed Shechenko and he doesn't want this to happen again.

Decent appointment, although certainly not one to capture the imagination. Difficult to assess his stint at Inter fairly as he was punted far too early.

He's good for snookers in Europe, which naturally Chelsea need in order to stay in the Champions League.

Good point - although given Chelsea only have one natural out & out striker, this might not be such a bad move.

Redknapp isn't on that list? WHAT???

Based on what I've been hearing today from the English media I could have sworn Redknapp was a far more successful manager.

Does the fact that Rafa has in effect accepted a job as caretaker manager (the kind of thing that usually goes to a relatively unknown number 2 to be given his shot that he can step up and manage a team) not an indication of how far he has fallen?

Fucking right... I think Benitez is a fucking oddball...if this is the fucking answer then it's a disgrace that RDM wasn't given until the end of the season... fucking hell what a nightmare...

CHELSEA IN CRISIS!

I find it fascinating that RA is so determined to get his 50m white elephant scoring goals that he sacks the guy who got him the prize he most valued, presumably just to bring in the guy who managed to get a decent season out of Torres. The club really is a plaything to him

Now that the hullabaloo has ebbed slightly, I don't think that Chelsea are out of the CL yet.

Yes, it is out of their hands, but I really don't think it is beyond the realms of possibility that Juve will travel to Shakhtar and lose. I know that a cosy draw would suit both teams. And it is true that there are good teams through in both first and second positions, but I think there is a slight advantage to topping the group. I don't think that Shakhtar can afford not to try to score, in case Juve pop up with a late goal, and it doesn't really seem in their psyche to shut up shop.

Clearly such a result would justify Abramovich's decision to replace RDM (at least in RM's own head). But I just don't think this one is over yet.
