If you ever have a spare 4 hours or so then Once Upon A Time... is definitely worth a look with it's lavish costume, period settings, outstanding performances and stunning Morricone score. It's not until afterwards when you start to think back that you realise the possibility that everything that happened after the 1930's could have been dreamt by noodles (De Niro) in the opium den. However, we can forgive Leone for being so deceptive because there are many other questions that arise that are left unanswered. It's a wonderful slice of 1930's New York Jewish history in an essence, almost psycological thriller at its finale but feels most at home playing a superior gangster movie at best with a cameo from reliable Joe Pesci. What's also interesting is Noodles' relationship with Deborah beginning with teenage mischief and culminating in what appears to be a drawn- out rape scene. Years later when they meet again the scene in the theatre climaxes with Noodles seeing Max's son (played by the same actor who played the young Max) appearing into focus like a strange portal into the past. In one, it's simply beautiful, with densely layered narrative and story and iconic scenes and landscapes with a hypnotic soundtrack that can leave you mesmerized.
