Positives
  • Its all about the performances:

-Melanie Griffith. Doubt shes been on this kind of form in a long time.
-Sigournay Weaver. The ultimate bitch boss.
-Harrison Ford. Given a chance to be comic and doing it extremely well.
  • Good supporting roles from Alec Balwin, Joan Cusack, Oliver Platt and even Kevin Spacey pops up.
  • Has a nice happy ending.

Negatives

  • Its so 80's its scary. The clothes (shoulder pads!), the makeup (neon blue eye shadow), the hair (oh god the hair!)
  • Its not laugh out loud funny. Its too busy trying to get its message across. Harrison Ford has some good moments but thats it really.
  • Even though she is meant to look a bit cheap in the beginning, the camerawork for entire film is not always very flattering to Griffith. There are several shots that make her look puffy and old and then other times shes beautiful.
  • The music. Or rather Carly Simons song that dominates the story. Its a great song but not in a million years does it belong in this light, frothy, romantic film.
  • A niggling thing but Melanie Griffith is given third billing?!! I know that Weaver and Ford were bigger stars but come on!! Its her friggin movie!

3/5 good, solid if a little dated.

    Cars

Positives
1. Great CGI animation, cool scenery and cool "Car" world
2. Mater the Tow Truck was hilarious and worth watching again, better yet, he should get his own movie
3. Some original chuckle moments
4. The geniuses at Pixar

Negatives
1. Its quite predictable by the 30 minute mark.
2. While the town gets a revival, the fact does exsist that small town USA are slowly becoming extinct, thanks in part to Interstates and Wal-Mart.
3. The cool Ferrari gets very little screen time.

* While im no fan of anime or animation, I was intrigued by this because of the cars and its concept. Not as fun as the superior Toy Story, so wait for it to come on TV or offer to babysit and watch it for free.

3/5..........

Positives

  • It handles its subject matter fantastically. It is subtle but never shies away from the cold hard reality of what was happening to the boys.
  • Joseph Gordon Levitt is mesmerising as Neil. Not a likeable character by any stretch imagination but fascinating to watch.
  • The little boy playing the younger Neil is wonderful aswell.
  • Bill Sage is excellent as the very controversial character of Coach. Hes portrayed as an attractive, charming man who seduces rather than molests Neil. Definitely not a stereotypical cinematic pervert.
  • Even though Ive only seen Doom Generation, I can still see the much talked about progression of Arakis direction. He excells himself here.

Negatives

  • It is bleak with a capital B.
  • The subject matter may be too much for some viewers. Plus the way Coach is shown and the fact that Neil feels "chosen" to be "coaches favourite" may be seen as an unsettling interpretation of this subject.
  • There is also a pretty brutal rape scene.
  • Some of the supporting actors are pretty awful. Elizabeth Shue is boring as usual. And Michelle Tractenburg sucks even more.
  • I found the other boys story (though necessary) a little less interesting. Neil is more charismatic and it kinda makes you want to follow his story more.
  • One problem with Levitts performance is that his accent is so thick that he is occasionally unintelligible. Which is a little jarring as he is co narrator.

A hard film to judge. Its certainly not enjoyable viewing but its exceptionally made and wonderfully fearless.

So 4/5 it gets.

Slither

Positives
1. Cool gore. Most effects where pretty awesome during the more violently explicit deaths.
2. The timely comic relief breaks up the tension just right.
3. We get a somewhat cool insight about where the creature comes from and what it will do now that it is on Earth.
4. The fact that the zombies all shared one "brain" was brilliant, it added to the despair of the female protagonist.
5. Great DVD Features.

Negatives
1. I really didnt care for the characters....like I did in Shaun of the Dead.
2. Not tremendously original at all....but thats supposed to be the point according to the director.
3. A bit overhyped, I expected more, I dont know why.
4. I felt like i had seen this movie before......Arachnophobia, Dawn of the Dead, Cabin Fever, The Blob, The Thing.....Etc......

* While entertaining for the first viewing, I found myself waiting for the End. And saying to myself, Shaun of the Dead is so much better than this.

My final verdict...a slimey.......3/5...

Positives:

- Daniel Craig is amazing as Bond, holds the film together
- The action is terrific, very gritty and brutal, and well-paced
- The drama and emotion is played out very well and plays off against the rest of the movie terrifically
- Judi Dench is terrific as M
- Terrific Theme Tune

Negatives

- The villain is a bit one-dimensional bar the cool tears of blood
- It is a bit long, though it does fly by

5/5: Bond is truly back!

Positives

  • Very well made for an indie film.
  • Good soundtrack.
  • Its very sweet and easy to watch.

Negatives

  • Its origins as a stage play are pretty obvious.
  • Jessica herself is very annoying.
  • Its a little pretentious and lacks depth.

3/5 if you like Woody Allen then this a pretty good place to go. Quirky and a nice commentary on relationships.

Positives:

- Awesome tunes, some great witty lyrics and cool guitar
- Both Jables and KG are awesome, funny and cool
- The cameos are pretty hilarious
- Very, very crude but very, very funny
- Just a great film overall

Negatives-

- Maybe some more D history wouldn't go amiss
- A bit funny at parts with some Satanic stuff, but not that bad...

A great, funny epic rock movie:

The Squid and The Whale

Positives
1. Graphic, yet, very intelligent adult script and No holds barred dialogue.
2. Great performances from all, especially the two sons. The oldest was so good that I wanted to punch him in the face half the time.
3. Taking a mundane topic and making it somewhat interesting.
4. Well placed comedic moments, like how even the poor cat gets caught up in the middle of everything.
5. Decent directing, really puts you inside the family's home and realistic insight on how divorce affects children and their relationship with one another and their parents.

Negatives
1. A bit manupilative and symbolism gets annoying.
2. The young son's indulgence in the masturbatory arts was a bit much, I got it the first time, why focus on that so much? Who does that?, and graffitis the school with it? A bit unneccesary and not needed to tell the story.
3. Turning the mother into the neighborhood whore and a self-absorbed, selfish mother was kind of unfair. She lets her youngest son drink hard liquor! C'mon give me a break!
4. Ending was kind of weak.
5. Not something you can watch with the family at Thanksgiving.

* It begins amusing and then just turns repetitive. The young son "finger painting" is supposed to shock and be symbolic (big surprise there, huh) but its more repulsive than anything.

My final verdict  ......3/5.......
Would have scored higher if not for the forced symbolism.

Little Man

Positives
1. It is equally terrible as White Chicks, which may discourage people to rent this.
2. The Wayan Brothers don't give a shit how horrible their films are.
3. You may laugh a maximum of maybe 6 times....through no fault of your own.
4. The Special Features which reveal all the hard work the CGI team put into this.
5. Cameos are sprinkled throughout the film with the likes of Rob Schneider, and a bunch of SNL Live alumns, along with Chaz Palmantieri.
6. The majority of the CGI is truly fantastic, considering that the CGI effect is the main character.
7. This is rock bottom, ocean floor bottom, this is the urinal, the turd flushing down your toilet....so with that being said, the Wayans can only go up from here. ( Yeah, and Iraq is a stable country)

Negatives
1. Not a "fly-girl" in sight.
2. Sometimes the CGI head of Marlon looks creepy when it does not blend seamlessly.
3. The story and script are truly brutal. In the end, Little Man appears to stay with the family, and I was shocked that the "fiancee" couldnt tell when a full size grown man is having sex with her from a man with the body of a toddler.
4. This film may actually lower your I.Q. and if someone walks in the room and catches you watching it, they may punch you in the face....I would.
5. The whole plot is proposterous. The actual heist of the diamond is the stupidest thing ive seen, since George W. Bush was re-elected.

* Well as you can see, the film is just plain stupid, no, stupid would be a compliment.
My final verdict............2/5....
sadly, youll have more fun punching a small dog.

Ginger Snaps

Posatives +
- The two main girls portray the outsiders very well
- I like the way the werewolf transformation takes a few days instead of just happening in a few seconds
- The Camera work was pretty good
- I liked the fact that they didnt realy use usual meathods (like silver bullets etc...)
- I thought the way the story played out was very good
- the very end was quite sweet, which I liked

Negatives -
- Lets face it, the final werewolf looked shit
- I didnt like the whole werewolfism = puberty thing
- If was very grim and sickening at times

3/5

Positives:

I hadn't seen it in a few years so all my childhood memories came flooding back of this amazing film!

*The beautiful animation.  The colours are simply wonderful and the settings and characters are stunning.
*The songs - They're all so catchy!  And yes - I sing along with them all!

"Hakuna Matata - what a wonderful phrase, hakuna matata ain't no passing craze, it means no worries for the rest of your days, it's out problem-free philosophy, hakuna matata"

(Yes - i just typed that from memory!  )

*The story line - it's so good!  I defy anyone not to be moved by the entire story - especially when little Simba runs away
*The voices!  James Earl Jones as Mufasa!  That's pure genius!  and whoopi Goldberg as a hyenna - does it get much better than that!!?

Negatives

There are none!!

My favourite Disney film - absolutely fantastic!  5/5

Cowboy Bebop The Movie

Posatives +
- Great animation
- seriously cool action
- loved all the futuristic ships and stuff
- had a great plot
- all the main chracters were very likeable
Negatives -
- a bit slow at times
- the chracters sometimes seem to have mood swings (but thats me just being picky)

overall - a great movie, I definitly have to check out the series at some point ****

Casino Royale (2006)

Positives:
- - The true beginning of Bond
- - A stalwart adaptation of Ian Fleming's original creation
- - Martin Campbell as director
- - Judi Dench back as M
- - The gradual character development of M
- - Intense and some raw action sequences
- - Aston Martin (Ouch)
- - Daniel Craig

Negatives:
- - Unknown and disappointing theme tune
- - I wanted more

Despite the horrid press and the now somewhat silent protestors of Craig being chosen as Bond (they're evidently eating their words now), Casino Royale presents the essence of what Fleming strove to create. He is not cheesily suave, he makes mistakes, we see how he attains his 00 status and how determined he is. Bond's pursuit of everything he does is bulletproof. He is tortured and upbraided and yet he continues. Craig really does demonstrate more facets of Bond's character than any of the others who have played Bond and that's saying something.

5/5 Sublime.

Positives
Johnny Depp - he can convey so much emotion in just a look.
Al Pacino - Incredible to watch, when he's on the screen you can't take your eyes off him.
Madsen is equally brilliant, as per.
Sod it, the whole bloody cast is fantastic, great acting all round.
The story is immensely absorbing, and you find yourself getting really into it.
The violence is dealt with well, it never feels gratuitous.
It stays with you long after you've watched it.

Negatives
It's not the kind of film you sit down and watch with the family.

Overall, I feel that Donnie Brasco is an incredibly moving and powerful film, with fantastic acting from both Pacino and Depp.

5/5

Positives
  • The overall look of the film is extremely well done. Its wonderfully realistic and grimey. Lots of muted drab tones.
  • The story is brilliantly perverse and well paced.
  • Jodie Foster. Just amazing as Clarice. Proving that a heroine doesnt need to be glammed up in order to hold an audiences attention.
  • Antony Hopkins. Hes only in 20 mins of the film but they are priceless. Even when he is not on screen you still feel like hes right there with Clarice.
  • Ted Levine. I think hes often over shadowed by Antony Hopkins in this. In many ways Jame Gumb is a less showy part but its the braver one and Levine is excellent in it.
  • The final confrontation in the basement. Genius and scary.

Negatives

  • Apart from it spawning a couple of uninteresting follow up films, I cant find any fault with Silence of the Lambs. Its about as close to a perfect film as you are likely to get.

5/5

V  for Vendetta

Positives
1. Great story-telling. Truly solid plot and interesting depiction of futuristic events.
2. Cool characters, both the protagonists and the antagonists.
3. Natalie Portman is a very underrated actress and she delivers in this.
4. V. is the man.
5. I couldnt help but to think of several Global Events that could lead to the scenerios in this film. Quite scary and not as far fetched as one would think.
6. Highly entertaining, decent mix of politics, violence and even love?
7. Superb story depth that keeps you hooked since most of the scenerios seem to be offsprings of todays problems and situations.
8. Solid message.....Us the people should dictate what the government does.
9. Love the fact that the movie protrays present day America like it should.....Heading into the toilet bowl with George W. Bush strapped in with a fecal seatbelt.

Negatives
1. Will turn off those with absolutley no political interest or desire to understand or care about governments.
2. Truly frightening to think that governments could be behind lots of crimes against their own people....it happens in Third World countries all the time!
3. Stupid people will say this film is Anti-American or un-Patriotic....I say they are just blind.
4. What happened to the hispanics?

* Thought provoking and stylish.....I recommend you watch this film !!
4/5.........

Positives:

- Amazing performances from almost everyone, (Scarlett is a bit ok, but she does a decent job)...
- David Bowie, David Bowie, David Bowie...
- A great plotline that never falters and grips you and twists and turns, etc....
- Some great illusions and tricks to keep you guessing...
- Whilst the pace is never fast or quick, it keeps you gripped for the entire running time...

Negatives-

- Urm, David Bowie's moustache is a bit wonky..... dunno really

5/5- A flawless masterpiece

True Romance (Director's Cut)

Positives
1. Now this is what I call a Love Story!!
2. Tremendous characters and performances, locations....just great directing.
3. Truly great script....Thanks, Quentin.
4. Amazing cast.....Walken, Hopper, Oldman, Gandolfini, Pitt....and more. Pretty cool to see these actors early in their careers in these roles.
5. Cool action and the graphic violence is slick.....dialogue is colorful and entertaining.
6. The Quentin commentary is priceless, his revelation that he was "Clarence" is humbling.  Special Features on both discs are absolutely a must watch if you love this film.
7. The Walken and Hopper scene where they discuss Clarence's whereabouts (amongst other things) is just plain flawless.
8. I can watch this film again and again and again.

Negatives
1. Hopper's death is never revisited or mentioned in the voiceover in the last scene, which I found kind of peculiar.
2. Pitt's character should have had a bigger role, he was great, plus he was ultimately responsible for all the deaths in the final stand-off.
3. Gary Oldman as Drexl, should have had a bigger part or more dialogue....he was great too.

* Great date movie....and if she hates it, dump her! and find yourself an Alabama, I found mine, 4 years ago.
........4/5........

Hostel

Positives
1. Frightening concept about dangers of being a tourist in a strange land.
2. Fantastic looking women throughout the film.
3. Terrific sets, especially the shot of the empty factory just before Paxton is introduced to the truth.
4. Almost anyone who has traveled can relate to the probability of something like this happening to them....ive partied with many strangers.
5. The twisted hunting club was a perfect entity to the story and Cool costumes worn by the butchering bastards.
6. Intense during the first viewing, mainly cause it starts off full of fun and then turns dark and evil.
7. At Elite Hunting....You'd get $25,000 for me....hahhaha.
8. Eli Roth is keeping this genre alive and well......Woooooooo!!

Negatives
1. I had a tough time finding the gore to be realistic. Perhaps im just desensitized from all the gorenography Ive watched over the years.
2. I found the optical nerve severing scene, somewhat over the top and stupid. Was that Cheez Whiz dripping out of the eye?
3. While somewhat satisfying, it was too convinient how our hero finds those responsible and executes his revenge.
4. Alex, Svetlana and Natalya should have suffered a lot more than they did.
5. The gore looked fake at times....again, probably not the filmmakers fault that I've seen real carnage.
6. Will probably inspire an inferior sequel.

*This film might have been more traumatic for me if I were 14 years old. I did enjoy the fact that the torturing happens inside while outside--- the birds are singing and the sun is out and flowers are blooming. Man, thats creepy! I have to give a slight edge to Wolf Creek over Hostel....hey, you heard it here first.

My final verdict  .......4/5....... because this film will traumatize someone, like Halloween, Friday the 13th, and Return of the Living Dead, traumatized me at that age.  Thats a motherfu(king good thing!

Positives

  • A knockout cast. With some great zombie cameos.
  • Naturally its hilarious but what struck me was how dramatic it was too. I was watching it with the expectation of it being a Dawn of the Dead spoof. What I wasnt expecting was to cry twice.
  • Great special effects. Lots of "fun" gore.
  • Its has a wonderful look, thanks to Spaced director Edgar Wrights innovative style of camerawork and editing.
  • As someone who hadnt seen Spaced before this, the film is to be commended for not alienating its new viewers. It would have been easy to throw in lots of Spaced references but they didnt. There are some of course but they arent glaring or offputting.
  • Concerning the dvd, this is a masterclass in how you do special features. Not one but four commentaries. I was in heaven.

Negatives

  • Uh...ummmm....oh theres...no wait...oh there was....Yeah I got nothing.

5/5

Positives
1. Very cool cinematography. I was truly impressed with the way this film becomes a visual treat. The colors or lack thereof, the textures all of it make the violence look even cooler.
2. Great stories between the characters. Great acting from an amazing cast, everyone is great.
3. The treat and surprise to see Carla Gugino topless, Ive always liked her.
4. Jessica Alba is a visual treat, no matter what color she is shot in.
5. This film had my attention from the first 2 minutes to the very last.
6. The violence is shot so cool, the severing of limbs never looked better. While still graphic it is totally tolerable for those who hate gore.
7. Great feeling that you are watching a graphic novel , with the characters talking to themselves and unreal action sequences.
8. Elijah Wood was a madman!

Negatives
1. If you step away for a minute, you'll probably miss something cool.
2. This is a Guy-Flick in every sense of the word, even the female cast is tantalizing but dangerous and as tough as the men....what im trying to say is that your female companion will probably dislike it.
3. The assholes who will bash this film for being too voilent and masochistic...here is an excerpt from a negative review I read somewhere else:

"I spent a good part of the film staring at the floor to avoid the gruesome and inhumane depictions of the human race at it's most horrific state. This world does not need to see that kind of violence.
At one point, when yet ANOTHER person had a bullet blasted through their skull, the guy behind me said, "That's f***ing awesome!"
Well, how "f***ing awesome" would it be if that man with a bullet lodged in his brain were his father - or, bringing it to real life - one of the soldiers that we've lost in Iraq thus far.
I just don't understand how such gruesome and glorified violence is entertaining. It's one thing to have a wrench thrown at you to train for dodgeball and have that be funny, but watching a man graphically whip a woman he is about to rape and be told that THAT should be funny to me? I'm sorry - I think things like that are very real, happen every day, and I'm thinking they aren't so funny to the woman who has been violated.".......
*Give me a  break already, its a movie....from the mind of the twisted yet genius Robert Rodriguez and Special Guest Director- Quentin Tarantino and Frank Millers imagination....Everyone knows- Violence is their Signature.
What in the living fuck was this person expecting out of a movie called Sin City??!! Perhaps you went to the wrong film you stupid asshole! The film wasnt called Vatican City!!

My Final Verdict .......5/5.....
Im no fan of black and white films and while this isnt shot entirely in black and white, it comes close. But it had my attention. Im scoring this film so high because honestly , ive never seen anything like it, it was like watching a comic book come to life. Violence happens all around us, and its all too real. Its nice to watch actors get killed and then listen to commentaries about them making the film.....to remind us that, Its only a movie. Call me an immature male for liking this film, thats cool, but im also that immature guy that holds the door open for you, helps your elderly parents cross the street, assists people in wheelchairs and helps the less fortunate.
Some of us are just closer to violent images because maybe we all dont come from loving homes.
