Body Heat (1981)

Positives:

- It's Film Noir. This is modern noir known as Neo-Noir.
- This is so Noir. The dialogue, characters, story, and setting. I love that.
- William Hurt's in it. One of the best living american actors to date. He doesn't fulter here, as usual he's brilliant here.
- Lawrance Kasdan's script and dialogue is top notch here, as well as his direction. Everything fits nicely together here.
- Kathleen Turner is perfect for her role. She's the typical femme fatal you find in a Film Noir picture. Great performance.
- Grand musical score that sets the heat of the picture.
- The cinematography and editing flow perfectly, with long fluid takes.
- That memorable line by Turner: "You're not too smart, are you? I like that in a man."
- The ending is so brilliant. Very surprising.

Negatives:

- This is more raunchy than the average Film Noir. Not one to watch with the kids.
- Youngsters viewers might find the dialogue confusing. If you love Noir, you'll love the dialogue.
- Alot of shagging. Marked as an "Erotic Thriller", when people read that, they might avoid it. The shagging aint explecit.
- The ending keeps you itching for more.

Film Noir fans will not be dissapointed with this Noir gem. It features all the elements on why we love the genre: Lucious story, juicy dialogue, atmospheric setting, simple yet engaging cinematography, the "dame" that keeps the protaganist going, classic "jazzy" film score, and of course, the twist and turns we never thought of seeing. Lawrance Kasdan really hit this one for six. He writes masterfully as well as directing, but most definatley his writing towers above everything else. His writting gives the characters so much life and vibe, a perfect script storywise and dialogue related, it's a film fanatic's dream come true. Of course there's the leading cast, with riveting performances by Turner and Hurt. William Hurt is the stand out here, he proves here why he's one of the finest living actors of the past century, a true performer, he does not pull a bad move once here, simply perfect acting all round from everyone. So, if you're looking for a film that will grab your attention, this is it. A completely unpredictable story with fantastic twist and turns, this will quench your thirst for good ol' Noir.

Final Score: ****

Positives:
Looks awesome.I mean really fucking good.
Great performances from the two leads.
Excellent swordfights. These aren't like Errol Flynn waving the damn thing about his head-witness the scene where the two are literally falling over from exhaustion after swinging cavalry sabers around for an hour...
Great music by Howard Blake.
Ace cameos from Robert Stephens and Albert Finney.
Doesn't outstay its welcome.
A truly magnificent debut feature. On a very low budget. Most Epics only dream of looking like this...

Negatives:
Apparently,Keitel actually believed he was playing the good guy...
Er...that's it.

Verdict: Ace.Go watch it now. 5/5.

Eternal Sunshine

Positives

-You won't find another movie as unique as this. Ever.
-It's confusing in a fun mind bendy kinda way.
-It's incredibly, hopelessly romantic with being soppy.
-By far and wide Jim Carrey's best performance. He plays Joel to perfection. With just the right amount of self conscious nerdiness without being creepy.
-Kate Winslet just having the time of her life as Clementine is worth seeing.
-The mind erasing thing, comes across as completely feasible and realistic when actually its a very unnerving concept.
-The memory scenes are done so imaginatively, particularly when Joel is a little boy.

Negatives

-I can see some viewers not having the patience to see this movie through. Its jumps back and forth erratically. It's not in chronological order. It takes a bit of thinking to figure out where exactly the characters are in their lives. In short it may just be too weird for some people.

But still I strongly advise anyone to watch it. It's fucking brilliant and I love it.

4.5/5

Im in a batman mood

Batman & Mr Freeze: Sub Zero

Positives +
- the Story (mr freeze always was a good guy a heart)
- mr freeze has polar bears..... awseome
- the ending, very touching
- Robin gets to take center stage a few times

Negatives -
- Extremly crappy CGI
- not enough Batgirl (or Batman for a fact)
- far too short (aren't they all though)
- not enough cool action scenes

overall: not as good as Return of the Joker or Mask of the Phantasm, but still a pretty decent flick ***

Schindler's List (1993)

Positives:

- Features a colour Prologue and Epilogue, as well as a little girl's coat that is shown in red, amongst the black and white picture. Beautiful.
- Gorgeous black & white picture, with stunning cinematography along with the editing.
- This is deffinatley Steven Spielberg's best film.
- Very emotional, Spielberg made this one with powerful emotions.
- Makes you feel worse for the people that experienced the holocaust.
- Liam Neeson's best role by a longshot. His performance as Oskar Schindler is one of the finest screen performances of all time.
- Ralph Fiennes plays a murderous bastard so convincingly, you could swear he's that evil in real life.
- Ben Kingsley is once again masterful. He's simply perfect.
- Everyone in this film is brilliant. Spielberg's determination fuels every single person in this film. Everything is perfect in this. There's not one thing poor in this. One of the most passionatly made works of art ever.
- The ending where Schindler (Neeson) talks about how he could've save more people, is so emotial, it almost guarentees to bring a tear to your eye. You feel great sadness for everyone in that moment.

Negatives:

- Very sad, hard to watch twice. That doesn't mean you shouldn't own it though.
- Very disturbing images will turn off sensitive viewers. Not for the young.

Schindler's List is one of the most perfectly made films of all time, it deserves all the praise and awards that it received from critics and audiences alike. One of the most amazing things about this achievement, is that Spielberg refused to be payed for directing the film, saying that it would be like accepting blood money. That piece of honesty and determination to make a very emotianal film, forced the perfection out of Spielberg as well his cast and crew to create one of the best war films ever. It is a cinematic landmark, and let's not forget the historical significance too, that shows us how strange and cruel humanity can be, and it reminds us of the kindness, love and charity everyone of us have inside of us. A magnificent telling of Oskar Schindler's heroism and love he showed for the Jewish people, and of course, the world.

Final Score: *****

tadanobu asano
a man who is permanently hypnotised into a bird
its weird and bizarre without trying too hard

NEGATIVES -

vinnie jones...as a hitman...but mostly as vinnie jones
it has annoying 'funny' segments with a marketing lady
it has long scenes with no speech...not good to watch drunk!

A really obscure one this time.

Chance

Positives

  • James Marsters. To my shame, he is the soul reason why I bought it in the first place. This guy could sit and be silent for two hours and, if they filmed it,  I would most likely watch it.
  • Kudos to Amber Benson. She wrote, directed, produced and acted in it.
  • Chances mother was quite funny.
  • For Buffy fans, its Spike and Tara getting it on! The vamp and the lesbian witch!

Negatives

Oh god where to start!
  • It gives Indie films a bad name. Poor script. Bad acting. No real plot. Clumsy direction.
  • There were musical interludes. Which were strange and went on for ages. Wanted to break that fecking guitar over that guys head.
  • The whole thing with Nic Brendons wife Tressa Di Figlia was a odd and anti climatic. And she put on a british accent. At least I think that was what it was. Emma Caulfied was meant to play that part and I think she wouldve been better.
  • Didnt make enough use of Andy Hallet. Who Chance was meant to be in love with  but who was only in like two scenes.
  • James in a dress. He had on full makeup and high heels. No no no no. It looked so wrong and I dont think he liked it either.

I bought this at the height of my Marsters Mania and shelled out £30. Not worth it.

Rating-2/5

Match Point

Positives
-Woody Allen goes dark
- A fantastic script. Allen, for the most part, dispenses completely with his witty one-liners and creates a great story.
-Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Not a great fan at all of him but in this he was fantastic.
-. Penelope Wilton. A small role but she plays the part fantasically well.
- A completely unexpected yet highly believable plot shift.

Negatives.
- Scarlett Johansson. I never have understood the love for this woman, eitther as an actress or an figure of incredible beauty. with the exception of a few scsnes, she seem to sugger from Brandoitis. She, more often than not seems to be trying to hard, making her unconvincing. It was implausible that Meyers would risk his wellbeing and marriage (to the far more lovely and believable Emily Mortimer, another positive of the film) for Johansson.

Not the retrun to form people would have you believe, simply because he has never really been off form, Allen delivers a wonderful film. He brings London to life just as he does New York and almost every player is on the ball.

4/5

Positives
1. Christopher Walken and Kate Beckinsale are terrific as usual. Kate is such a sexy woman she is memorable even in a small role and that tight rockin' body. Walken gives the Morty character moxie and wackiness.
2. Really touching story....it had me in a bit of soul searching, especially the scene in where Sandler rejects his eldelry father (Winkler) its a tearjerking scene...and i dont even have a father!
3. Cool retelling of an age old story about missing out on the important things in life.
4. A toned-down Sandler is at his best and does his best Pacino at the end. But sprinkled throughout are scenes that will make you laugh.
5. Starts as a comedy and turns into something more meaningful right before our eyes.

Negatives
1. Can get slow if you arent in the mood for sentimentality.
2. A bit predictable.
3. Didnt expect to fight tears watching this.

*My final verdict.......4/5..... it made me laugh, almost made me cry, made me reflect and Jennifer Coolidge in a mohawk in the "first kiss scene" was hilarious.

Positives:

~ A simply phenomenal performance from Cate Blanchett. She manages to display every emotion on her face in the most subtle way - in my opinion this is her best performance in a film.
~ Great supporting cast, particularly from Geoffrey Rush as her sinister assassin/advisor.
~ Gorgeous costumes and visuals. You can't help but be swept up in the period of the film.
~ A fantastic score - at times very haunting, accompanies powerful moments such as the assassination of all the traitors and her transformation into the Virgin Queen perfectly.
~ Brilliantly depicts in a very lively way the rise of a young and care-free girl into the extraordinary woman and queen that she would become.

Negatives:

~ Eric Cantona's appearance is a totally unnecassary bit of casting.
~ Historical dramas aren't everyone's cup of tea. This isn't really a negative in my book!

In conclusion, I simply adore this film, it's in my top 5 films of all time!! I've never fully been able to work out why I love it so much, but I would urge anyone who would normally avoid anything historical to see this. Do it, do it NOW!
.....5/5

Friends with Money  (2006)

Positives
1. Some of the characters can be occasionally amusing especially the Frances McDormond and Joan Cusack characters.
2. Adult script.
3. Jennifer Aniston in french maid outfit, not as Hot as Kate Beckinsale in her pocahantas look in "Click" though.
4. Decent message about the dangers of being selfish and self-centered etc....
5. Best line in the film was when the rich friends asked themselves if they would be friends with Olivia if they didnt know her for so long.

Negatives
1. This movie was more about these people's conspicuous consumption. These people drove gas guzzling monstrosities of SUVs lived in huge million+ dollar homes and use tiny $70 bottles of mosturizer on their feet even when they are broke!
2. Found it hard to relate to the under developed characters. I thought I would relate most with Jennifer Aniston's character but she was selfish and self destructive not to mention incredibly boring.
3. Husbands are one dimensional and was Aaron gay or was that just a way to attract gay viewers to this film?
4. Was Olivia using other people's vibrators ? and if she was, dude, what a gross bitch.
5. This film leaves a lot to be desired and many unexplored and unanswered questions.
6. I felt like i was watching a drawn out TV movie of the week.

* .......2/5......... I expected more from this type of film, especially since my girlfriend had heard so much about how good it was at work.
But, there is so much that we don't get to find out about in this movie:

How did these people become friends?
Is Aaron gay?
Is Franny vacant?
Will she leave these people behind?
Is her kid gay?
What will happen to that house?
What will Olivia do with her life if she's not a maid?
What about Olivia's stalking of her ex-one night stand?
Does Olivia have a drug problem?
Is this rich chubby guy right for her?..........
These are just some of the questions I pondered, 10 minutes later i concluded with "Who cares?" and you probably will too.

Positives

-Of course it was no great shock that The League present us with a very, VERY, complex  and original concept.
-This could never be deemed as another TV spin off movie. Itís too dense and complicated to ever be deemed as a quick money making venture.
-The opening scene is great.
-Heir Lippís plight is deeply touching, playing the one character that not only wants to survive but to be given the choice to change as well.

Negatives

-Unfortunately this initial promise is not carried out very well throughout the film. It rears off into a number of different directions, not all of which work.
-The Regency section falls flat. Had these characters been given their own movie I think things would be different. But alas in this film it doesnít work.
-All the cameos are pointless and add nothing overall.
-Not enough scenes with the League playing themselves. There could have been some great scenes from this but Steve is the only one who gets a lot of screen time and even his scenes are a bit weak.
-Also, though its pains me to say it, the movie actually isnít very funny. Its very good at the emotional aspect but it lacks the creepy comedy we would expect from the League.

3/5 for effort. Could have been a lot better.

Positives
The narration is utter genius
The humour is actually funny, especially in the aforementioned narration
All the actors look like they're having a great time, and most of them play their characters really well.
The soundtrack is very cool.

Negatives
The story is needlessly hard to follow.
It ends a bit abruptly.

However, it is an absolutely cracking film by Shane Black and I would happily recommend it to anyone looking for a decent comedy/thriller to watch. 4.5/5

Positives
1. Fun and non-stop action and some really good startle moments.
2. Absolutely fantastic and dynamic character interaction, even the zombies are cool.
3. Cool zombie film with a fantastic blend of comedy and  foreboding sense of dread.
4. Wonderful dialogue and fantastic direction and locations. Every scene is full of details and the irony of the Winchester had me in stitches.
5. Excellent use of gore to remind the viewer that it is a zombie movie afterall.
6. Pretty damn funny, especially Ed and his "Whats up , niggas" line.

Negatives
1. If  I didnt have subtitles on, I would have missed some real funny dialogue and English swear words.

5/5.......pure entertainment.

* With only one personal "negative", which probably only applies to people living outside Europe. It is a fantastic film....got better with my second viewing and plan on watching it several more times. Excellent ending.........or is it ?

Positives

  • First and foremost its hilarious.
  • Completely original and has new material, meaning nothing is re-used from the series, which counts for a lot for tv adapted movies.
  • Theres a strong plot and sticks with it the whole way through. It doesnt try to piece together funny scenes to add up to a decent running time.
  • The movie is clever in how it manages to use every single South Park character but it never feels like they are being shoe horned into the plot. Everyone has a justified part to play.
  • The songs are just genuis. Its easy to say that Stone and Parker humour only appeals to lowest common denominator but the songs are intricate, wonderful parodies, and completely work within the story. Particulary, What would Brian Boitano Do? and Its Easy.

Negatives

  • Its not for people who dont like swearing, which is basically the plot of the story funny enough. If you didnt like South Park with the beeps then youll hate this with a passion.
  • Though I liked them in it, the Satan and Saddam parts arent the strongest part of the story.

4/5-a cracking film that never stops being funny

Positives

-Of course it was no great shock that The League present us with a very, VERY, complex  and original concept.
-This could never be deemed as another TV spin off movie. It's too dense and complicated to ever be deemed as a quick money making venture.
-The opening scene is great.
-Heir Lipp's plight is deeply touching, playing the one character that not only wants to survive but to be given the choice to change as well.

Negatives

-Unfortunately this initial promise is not carried out very well throughout the film. It rears off into a number of different directions, not all of which work.
-The Regency section falls flat. Had these characters been given their own movie I think things would be different. But alas in this film it doesn't work.
-All the cameos are pointless and add nothing overall.
-Not enough scenes with the League playing themselves. There could have been some great scenes from this but Steve is the only one who gets a lot of screen time and even his scenes are a bit weak.
-Also, though its pains me to say it, the movie actually isn't very funny. Its very good at the emotional aspect but it lacks the creepy comedy we would expect from the League.

Sadly I have to agree.  It hurts me that I didn't enjoy the film as much as I thought I would.

I wholly agree. My only negative is the singing gets abit annoying....but it is truly hilarious!!! Blame canada!!! Terrance and Philip are the best and Saddam is too damn funny. 5/5....for me.

Positives

  • If you like your teen movies to have an edge then this is for you. In the same vein as Heathers and Election, only waaaay darker.
  • Evan Rachel Wood is perfect as soulless Kimberley. Not a typical busty, blonde but an ordinary looking girl who just oozes sex appeal.

Negatives

  • This isnt a movie to watch if you want mindless entertainment. Nobody is actually likeable and the story isnt pleasant.
  • The climax is, to be blunt, stupid and detracts a little from Kimberleys character.
  • Its funny but not as funny as it thinks it is.
  • The supporting cast arent really given that much of a chance to shine. Selma Blair is criminally underused. As is Ron Livingston.
  • James Woods role I think goes a little further than it should. He overacts terribly. His character could have been a little sublter and it would have had more impact.

3/5-watchable but not something you would randomly put in the dvd player. You would need to be in the mood for it.

Final Destination 3

Posatives +
- just when you think they've done all the deaths they can do, they pull some more out of the bag
- the ending = fucking ace
- they killed off the annoying ones first
- while not as good as the first two beginnings, the rollar coaster scene was awseome
- the photo thing was pretty cool
Negatives -
- the acting was a bit shit (suprise suprise)
- the lead lady got on my nerves from time to time
- thought the sun bed deaths were sort of crap

overall - the first will always be the best but I enjoyed this more than I thought I would ***1/2
