GOODFELLAS

Positives:

- An excellent cast, especially Pesci and De Niro...
- A great soundtrack, though Gimme Shelter now seems a standard Scorcese track after The Departed...
- Thrill-a-minute goings on, from killings to money stuff....
- Keeps you hooked for the duration mainly...

Negatives:

- The ending with him ratting everyone out seemed a bit last minute, it could have been padded out...

Being John Malkovich (1999)

Positives:

- John Cusack is brilliant as the strugling puppeteer who's hopeflessly in love.
- John Malkovich as himself.
- A brilliant idea using John Malkovich to play as himself in a film with fantasy elements.
- When Malkovich plays Cusack's character.
- Great screenplay from the mind of Charlie Kaufman.
- Spinke Jonze's debut feature film.
- The cameos by actors playing themselves: Sean Penn, Charlie Sheen, Brad Pitt.
- Beautiful music.
- The history behind the 7 1/2 floor.
- The handheld camera feel.
- When Malkovich goes into his own sub-consience.
- Sad finale ending that keeps you hanging.

Negatives:

- May be confusing for some.
- Not for kids.
- People will be expecting a comedy, this is definately a drama. It wont dissapoint though.

This is quite possibly one of the finest debut films of all time. With a balanced script of genius, Jonze pulls this one off with a bang. He gets the finest performances out of his cast here, and has inspiring techniques to get the aspiring filmmaker excited. Kaufman's script is simply genius. With a strange and unique story line, he writes one of the saddest films of the 90's, and gets the desserved recognition for it. As for the cast, Cusack and Malkovich give their best performances here, as well as Keener, and surprisingly Cameron Diaz. Malkovich's performance is mezmirising, a role that is almost impossible to pull of, he pulls off by a long shot, by playing two characters, himself and Cusack's character, he rewards us with one of the finest on-screen performances of modern cinema, and possibly even cinema history. The finale leaves you devastated with the characters' outcome, and leaves you with a feeling of sadness. This is most certainly one of the most powerful films of the 90's.

The Man with Two Brains (1983)

Positives:

- Extremly funny and silly
- Steve Martin is on top form..
- A very sweet romance at the centre...
- Greatest drunk driving test ever!

Negatives:

- Maybe too surreal and zany at points...
- The whole brain romance is sweet, but too weird...

Positives:
Probably the best Epic to come out of Hollywood during the '60's.
Proof that even when the studio is in complete control of the project,Kubrick is ace.
Brilliant peformances from Douglas,Olivier,Laughton and especially Ustinov...
The first 'realistic' battle scenes-featuring blood (Gasp!) and amputees (Fucking hell!!)
Marvellous score by Alex North.
Great credits sequence by Hitchcock fave Saul Bass.

Negatives:
Given the nature of the subject,it really should be a lot gorier (I'd point the finger at Gladiator here too...)
A bit talky in places,action-hounds might get a tad bored from time to time...

Verdict:A cerebral,brawny picture,that for once,truly deserves the name Epic. 5/5.

Positives

Its small and perfectly formed.
Its caring portrayal of a subject commonly assumed to be a bit sleazy.
Maggie Gyllenhall. Its her movie and she carries it beautifully.
For all its subtlety its incredibly sexy.

Negatives

Maybe having Spader in it detracts a little from the whole movie since, you know, this is kind of his thing and hes done it more than once. I liked him in it but maybe it would have benefitted from having someone who wasnt so well known for being good at "quiet, pervy, loner".
Also it may be a bit slow for some. Its not fast moving, something always happening kind of flick. But thats not necessarily a bad thing.

Verdict-4/5

Isn't the Brando,Kilmer and Thewliss atrocity from 1996.
Actually seems to be making a point about medical ethics...unlike the above.
Great make-up effects.
Has a genuinely creepy atmosphere for a PG movie.
Ace music score.
Burt Lancaster!! -''...Remarkable how the flesh re-asserts itself...''

Negatives:
FX have dated slightly.
Direction could be a tad more imaginitive.
However...I like this film a lot and it seems to have been forgotten by everyone.Check it out you adventurous fools!

Verdict: A beastly 4/5

North By Northwest (1959)

Positives:

- It's an Alfred Hitchcock film.
- Features typical Hitchcock thrills and moments.
- It's got a rivveting storyline.
- Features scathing Hitchcockian humour.
- Flawless dialogue.
- A marvellous musical score.
- Great cinematography.
- The finale.
- A perfect entry into the thriller genre.

Negatives:

- People may not be used to the acting style of that era, and may find it a little too over -the-top.
- Has typical shots from films in the 1950's. For instance, When the leading characters are walking through the train station, they're really in a studio with a screen playing in the background to make it look like they're in a train station. With today's special effects, you'll find this annoying and primitive. It'll feel like they're not moving at all, and it'll drag the intense of the situation for too long.
- The sets might look fake. But hey, what do you expect, that was the fifties and this is the 21st century.

North By Northwest is another essential Hitchcock film that stands as one of his finest works, and one of the key influences on today's filmmakers. You're guarenteed a grandious journey through the twists and turns of this thrilling ride, and with an exhilarating story and cast, this will keep you involved with the hazy shroud of mysteries that Hitchcock has layed out for us. Deffinately a film you need to watch more than one viewing. Glorious filmmaking.

Heat (1995)

Positives:

- This film turned Michael Mann into a filmmaking genius.
- Brilliantly written story and dialogue.
- The perfect cinematography.
- Epic opening sequence.
- Brilliantly choreographed shoot-outs.
- The acting is superb.
- The major bank heist, and it's realistic shoot-out. Incredibly well edited and shot.
- When De Niro and Pacino finnally appeared in a scene together. It was a long time coming.
- The finale is incredibly acted and executed.
- The music is stunning, especially the opening sequence and the perfectly suited music to the end.

Negatives:

- The average viewer will find this too long.
- People expecting just explosions, blood and guts, will be hugely surprised. This is a crime drama, not a full-blown action flick. The bank heist is the closest thing to "ACTION!" you'll get. You still shouldn't miss this one.
- People might find the film's plot to drag on a bit.

Michael Mann's masterpiece, Heat is a sparkling reminder of why this man is one of the best living filmmakers of modern cinema. His superb shooting style is gorgeously used here, and suits the "epic" crime feeling that bleeds plenty of substance and tons of style, Heat is quite simply breathtaking.This is a crime film crafted from Mann's stunning vision, and is his most mentioned film, and in this you can see why, with all the typical trademarks from him, this will keep you interested in Mann's capabilities as, not only a director, but as a writer too. Trully epic. You cannot go wrong with this, god-like director, immortal cast, intense gun fights, epic story, majestic cinematography, and perfectly edited, this is one of the perfect crime films.

Positives

Theresa Russell, who is generally an appalling actress most of the time, is excellent here. Shes clearly having the time of her life in all the different wigs and costumes and plays the part with relish.
Though its a boring argument, its very much a female driven movie. Debra Wingers character could easily have been played by a man and Russells character could have come across as 1 dimensional but together they really bring a different twist to the old femme fatale idea.
Its fun in a stupid, overdramatic way.

Negatives

Theres a slight feel of bad 80s tv movie about it. The music for example and the big reveal at the end is very overplayed.
We are never really told why Russells character does what she does. We get glimpses, like when she cries after the first funeral or the "you dont know till you live in her world" speech. But besides that we are just left to wonder.
Debra Winger. She just bores me.

Tremendous cast...everyone in this film is fantastic.
Beautifully directed; film doesn't lose pace or stall...
Looks incredible.Freddie Francis is ace.
James Horner's amazing music.
A compelling look at a subject from history many of us knew nothing about.
The assault on Fort Wagner...total blood and thunder stuff,you can feel the adrenaline course through your nervous system as the 54th Massachussetts charge into certain death,to the epic Orff-esque battle hymn pummelling you from the sound system...

Negatives:
None.It's a masterpiece.Does more for African-Americans than Spike Lee's entire catalogue.

Verdict:5/5.If you haven't seen this yet,set aside a couple of hours and treat yourself.

The last few films I've seen

Positives
-Some incredible battle sequence. They come quite close to Saving Private Ryan with regards to realism and horror
-Two solid central performances, particularly from Dong-Kun Jang as the elder brother.
-A story which shows atrocities being commited by both sides in the war, giving a relatively unbiased view

Negatives
-A bit patchy in places. It sometimes felt like scenes changed too abruptly, without giving the earlier scene time to finish.
-The drama and friction between the two brothers was nicely played for the most part, but sometimes became overwrought.
-As good as they are, the battle scenes occasionally lacked tension and the fast editing created confusion

Overall, an excellent war-film, a well-deserved 4/5

Postives
-Some genuinely gruesome and inventive set pieces.
-A tongue-in-cheek sense of humour. Never really took itself too seriously.

Negatives
-By this time we all know the formula for these films, and very little changed in this one, giving it a tremendous sense of predictability.
-The initial rollercoaster crash sequence had some alarmingly shoddy CGI work.
-The overall idea behind this, a rollercoaster disaster, doesn't have the same level of shock value as the two major incidents in the previous film.

This was never destined to become a classic, and is the weakest of the trilogy. Although it has many flaws it still provides a decent level of silly entertainment, and that can never be a bad thing - 3/5

Positives
-A generally fantastic cast. Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Martin Sheen, Alec baldwin, Vera Farmiga and Mark Wahlberg all shine, even when only given little screen time.
-Some terrifically brutal and gory sequences. The sight and sound of a bullet to the head has rarely been so effective.
-A great balance between bloody shootouts and the calmer, more emotional moments.

Negatives
-For all the plaudits recievd by Jack Nicholson, it still isn't a great Nicholson performance. He is good, but seemed wildly over-the-top to bring a great level of menace to the role.
-A few dodgy accents from time to time, Ray Winstone in particular.
-The film is being hailed as a return to form for Scorsese. It certainly is very good, but his last effort, The Aviator, was a better picture. Still, this a problem with overall perception of the film and not the film itself.

An extremely entertainig thrill-ride with a good story at it's centre - 4/5

I'm still useless at stuff like this, particularly with the negative aspect.

Positives
Takes its time establishing the characters.
Morgan Freeman is great, as usual.
The attack on the alien spaceship is well done.
A few horrible surprises ("You're not Jonesy...")

Negatives
The ending-just use the book's, it makes more sense than a stupid ending with no set up at all.
The tense chase in the last third of the book is changed into a cruise where there is no real fear at all.
The SFX are crap, with the exception of the chopper attack.
Mr. Gray's stupid British accent.
Should have been longer and more influenced by the book.

Overall
Better than its reputation suggests, but still loses its initial greatness with a boring chase and rubbish ending. 3/5

Terminator 2

Positives +
- Bloody good action
- making Arnie the good guy was a strokes of genius
- the T-1000 for fucks sake, can you get any better?
- not just an action film has some great dramatic moments to
- the extremly cool future war scene at the begging
- the guy playing Miles Bennett is fantastic
- some ground breaking sfx

Negatives -
- the kid playing John Conner can get a bit annoying & overacts a bit too much sometimes
- the thumbs up as Arnie is melting
- the line "I need a vacation"

overall *****

anyway -

City of God

Positives +
- Amazinly directed and shot
- Li'l Dice
- the grainy picture that gives it a more "real" feel
- theres no over the top violence
- the non liner story line
- how almost every seperate story comes full circle
- the overall style of the film
Negatives -
- could be too violent for some
- thats about it

The Mangler: Reborn (2005)

Positives
1. Spine-chilling original story.
2. Might make you look up the original short story from the book Night Shift by Stephen King.
3. Like Christine but in an old fashioned laundry press machine.
4. The DVD cover was kinda cool.

Negatives
1. I set myself up to believe that this sequel would be a cool and modern twist since the "mangler" was reborn.
2. Stupidest and most boring killer I have ever seen...ever. The killings are all the same Handyman goes on house calls and hits his customer/victim in the head with a �rubber� mallet�.don�t laugh�.he has to preserve the victims blood, the machine lives on human blood , you see. So the movie repeats this like a hundred times. Each time I think the handyman will do something clever to get his victim but, NO!, same old rubber sledgehammer to the head and drag the body home so the machine can eat.
3. But it gets worst because as I was waiting for a nice gory scene or some sophisticated mutilation, all we get is the camera shaking. Well it looks like the camera was put inside the machine and as it grinds it gears it shakes and its supposed to give the impression that the viewer is being mangled, but IT DOES NOT WORK!!!! It SUCKS !!! More than Universally possible for something to suck.

My final verdict ........1/5.... and im being kind.

* Im serious enough to re-write this film and give the original �Mangler� story a real good sequel.
DON�T RENT this -DON�T BUY this. You will regret it. Read the original story and become really spooked out. Tobe Hooper made a film of the original Mangler story, i have not viewed it.

The Big Red One: The Reconstruction (1980 - original release.)

Positives:

- Samuel Fuller's greatest war picture.
- For it's year, it has spectacular battle scenes.
- The opening sequence is stunningly shot and directed.
- Based on real events that (the director) Samuel Fuller experienced in World War II.
- Set in different fronts through out the film. North Africa, Sicilly, France, Belgium, and Germany.
- Has a classic "army" feel to the film with the music.
- Deep stories.
- Follows a German officer as well, who's pro Hitler.
- The D-Day sequence inspired Spielberg's Normandy landing in Saving Private Ryan.
- Tons of battle sequences.
- The brilliant assault on the mental institution.
- The second half of the film is awesome.
- The lovely black & white sequences.
- Sam Fuller's brief cameo is a camera man recording the soldiers and children in Germany.
- The reconstruction restored the classic to an even grander classic.

Negatives:

- This is considered a B-Grade war film, but don't let that fool you.
- The acting may feel a bit too 1950's to some. Sam Fuller mad war films in the fifties, so get used to it.
- The character who narrates, may be a bit annoying.
- People who are expecting tons of blood, will be dissapointed.

This is Sam Fuller's finest war film, with a budget of only $ 4 000 000, he manages to pull off one of the most memorable war films to date. With plenty of fantastic battle scenes, this will deffinitally not bore the viewer, some characters seem a bit patchy in places, but are still delivered safely by the actors and guided by the director. The final scenes are inspiring, that gives you a lump in your throat, but makes you feel happy for the soldiers final act of duty. A highly entertaining film.

Final Score: ****1/2

Positives

Brad Pitt, fantastic for change. Captures the essence of Louis, despite not looking a damn thing like the character should. (Tom Cruise should have taken notes, but we shall get to that later in the Negatives)
Its completely beautiful to look at. The costumes, the sets, the lighting. Neil Jordan really excells himself here.
Its perhaps the best and most competant attempt to adapt Anne Rices work to the screen.
On a completely superficial note, this is the very definition of an A List cast. You got a variety of heart throbs of the 90s in this film, Cruise, Pitt, Slater, Banderas. Someone at the studio must have been doing cartwheels the day the contracts were signed.
The music absolutely rocks! Particulary the opening song.

Negatives

Most of these are probably just nit picking from a former Anne Rice junkie so I apologise in advance

Tom Cruise. We've all heard this argument Im sure. He was not right to play Lestat. This was clearly the studio having their way and Jordan just buckling under the pressure.
Casting in general seemed a bit topsy turvy on this flick. For example, Banderas as Armand. Armand in the books is meant to be 19, auburn haired and russian. Instead we have a 30 year old spanish guy. The mind boggles.
Kirsten Dunst is technically on the mark yet just doesnt capture Claudias inner malice and resentment.
On the whole the film, whilst beautiful, isnt very sure of its footing. It doesnt really know when to bulk up on the scares and doesnt really play up on the potential humour it couldve had.
Youre left with a very cold feeling towards the characters. You dont even support Lestat (which is so wrong on so many levels), because Cruise is so abysmal.
Its maybe a bit over long and could bore a lot of people. It does just meander along.
Anyone looking for a real Horror movie wont find it in this. It too overdramatic. Not enough violence or blood. Virtually no suspense until the last scenes with Armand. It wouldnt sate those looking for a good scare.

A solid 3/5.

Sympathy For Lady Vengeance (2005)

Positives:

- The final film in Park Chan-wook's revenge trilogy.
- The lead role is played brilliantly by the beautiful Lee Young Ae.
- Choi Min-Sik is the bad guy this time round, rather than the man seeking revenge in Chan-Wook's previous film in the trilogy, "Oldboy". This time he's the the one being seeked down for revenge.
- Has typical Chan-wook trademarks.
- Stunning cinematography and editing. Very stylish.
- Bloody, but not over-used.
- Lot's of cameos from actors who appeared in the previous two vengeance films.
- Intruging story. Great to get involved.
- Great acting from the cast.
- The flashbacks are wonderfully done.
- The use of Vivaldi's music is achingly beautiful, suits the film's story perfectly.

Negatives:

- It's the weakest in the trilogy, yet it's still a grand film.
- Very disturbing, scenes may give you goose bumps, and might actually turn off the viewer. Works perfectly.
- This fits in the "style over substance" catagory.
- Fans expecting the trilogy to get gorier will get dissapointed. The trilogy starts off bloodiest, then it get's milder. This doesn't mean the film isn't bloody though, it's very bloody.

For the Park Chan-wook fan, this is an essential in your collection along side the artistic "Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance", the hard hitting "Oldboy", and this will complete the landmark "Vengeance Trilogy". This is a reason why you should get into the whole "World Cinema" crowd, with a great cast and director, this should please any subtitle hater, and should get you on what the art of cinema can offer. Once you watch this, you'll want to watch every foreign language film out there, you'll fall more and more inlove with what films can offer you, the viewer. So, if you haven't seen a foreign language film, here's a great place to start, and this will hopefully spark off your undying taste for the "World Cinema" circuit.

Cabin Fever (2001)

Positives
1. Excellent special effects. Especially the make-up, every scar and infection look real. There is snot, pus, blood, body fluids, tears everywhere and even some jock itch...okay i exaggerate...no jock itch.
2. Excellent gore factor, never has skin infections and pus look so nasty on film...(see The Fly), its the birth of Gorenography.
3. Interesting story concept...the whole flesh eating disease gives the film a different horror dynamic. Cool tense atmosphere throughout.
4. Excellent visuals if you enjoy gore...opening credits are gross. Shaving will never be the same ever again.
5. The decaying friend.
6. This gave Eli Roth an opportunity to work with Quentin Tarantino in Hostel.

Negatives
1. The cause of the ailment is never fully explained, it is hinted but not revealed.
2. Will definately turn the squeamish completely off with its gore and tons of blood and thats just in the first 20 minutes.
3. Not really polished and somewhat predictable

* If you love gore.....this is your film.

My final verdict ......4/5...... cause its just so nasty.
