Ghost In The Shell (1995)

Positives:

- It's a Mamoru Oshii film, guaranteed to be beautifully animated.
- Has all the trademarks of an Oshii feature, with long silences, long cuts, and complex story.
- Has great action sequences.
- Oshii always has big action in the beginning of his films, then through the rest of the film he builds up the tension, then he finnally puts the biggest action sequences at the end. Works fantastically well.
- Some pretty good voice acting.
- The final battle. Brilliantly put together. Stunning animation.

Negatives:

- The music will most probably get on your nerves.
- Lot's of people will get really confused with the story.
- People will find most of the nudity unessasary. It makes sense though.
- Some of the voice acting isn't great.
- The ending really hurts your head. Extremely hard to understand.

This is one of the most important anime films to date, along with Akira, it has inspired numerous films, directors, and ofcourse, animation. An anime you should atleast watch once, even if you're not the keen anime person(I'm not one myself). If you love the Sci-Fi genre, then you should give this one a shot. This is possibly one of the most loved anime's around, and every anime fan will tell you why. So, go on, give this one a try, it has all the key elements of a science fiction film, and can't go wrong for the Sci-Fi and the anime geek.

Final Score: ***1/2

Match Point

Positives
1. Story is very entertaining and keeps you guessing and wanting more, especially towards the tense climax. Just a cool way to tell an age old story.
2. Good acting by all involved, you can't help but hate or love the characters.Scarlett is magnificent in this and she looks good as always...even if she is a bit overrated.
3. Quite an unexpected ending.....superb twist.

Negatives
1. Moves fast in the beginning, so if you get up , you may miss new developments. The movie's pace kind of slows down to a crawl in certain places.
2. Over-hyped sex scene, if you wanna call it that.
3. Some of the characters get and don't get what they deserve.

4/5........

Im not a Wooy Allen fanatic, but i enjoyed this film and made me want to see what else i may have missed from this acclaimed director.

Positives
1. The opening shot -the pullaway from earth into space is just simply fantastic! Wow !
2. Great fun if you are a sci-fan, have an interest in anything to do with outer space and what may be out there. Very cool science involved.
3. Tremendous storytelling and directing. Brilliant execution of images and storytelling. Directing was terrific...
4. The receiving of the "message", the deciphering of the "message" and the results from the "message" are tense and extremely entertaining.
5. One particular scene almost made me turn the movie off in anger......thankfully someone comes to the rescue. Awesome!!!!

Negatives
1. Really unneccesary boring and dull love story moments. And seems to be longer than it should due to this.
2. May confuse the viewer who is not familiar with astronomy and astro-physics. The film is very cerebral and will only fully entertain you if you have some interest in the material.
3. Once our protagonist comes back from you know where, we are left to wonder if it really happened.
4. May need multiple viewings to grow on you ( I totally recommend multiple viewings)

.........5/5
I'm being biased, this is one if not my fave Sci-fi film.

* I usually get negative feedback on this film regarding the journey and what is seen...if you listen to the dialogue, it makes total sense. I put myself in that place and the reality may have been a bit too frightening to any of us.
Also this film gets negative criticism from the nerds because it is not a mirror image of the book. Thats cool. But not everyone reads the book......I didn't.

Positives:
Arnold was born to play Conan.
Retains the atmosphere of Robert E. Howard's stories (although most of this is original material).
Is played entirely serious.
Incredible production design by Ron Cobb.
One of the best film scores ever,by Basil Poledouris.
Kick-ass,bloody action scenes.

Negatives:
Might be too much of a macho-bastard-testosterone-in-the-red-cock-fest for female viewers.
Should have sired a full-blooded  franchise of Conan classics-instead we ended up with the camp-as-knickers Conan The Destroyer and Red Sonja(Cue RE Howard spinning like a dervish on the whizz in his grave)

I love this movie...5/5

Positives
Brilliant acting from all, especially Slyvester Stallone and Burgess meredith.
A great story and script
Loved the fact that, for Rocky, it's not about winning the fight, but giving a good account of himself.
Fight scenes look excellent and more believible than most boxing/sport movies.
The score
The direction
Movie is packed with iconic, 'movie moments'.

Negatives
I honestly can't find any. Rocky is one of the best movies ever made.

5/5

The Machinist

Positives:

~ Christian Bale. Ok, he lost all that weight to become skeletal, blah blah blah, and it is very shocking, but that becomes secondary to a fantastic performance.
~ A true insight into the nightmare of insomnia.
~ Great use of colour. The whole film is presented in an almost monochrome tone, with the key car involved standing out in a vivid red.
~ Keeps you guessing. What's real, what's imagined from lack of sleep?
~ Great soundtrack - helps to give the film a very Hitchcockian feel.

Negatives:

~ Yes, the film keeps you guessing, but not for too long once you're into the second half of the film.
~ Becomes a little predictable towards the end.
~ I found it very hard to look at Christian Bale when he was undressed (amazingly!) - he almost disappears when he turns side on  It's quite distressing!

In conclusion, this bleak tale may not be to everyone's taste, but if you are a fan of psychological thrillers, and willing to sit through the first 20 minutes or so until it gets into full swing, you'll be in for a treat
....4/5

Positives:
Absolutely gorgeous cinematography.
Stunning art/set direction.
Amazing Make-up FX (Tim Curry's Darkness is still awesome...)
Ace Jerry Goldsmith score.
Interesting Tangerine Dream score (If you live across the pond...).
More adult-oriented fairytale/fantasy.
Mia Sara.

Negatives:
Slightly aloof-may leave some viewers cold.

Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm (1993)

Positives:

- It's all hand drawn.
- The animated feature from the creators of the classic tv series "Batman: The Animated Series".
- Gorgeous animation.
- Very dark, not for kids. What Batman is intended to do.
- Features the best Joker ever, Mark Hammil. He has the most sinister Joker laugh. He is The Joker.
- Brilliant storyline. Even better than the Batman live-action films of the eighties and the nineties.
- Fantastic musical score.
- Use of blood.
- Sizziling dialogue.
- A great finale. Making you wonder what happened.

Negatives:

- Too dark for kids. Could give the very young nightmares.
- Too violent for children, use of blood, and violence. Wont please the over-protective parent.
-
Some of the flashbacks might be a bit cheesy for the fussy.
- The end credits has terrible music.
- The film is too short. Only 70+ minutes. Still brilliant.

Mask Of The Phantasm is arguably better than the Tim Burton and other Batman spinoffs from the nineties. It had stronger story, emotional characters, intense action, snappy dialogue, and "edge of your seat" thrills. The film suits Batman perfectly, giving him an origin, his desire for a normal life, and showing us his detective skills. The Batman nut will be hugely satisfied with this classic, as it has more depth and story to the regular Batman film, as well as obvious nods to Batman graphic novels and story arcs. With an inspired script, a determined cast, fluid animation, heartfelt characters, and it's gorgeously dark style, this will please every Batman and film buff alike, and most certainly should please the average viewer.

Final Score: *****

X-MEN : THE LAST STAND

Positives
Great action sequences
New mutants (Kitty Pride, Beast, Juggernaught, Dark Phoenix)
Not over long
De-ageing Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian Mckellen. Brilliant

Negatives
Disposing of to many mutants, in one way or another
New mutants (Angel, most of the brotherhood)
Jean Grey/Logan love relationship should have ended in the first movie
Not enough Colosus

Over all, no better and no worse than parts 1+2
3.5/5

X-Men: The Last Stand

Positives
1. Some really cool sequences where the special effects excel.
2. Unexpected situations for main characters that left me saying, holy crap.
3. Jean Grey's ressurection and the bridge sequence.

Negatives
1. The mutant with the pegasus wings was pretty useless. He saves his father and thats about it.
2. The "cure" child.....there was potential there and it goes nowhere
3. Juggernaut's muscles looked extremely fake. Why not find a real bodybuilder?
4. Didn't have the comic book "feel" of the first two films and some real inconsistencies during the final battle on the bridge.
5. The actors looked bored.....or maybe it was just me.

* This installment seemed rushed and not thought out. Definatley inferior to its two predecessors.

......my final verdict.......3/5

Fantastic 4 (PG)

Positives:
  • Exceeded my expectations by not sucking an unholy amount of ass.  In fact, it was good fun while it lasted.
  • Chris Evans - just having a ball in every scene.  Plus the Storm / Thing relationship really worked.
  • The Alba.  Just criminally hot.

Negatives:
  • Once it finished, I pretty much forgot about it straight away.
  • Dr Doom.  A bit weak, I'm afraid.
  • The Alba.  Hot but dull.

Verdict: 3/5

Bonnie And Clyde (1967)

Positives:

- The opening credits sequence was well done.
- Some good cinematography
- No fast cuts, long fluid shots works very well.
- Gene Hackman is in it.
- It's the story of Bonnie and Clyde.
- Some good dialogue.

Negatives:

- All the critical acclaim heaped onto this, completely ruins it.
- Some terrible acting.
- The actors overact.
- Some primitive editing.
- Sometimes you don't have a clue what just happened.
- You don't feel for any of the characters, therefore losing interest in the film.
- Alot of cheesy moments.

Bonnie And Clyde dissapointed me imasciously, with some weak characters, sloppy editing, over-the-top acting, and just plain boring plot that doesn't grab the viewer's attention. Arthur Penn has his moments here, but his direction doesn't seem to save this crime caper. The script felt like it had no inspiration, as if they couldn't think of any good ideas, the script was completely flawed, with some cheesy dialogue that makes you wonder why you even bothered in the first place. The film's amount of holes don't stop, it's as if they didn't even bother with this, one of those films that could've been superb, but didn't. This is most certainly one of the most overrated films of all time.

Final Score: **

GLADIATOR (2000)

Positives:

- Russell Crowe - Maximus is his best performance to date.  Crowe plays him with passion and dedication.  Maximus is as hard as nails - a true gladiator and soldier, but at the same time has a deep love of his family and Marcus Aurelius, Crowe portrays this excellently

- Joaquin Phoenix - Plays Commodus very well - You can sense the fear and desire for power he has

- Supporting acting - (i maybe should have lumped all the acting together, but felt Crowe and Phoenix deserved special mention).  The supporting cast is excellent with impressive performances from Oliver Reed and Djimon Hounsou in particular.

- Beautiful GCI shots of Rome and the Colosseum (breathtaking!)

- Beautiful shots of Maximus' flashes of the afterlife with his family - in particular, when he's running his hands through his crops as he walks through them

- The opening battle scene - very gritty and realistic - you feel like you're part of the fight

- Maximus and commodus fight - just awesome!

- The gladiator battles in the Colosseum and impressive and exciting!

- One of my all time favourite scenes in a film - when Maximus reveals himself to Commodus and says THAT line:

My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.

-> Gives me shivers EVERY time

- Awesome Taglines!

What we do in Life, echoes in Eternity

A general who became a slave, a slave who became a Gladiator, a Gladitor who defied an Emperor

- Beautiful ending

Negtives:

I really can;t think of any!!!  I love Gladiator so much, and it's definately in my top 10 favourite films!

If someone held a gun to my head, I might be forced to admit that Connie Nielsen annoys me a tiny wee bit

Rating - 5/5 of course!

(Empire robbed Gladiator of it's fifth star!)

Positives
  • Its originality.  Cant really think of another movie that has such an imaginitve premise. Maybe Frighteners but even its not as weird as this.
  • Ambitious effects and unsual look.
  • Its cast is very decent
  • Micheal Keaton. Fantastic. Outshines everyone.

Negatives
  • An old arguement but not enough Keaton. I understand not wanting to use him too much but his role is just that bit too minimal.
  • Its an uneasy mixed bag of comedy, drama and horror. None of it seems to gel consistently
  • It lacks heart. Its good to look at but you find yourself getting a little bored towards the end. The supporting characters are all a little too horrible and Geena and Alec are too goody goody.
  • Winona Ryder. Just because.

Dust Devil  (1992)

Positives
1. Awesome cinematography. The desert never looked so cool and creepy...you can feel the sense of  the lost souls and broken spirits.
2. Decent acting, especially from the villian. Lead female is quite sexy...The narration in the background adds tension and fills in the holes.
3. Set in South Africa, the film was actually shot in Namibia and it is a beautiful landscape, when the wind isn't blowing.
4. The crime scenes have a very dark and dreadful feel to them, like in Se7en. Extremely healthy dose of gore, the stomach tied to the door knob was hilarious.
5. Cool story concept of satan-like shape shifter comes from the desert in search of victims, a spirit the locals call the dust devil. He prays on the lonely and the unloved, those that have already lost everything but life itself....

Negatives
1. Unfortunately it is very noticible that the director was more concerned with the visuals than the story- and the film suffers for that. This could have been a solid thriller like the film "Candyman".
2. I watched the version where the deleted scenes are included and while the scenes are still cool, they are still in their original format, they look like bootleg scenes and sometimes the reel count at the bottom gets annoying!!!
3. Grainy shots that didnt make the final cut, are hard to view....like what you see in low quality VHS Kung-Fu films.
4. Starts promising and then is hampered by over-directing.
5.  The abusive husband is such a brutal actor.

* It had my attention after the first murder.
Then lost me in the middle with all the running around of all the characters. Couldve been scarier considering what the villian does with the bodies.

.....My final verdict......3/5.....

Stick It

Positives
1. Cool perspective of gymnasts and the extremely hard work they have to do just to compete at a national level, nevermind the Olympics.
There are 3,600 Navy Seals....but only 200 elite gymnasts in the entire world.
2. The way the "in-house" competition is shot with the overlapping of the girls. looked cool when all the girls look as if they are on the equipment at the same time.
3. They dont let us know until the third act why the main character walked out on her teammates....belivable explanation for it also. Decent message about family and why you should only believe in yourself.. blah-blah-blah.

Negatives
1. I was expecting more of a "Bring it On" fun storyline.....it was more of a "Don't bring it on, again." storyline. Obnoxious supporting characters. The oriental girl was specially stupid and her blonde friend was equally as dumb.
2. Kind of a real girlie film. Definately targeted for 9-15 year old girls or boys who will get boners from the gymnast and their "leos".
3. Although I do like a bit of the old tomboy in a girl....after a while i was tired of seeing the main character trying to act tough and damn nearly put a brother to sleep with her stupid faces.
4. The main characters friends....they act like they are stoned but it's never made clear and they get kind of corny too.

*Yawn*...what was i saying...Oh, yeah.....

My final verdict .....2/5...
I'd like to change this films name to "Miss It".
This gave me the same feeling i had when i watched The Benchwarmers, but atleast that had profanity and decent fart jokes.
Please watch something else.

Positives:
Great ensemble cast...
Taut,suspenseful direction from Walter Hill...
Awesome music by Ry Cooder...
Great action scenes...
One-armed Cajun hick and his in-bred pals vs. the Louisiana National Guard...What's not cool about that?

Negatives:
Might be a little close to Deliverance for some people (Less buggery though)
Cajuns really do seem like a bunch of assholes according to this...

Verdict: A well-made,above-average Adventure/Thriller...4/5.

Positives

  • Its unabashed darkness. So different to say the Little Mermaid or Beauty and the Beast where theres a lot symbolism going on. We have what is basically racism and genocide going on right there and theres no attempt to hide it.
  • Tom Hulce as Quasimodo. Heartbreaking and wonderful.
  • Frollo, the ultimate baddie. Worse than Scar. Worse than Malificient. Worse than them all.
  • The songs. Breathtaking. The best songs in any Disney film ever. I defy anyone not to cry at Heavens Light or Out There or God Help the Outcasts. And the opening theme is just magnificent.
  • I really liked Demi Moore as Esmerelda. Spunky and sweet.

Negatives.

  • Its perhaps too adult for most children. The song Hell Fire for example is pretty chilling as it deals with intense sexual attraction and wanting to kill the object of affection for causing it.
  • The gargoyles. Clearly thrown as an attempt to keep it kid friendly.
  • Kevin Kline as Phoebus. Just a really weak male lead.
  • The leader of gypsies whose name escapes me. Hes just shit.
