Moulin Rouge 1952

Positives:

1. Colourful film
2. Really captured how Paris must have been in the late 1800's
3. Good characters
3. Good story and quite sad

Negatives:

1. The film was just a little bit too long

Biopic of the artist Toulouse-Lautrec. It did cover his life as an artist, but mostly about how his disability affected his life and blighted his relationships with women and how he wanted a women to love him, but ruined it when he found one who did. Good film 4/5

Positives:

- Hysterically funny and witty at moments...
- Great characters like the Wolf, squirrel, goat and rabbit...
- The always wonderful Patrick Warburton as the wolf...
- Hugely entertaining...

Negatives:

- The animation was a bit low-budget and weird...
- Some unnecessary songs...
- A bit too short and brisk...

POSITIVES - new korean setting is great
                   - looks sooooo beautiful
                   - hot lead guy
                   - hot lead woman
                   - slow build-up with tragic pay-off that you catually care about

Positives:
Quite possibly the most visually beautiful film ever committed to celluloid.
Marvellous use of source/period music.
Watch a thoroughgoing bastard use and abuse all around him in pursuit of his feckless ambitions.
Best 'assault-on-an-in-law-in-blind-rage' scene ever...

Negatives:
At 3 hours,it may be too long for some.
If you don't appreciate Kubrick,you're screwed...

Personally,I'm mad into it...5/5.

Goodfellas (1990)

Positives:

- It's a Martin Scorsese picture.
- Corcking dialogue.
- Scorsese's typical music selection. There's hardly a moment where there's no music in the film. It's absolutely great!
- Ray Liotta is impressive here.
- The film has Bobby De Niro.
- Joe Pesci as the pitbull Tommy De Vito. Chilling.
- Lorraine Bracco is excrutiatingly brilliant in this. Deffinately one of the best in this.
- That glorious tracking shot through the night club.
- The change of music through the different years.
- Typical Scorsese shots.
- Another thrilling opener.

Negatives:

- In a Scorsese film, especially his crime films, expect some blood. This has plenty of it, and might be unsettling to some.
- This film is in the top ten films for the most swear words ever used in a film. The word "fuck" is blasted 300 times, so don't expect a disney product here. I'll say again, the sensitive will get uncomfortable.
- Tommy De Vito's acts aren't very "mild", when he kills, alot will get turned off almost emidiatly.
- The film's violence is graphic, I'm saying this again, because if you're a humanitarian, then you'll quite possibly turn the TV off because of the gritty violence.
- The film ends. Darn!
- Lost the best picture and best director award to Dances With Wolves. You'll cry after watching this and realise that it's criminal that Dances With Wolves is "considered better" than Goodfellas. Hogwash!

This is another Scorsese classic you should have. It's not just blood and profound language, it's art. Brilliantly edited by Thelma Schoonmaker, awe inspiring cinematography and brutal performances. A powerful film that won't be swallowed easily, but once you manage to swallow the blood soked masterpiece that is Goodfellas, then you'll be asking for seconds. Brutal, bloody, and gorgeous. If you could define Scorsese, this is it.

Positives
1. Totally believable characters and terrific acting. Ed Norton , Jr is at his best. Amazing performance, truly convincing as the very intelligent and intense skinhead Derek Vineyard.
2. Great script and screenplay.
3. This film has such heart and the subject of racism is so damn gripping that it makes you look into yourself. This film clearly shows why racism can spread and why there will never be a cure for it...most hatred come from opinions formed by someone you respect and admire like a parent.
4. The way the story is told through Danny's essay paper is magnificent. I like the way the story is visually told , the way that when we are visiting the past, the scenes are in black and white- and the present time is in color.

Negatives
1. The End....I dont mean it in a cinematic way, but how it leaves you feeling.
2. When Derek faces off with Cameron and gets totally away with it. Aryan Nation does not play around like that.
3. Very brutal graphic violence....not really a negative for me, but may be for you. The prison rape scene was very tough to watch for me though. Man, that was disturbing.
4. For mature family viewing only. Racism is like cancer, it spreads and is always a very tough subject to watch and to deal with.

Incredible , intense and in your face..... 5/5 .....

*Being from the Northeast in the USA, I live in a extremely diverse state. Racism is alive and well here. Although there is more tolerance today, post 9/11 of course, a person of color still is discriminated against. This film weighs both sides of the coin, that is why I enjoy it. Its not just, we are colored and you hate us. Instead its more like, you are of color and unfortunately I have been hurt by someone from your race. Its such a double edged sword.

Positives:
An utterly brilliant,endlessly quotable,thoroughly unique script...
Career-best performances from the entire cast.
Some truly 'make-your-drink-shotgun-through-your-nostrils' funny moments.
A beautifully-realized depiction of it's time and place.
Some of the best swearing you'll ever hear...

Negatives:
I personally can't think of any,unless you think being inherently English is a negative...

I can't recommend this highly enough.5/5.

Say Anything (1989)

Positives:
John Cusack.
Joan Cusack.
An opportunity to wallow in an 80's film, which I had not seen before.
Wonderful storyline and the character of Lloyd Dobler - a loyal, supportive, protective, boyfriend-to-be - is a pleasure to watch for an old romantic.
Cusack's quirky neurosis being carried off onscreen can relate to why he was cast in one of my favourite movies of all time (Grosse Pointe Blank)

Negatives:
Very boy meets girl in its portrayal, although it's ok if you were expecting nothing else.

World Trade Center - 4/5

Positives:
1. Nicolas Cage is on fine form, and Michael Pena once again proves he is an actor to watch. Maria Bello was as excellent as ever.
2. A superb portrayal of the panic and chaos of the day
3. A terrifying recreation of the collapsing towers, shown from a perspective only the survivors could have known.
4. Effective use of actual footage from the day

Negatives:
1. Perhaps one soppy flashback too many.
2. Same goes for the visions
3. Maggie Gyllenhaal isn't my favourite actress, and she did nothing here to improve my opinion.

Almost unbearable to watch at times, extremely moving (I was almost in tears near the end) and a fine telling of just one of the many stories that could be told from 9/11.

Casino(1995)

Positives:

- The opening sequance, with opera music being played. Yet another memorable Scorsese opener.
- A Scorsese picture.
- Another psychotic mob character played by Joe Pesci.
- Bobby De Niro gets the lead role again under Scorsese. And yes, he's awesome.
- The acting is trumendous, they really make you feel abouth the characters that are portrayed here.
- Sharon Stone's solid performance as Ginger, love interest to De Niro's character Sam Rothstein. Her performance makes you hate her even more.
- The trademark style of music that Scorsese uses in his crime films, is evident here, with plenty of Marty's most used band, The Rolling Stones.
- Same glorious direction and cinematography that equals previous masterpiece Goodfellas.
- Strong story with great characters.
- Shocking conclusion that will leave you stunned, and satisfied.

Negatives:

- Again, another Martin Scorsese film with graphic violence. I think it suited the grittieness of the film, but if you're squeemish, then you will definately encounter moments that will shake you to the bone. Casino is bloodier than Goodfellas, so if you're expecting Marty to tone down, then you're wrong. Contains the infamous "Head in vice" scene. Even the biggest gorehounds might find this disturbing.
- Lots of drug-use. Makes perfect sense why there's lots of drug use though.
- Tons of cursing. More F words than Goodfellas. This might get you uncomfortable when they're mouthing off.
- Not for the sensitive!
- The average viewer might find this too long. The film is aproximitly 178 mins. The film buff wont mind though.

This is the essential companion to Goodfellas, and is Scorsese's "other" masterpiece. Like Goodfellas, this is based on true events, so you'll see what Vegas was like in the seventies and the early eighties. Powerful performances here from the leading cast, who were in Scorsese's hands, pull of a blinding ride through life and crime in the big time gambling world of the seventies and eighties. The finale is something that is more brutal and horrific than previous Scorsese films. With an ending you'll either hope for or dread for, when it finnally comes, you'll leave your seat realising you just witnessing an extraordinary and brutal event that will leave you lusting for more.

Must Love Dogs

Positives
1. The beautiful Diane Lane, she makes this film tolerable, while not as slutty as she was in Unfaithful, she still shines and looks sexier than ever in a more conservative role.
2. Fun characters all around, each one brings something fun to the film. Elizabeth Perkins is hilarious as the sister.
3. Some genuinely funny moments and some a little recycled but are executed marvellously. The Internet dating scenerios were comical, especially the 15 year old who shows up to "claim" his true love.

Negatives
1. I did roll my eyes at some of the sentimental dialogue at times.
2. Somewhat predictable and full of recycled dating cliches.
3. While tolerable, it is still a chic-flick and the sappy love stuff gets dull at times.

.....4/5 ... for its ability to entertain me, even if it was a chic-flick.

* Now i dont know that i'd watch this film if Diane Lane wasnt the main character. With that being said, it is still a chic-flick. Fellas' if you are looking for a great date film, rent or buy this so you always have it handy. Your date will LOVE it, you'll TOLERATE it and might even laugh. Anyhow, im off to watch "The Devil's Rejects" again to get some of this rom-com "stank" off of me....well did you honestly think I'd be watching "Under the Tuscan Sun" next ?.......hahahaha.

Ran (1985)

Postives:

- This is King Lear reimaginned.
- Beautiful locations.
- Magnificent and unique cinematography. There's not one close up or reaction shot.
- Tip-top editing.
- Rich and fluid colours make the film even more beautiful.
- Perfect direction by the master of cinema, Akira Kurosawa.
- Strong performances, especially Tatsuya Nakadai as Lord Hidetora, Jinpachi Nezu as Hidetora's son Jiro, and Mieko Harada as Lady Kaede.
- Acting style is influenced by Japanese Noh Theatre.
- Kurosawa's last great masterpiece.
- The battle scene's had no special affects what so ever. The battle's are beautifully composed by Kurosawa. Almost like a Ballet.
- The score is memorable, haunting, and beautiful. Used exceptionally well.
- Plenty of longshots and medium shots. This looks like it inspired Michael Mann's shooting style.
- The ending is tragic, definately something you won't forget easilly. A perfect ending to a cracking story.

Negatives:

- Some people may think it's boring.
- People who are expecting a 100% King Lear adaptation might get dissapointed. Very rare occasion though.
- Gorehounds will enjoy the bloodiness, but wont think the blood looks real.
- The film is a "mere" 160 mins. Alas, everthing has to end.

This is Akira Kurosawa's last great masterpiece. All his blood, sweat, and tears were thrown into this, and he created a piece of undenying beauty that awards the viewer and the most avid Shakespearian historian. This masterpiece is made with every piece of love Kurosawa had for filmmaking and is somewhat like a masterful painting, beautiful with every stroke, every colour, every detail, and every piece of imagination. A film that keeps you in Kurosawa's magnificent ballet, and then leaves you in awe once the experience is over. Kurosawa's most beautifully painted masterpiece, with every brush stroke dedicated to his passionate love for one of the most powerful forms of art, cinema.

Pitt and Bana own the characters of Achilles and Hector,respectively.
Ace use of CG armies.
The final Achilles vs. Hector battle.
No Gods appearing,intervening and generally being nosey bastards like in Homer's original text.
The return of the classic Braveheart barrel-chested triumvirate of Brian Cox,Brendan Gleeson and James Cosmo.

Negatives:
Insipid performances from Diane Kruger,Orlando Bloom and Peter O'Toole...
Too many liberties taken with the original story,resulting in all manner of surprises for those who studied Classical literature.
Battle scenes could be grittier.

I'm biased when it comes to things like this,still I enjoyed it and would recommend it.I think it's due a re-appraisal. 4/5.

Gypsy 1962

Positives:

1. Rosalind Russell was brilliant as the pushy mother Rose, where nothing is more important to her than being stars, she stole the film
2. It was quite a sad story, but still had a happiness about it

Negatives:

1. The songs weren't much good

Based on the life of Burlesque dancer Gypsy Rose Lee concentrating mostly on her childhood with her pushy mother.
When her sister, the star of the act elopes Gypsy is made the star of the act, but vaudeville is ending and the act is rubbish.
Rose (the mother) is going to get married and leave the business until she hears a theatre manager say their star stripper has been arrested and she talks Gypsy into taking the role, saying they can retire then as stars.
Gypsy reluctantly does the routine, becomes a big success and no longer needs her mother to guide her and her mother gets pushed out.
I felt sorry for the mother character, she was left by most of the people in her life. She wanted to be a star, but pushed her children instead.

Bedazzled (2000)

Positives
1. Fun storytelling and great "message", plus a fun ending. Great makeup, the subtle changes in Eliot's appearance from wish to wish are fun.
2. Liz Hurley as the Devil in tight outfits, need i say more??....Brendan Frasier and the actors featured in his "wishes" they are all terrific and hilarious, especially Orlando Jones.
3. Truly funny moments...especially how the devil finds a way to ruin all of Eliot's wishes. Check out the Special Features and the extended basketball scene.

Negatives
1. The story gets a bit redundant by the third wish....
2. It shows how rotten and cruel people can be, It's true, some people are treated bad like Eliot for being different or not fitting in.
3. Don't expect to learn anything or expect a cinematic breakthrough.

...3/5......Definately has its comedic moments....and satisfying message.

* I enjoy this film everytime I watch it, I laugh and pull for Eliot. This is a great date movie, especially if you are watching it with the guy or girl who wont commit because they are waiting for the perfect mate. Or if you are watching it with a person who has a crush on someone who rarely acknowledges them.

Buffalo Soldiers (2001)

Positives

1. Joaquin Phoenix. This guy can't go wrong can he?
2. Ed Harris. For a change, he's not a villian, and the film is all the better for it
3. A very different war film. No angry drill sergeants, no bloody battles etc. And although I am a big fan of war films, it's nice to see something different
4. That guy from Cool Runnings is in it

. The main dude, the fast one!

Negatives

1. Not enough Ed Harris!
2. It's not really that funny. There's a bunch of quotes on the box about 'funniest film of the year', 'hilarious' etc, but I didn't see it myself
3. Anna Paquin. I don't like her at all, and today I found out I'm not the only one
4. No lasting impact. I finished it about an hour ago, and I'm already forgetting it

I'd personally give Buffalo Soldiers a 5/5, but anyway...

STIR OF ECHOES

Positives:

- Kevin Bacon is terrific, very unnerving yet brilliant...
- Great use of Paint it Black by Rolling Stones...
- Very creepy, some jump moments, but neatly done...
- Satisfying and very gripping ending and outcome...

Negatives:

- Maybe some confusing moments near the end...

4/5: A Superb movie that The Sixth Sense wishes it was...

Brazil (1985)

Positives

1. Umm...it came out the year I was born
2. Robert De Niro was ok in it
3. Michael Palin was good come to think of it
4. Yeah...that's about it

Negatives

1. Maybe I didn't watch it closely enough, but I had no clue what was going on. I'm certainly not an idiot, I'm more than capable of following a film and knowing what it's about, but this one lost me
2. Jonathan Pryce. I've never warmed to this guy in any of the films I've seen him in, and Brazil didn't help matters
3. I'm looking back on it now, trying to figure certain things out, but I'm just lost. Maybe someone could explain it all to me!
4. Boring. I thought it was anyway. I'm sure there's a Brazil fan reading this thinking 'I hate him, he doesn't know what he's talking about, I think I'll break his legs. That'll show him'
5. Ok, so maybe I just didn't 'get it'. But I'm not going to watch it again to find out anyway

The New World (2005)

Positives

1. Some gorgeous shots
2. It's proved to be that Terrence Malick is vastly ovverated. Badlands is nothing special, The Thin Red Line isn't too bad, but there's better war films out there. I've not seen Days of Heaven, and quite frankly I don't want to. Three of his films is enough for me
3. A cure for insomnia

Negatives

1. Mind-numbingly boring. Four times I stopped this film to have a break (10 minutes, a few hours, 2 days in one case)
2. The constant voiceovers! Jesus, they were tedious. And they were never about anything important. Garrr!!
3. Colin Farrell. I usually like pretty much anything this guy is in (yes, even SWAT

), but he was just strolling through this, making googly eyes at some 15 year old
4. I'll be honest, I didn't even finish the film. So I'm not really in a position to write this review, but what the hey! I think I switched off before Christian Bale showed up, so maybe it borders on bearable when he shows his mug

Positives:

1) Made in the UK
2) Thankfully a fairly unknown or low key cast
3) Great Soundtrack
4) Better zombies than most films...

Negatives:

1) Didn't have the budget of Dawn of the Dead Remake or Resident Evil
2) Kinda portrayed British Armed Forces as a bunch of horny rapist paedophile types..
3) Wasn't enough dark humour (see Dog Soldiers)
4) Deserved a follow up

The Children�s Hour (1961)

Positives:
The wonderful cast of Audrey Hepburn, Shirley MacLaine, Fay Bainter and James Garner.
An extremely powerful and sometimes unbearable storyline, which churns out some of the most incredible performances from every individual.
Most scenes in which a confrontation takes place, no musical interlude commences and the audience is left with a deafening silence in which all you can do is digest the absolute horror of the situation.
The speech between MacLaine and Hepburn nearer the conclusion of the story is poignant and beautiful, yet vague and distressing all at one time.

Negatives:
Mary Tilford is pure evil as she never hinders the progression of the lie and blackmails Rosalie in turn to tell � it sends bile up to your throat in absolute disgust � even if that is what you are meant to feel.
The finale was difficult to absorb and it leaves the viewer feeling depressed and sickened by the actions of the town and a few persons in particular.

A tale of how one spiteful schoolgirl�s malicious rumour can ruin the lives of three innocent people. This film demonstrates the uncompromising disgrace a small town can cause upon �outsiders� when Mary Tilford tells her grandmother that the two schoolteachers are conducting a lesbian relationship within the walls of the schoolhouse. Children are extradited from the educational establishment as soon as the grandmother spreads the news, which she believes wholly to be fact. Although the two women in question sue for �slander�, the case is dismissed and they become newspaper headlines.

5/5 It can be a somewhat uncomfortable viewing, but the performances are remarkably addictive to watch.
