Remember Avatar? Of course you do, everyone has seen it by now. Excellent movie, without question. Now, keeping in mind its astronomical budget, would you think it's possible to make such a brilliant movie with only a budget of, say, just over $1 million. Well, Saw hits the nail on the head right there. Of course, Saw is in no way, shape or form anything like Avatar, but if you're into this sort of thing, it's just as worthwhile. Part of the appeal of Saw is the concept. A serial killer who places people in elaborate death traps, giving them a chance to escape, but at a price (usually some sort of body part), thus showing them the value of life. I mean come on! Try and keep a straight face and tell me that that's not being original. And that cliff-hanger of an ending is way too unexpected to not be original. Of course, the low budget also brings some drawbacks. Unlike the sequels, there's only one depiction of the inside of the human body here, but it just isn't very convincing. Also, it means they couldn't afford any really good actors, although I guess Danny Glover and Michael Emerson were alright. Besides, its not like you ever really do get any good acting in these kinds of movies anyway. All that aside, Saw shows all those stuffed-up, big-budget movies how things are done in the world of rugged simplicity, and for that alone, I would recommend it to anyone. Although, if you have a weak stomach, you'll probably sh*t bricks!
