 Had the serious misfortune to catch 40 minutes of this at an advance preview last night. God, it sucked. So bad, even the UK Film Council wouldn't touch it. Kid, obssesses over getting onto University Challenge one day sees his opportunity when he enters the entrance exam. He gives answers to reasonably attractive blonde girl who pips him into the team by 1 point, but eventually gets onto the team when 1 of the other contestants is knocked down. It borrows so heavily from 4 Weddings, Say Anything, Billy Elliot, etc. Absolutely fucking awful. Not a funny line in the whole time my mate & I stayed.

I don't know much about the film indutry...so this one have some sort of the trouble with the film council. what exactly does the film council do tho?

Basically they provide funding so that garbage like this sadly clogs up the schedule of your local cinema. Virtually everything their name is attached to is awful, with the exception of London to Brighton which premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival this year.
The premise for this film wouldn't even make for a mildly distracting 30 minute 1 off BBC3 pilot.

okay, the film might not be great, and yes, the premise *sounds* dreadful (but then again, so would have Donnie Darko etc), but you really ought to give the book a try.

how can you not like this film. i also saw an early screening and sat thru the whole film with a smile on my face, james mcavoy is true actor and star - adorable!

My mate managed to get into a press screening for this movie and thought it was ace. James McAvoy was brilliant and the whole thing was like a Brit High Fidelity. Sounds top class stuff!

if you can be bothered to prove that this thread has more newbies than any other, then i might think about posting all my film opinions on this site. as it is, that would be ridiculous - i just happen to be interested in this film. and i don't think that it's so odd that a newbie should be, considering it's based on a novel.

a question for un-hating regular users of the forum: do these kinds of accusations actually pop up frequently?

 My point is that after I slated the film, there seemed to be  a lot of newbies (6 including you) posting on here which I thought odd, especially since none of them have posted anywhere else. You joined the forum on 2/3/06 and have only made 4 posts... All on Starter For Ten. You have to admit, it's a little curious...
 
Maybe I'm being a little cynical. Maybe I'm dead right. Whatever, if lamentable humour, soap opera performances and amateur film-making skills are you're thing, you are bound to love this film. It seems you already do...

I read this book about a year and a half ago and thought it was fantastic, however whn i found out they were doing a film of it, i had my doubts. i've seen the trailer and can't make any presumptions from it. i really hope it's good but it's such an easy format to fuck up...

...anyone who was a teenager should read the book though.

Just saw a preview of this, and I really liked it. Not completely faithful to the book; fans of which may be angry about the changes, but they captured the spirit of it well. Plenty of laughs, although a bit heavy on the cheese, especially at the end. 3/5
