 Mine updated today.

Internet explorer's pretty good. Annoyed by the lack of flash but not a surprise. The immature person in me went straight to the porn version of youtube to see if that work and it does so assuming YouTube does too

Free month trial for xbox music too, seems a bit slow at the moment but could be teething problems

No update for me yet - although (very off-topic) I have just pre-ordered a Surface RT so I'll hopefully be able to use that and the Smartglass app with the new Xbox Dashboard

Well the Dashboard update rolled out yesterday for me.

Really like the new tweaks to the interface. Its what the last dashboard update should have been. Still miss the Inside Xbox lot though, really good they were.

IE is actually pretty good - although it is quite slow at times to load full pages - which surprised me. Using the chatpad is a must and its actually a pretty handy thing to have on the big screen. Its obviously not going to replace your laptop/PC/tablet but its handy to have.

Yep! or ipads etc i think from what i read though its not going to be avaliable till "early 2013" the apps that is. At least for IOS anyway. i think the Windows tablets and maybe windows phones can use it from the 26 October if my memory serves me right...

Through the 360's dashboard on the main page. 3 times running now I've signed up for 2 months for £2, turned off auto renewal and then I get offered it again on the day my sub runs out. Not sure on Smartglass myself, nice for text input I guess (which I barely ever do), but it's largely pointless for me otherwise if I'm honest.

That said Windows 8 is quite nice, fast as well.

Still waiting for the SmartGlass iOS app.

Unfortunately MS have behaved like arseholes with this SmartGlass launch.

Originally it was announced that it was a service that would provide WiiU like features and added gameplay options via a second screen on devices we already own, such as Android phones and tablets, iOS devices and of course Windows devices, rather than buying an expensive proprietary device.

Then shortly before the release, as late as this week, saying it would be available on the 26th, and still no mention of their intention to make it Windows device exclusive till 2013.

Then rumours start leaking, people start getting pissed off with Microsoft, but still no official word. Then finally the release day rolls round and iOS and Android just get a coming soon line, and nothing else.

Admittedly the Android release has since surfaced, although it would appear this was a kneejerk reaction by MS to consumer response to their awful idea of making it Windows exclusive for a few months. This feature is an Xbox seller, not a phone or tablet seller, no-one is going to sell their existing device and buy a Windows one because they can get SmartGlass on it for a few months before their existing devices. And no amount of console interactivity on a tablet would surely persuade someone to buy those ridiculously priced Surface tablets, £107 for a case? Jog on Bill.


I understand MS have just launched a new product line that they want to sell, but thank heavens it appears common sense finally prevailed, though their silence on the iOS app is still a rather poor showing.

Fortunately my copy of Forza Horizons has yet to arrive so there's little benefit to me having a SmartGlass app at the moment so the actual missing out of the app isn't bothering me, I just wish MS would be a little more transparent at times.


I also pray for those who have dared to purchase a Surface tablet that the platform is supported better than the god awful WP7/WP7.5 platform, and the same can be said for WP8. Such a good idea and UI, the best mobile UI out there, but support is lacking from MS and as a more concerning result third parties. Apps are few and far between, and updates and support for apps that do exist are even fewer in numbers. Also the terrible web browser on WP7.5 has to have been improved.

Unfortunately Microsoft have developed it in a bit of a backwards fashion, perhaps there's logic to it or something relating to hardware restrictions. But instead of just using your local network to connect your devices to your Xbox and vice versa, MS have chosen to do it via the internet, so you device and the xbox, both talk over the internet to the xbox servers and then back to each other, so I doubt syncing will ever be as quick as it could/should be.

I've owned a Lumia and used an HTC Radar with WP7.5 on for a few months, and my experience was as I said earlier, that the actual concept behind it, the actually user interface, the live tiles etc were solid and better than any other smartphone UI out there.

However, the platform is missing so many features that are considered basic on other platforms (e.g. screenshots) and more importantly for me, just like consoles, the main pull of a phone once you're satisfied with the hardware is the software available for it, and this is where WP7/7.5 falls short. MS just haven't supported it enough themselves, and third party support as a result is lacking, the selection of apps is so minimal compared to other platforms, and the general quality of what is available is for the most part below what the other platforms have to offer.

My biggest gripe was also Internet Explorer on WP was just awful so many sites refused to load or worked incorrectly, and as a result of the above issue there wasn't a plethora of alternatives to try instead to solve this.

Maybe WP8 will address a lot of this, but they really need to get the third parties on board for it to ever become a viable option.

 I'm needing to get a new play & charge kit, are the third party kits any good? Official ones are like 3 times the price on Ebay so I was wondering if the others are worth a punt?

Also, has anyone had any experience making custom joypads? I've half thought about fucking about with colour schemes and stuff and it looks pretty easy. The only bit I think would be tricky is soldering LEDs as I have never soldered a thing in my life. How hard is it?

They're okay. The charge doesn't last as long as the official ones, but they're decent enough and a fraction of the price of the Microsoft battery packs.
