I'll second that raspberry. As soon as the lengthy interview portion of the magazine vanishes then i will be depressed.
As for the even longer reviews, not a fan, i dont need a 3 page review of a film. I just need a basic review to either spark my interest or put me off the film. But this is the wrong forum thread for this chat so i will just say
Bring Back The DVD Club

For me there's no question. The Dead Zone hands-down beats Shawshank, The Shining, Carrie (even Lawnmower Man) as the best Stephen King story ever put to film. Actually, I suppose Cronenburg is the cinema equivelant of Stephen King in that he puts normal, real people in unbelivable circumstances. That's what horror should be about.

Also, I thought A History Of Violence was amazing. People criticised it for being slow, but that was the whole point. Cronenburg set a very lazy, suburban-quiet feel to the film which was then shattered by those flashes of brutality. Seriously, the scene outside his house was near unwatchable; usually Cronenburg is unwatchable because of the gore, but this was an unbearably tense scene where a man and his family are being threatened on their own doorstep. What a film.

Cronenberg strikes me as a director who can't believe his good fortune that people enjoy his films. Polite, quiet and genial (outside of a divorce case), one would almost suspect, what with the content of the vast majority of his films, that it's a clever facade to defuse criticism of the 'sickness' of his more extreme body horror moments.
Also, cheers to Mr. Cronenberg for scaring the bejaysus out of my father with Shivers back in the 70's. He still refuses to watch a film if he hears that it's made by the same man who made Shivers. It's a great way to get control of the remote.

Actually yeah, why wasn't it in the magazine this month. I didn't even notice. There are so many cool people they haven't got to yet. Spielberg, James Cameron, David Lean, Terry Gilliam, etc.....

Everyone? WHAT DO WE WANT? WHEN DO WE WANT IT?

Big fan of Cronenberg, I love nearly all the films I've seen of his.
Scanners, Videodrome, The Fly and A History of Violence are my personal favourites. I didn't really like Crash that much, but hey, everybody's different!!!

A History of Violence was very good, sort of different from his other films though.  I thought Crash was disturbing yet a work of art.  I admire him because he had the balls to make that kind of film, but he still managed to contain his intelligent commentary that runs through his films, that humans are twisted by illness, machinery etc.

Scanners is awesome.  It annoys me that it's being remade !  Videodrome just makes you untrustworthy of your television!

It's being helmed by Darren Lynn Bousman, who also directed Saws II and III, as well as the upcoming Saw IV.

Cronenberg should have directed the sequels to Scanners, instead of something directed by a nobody starring nobodies.  Scanners 2 and 3 look like straight-to-video trash.

Got Scanners on it's way too me from good ol' Amazon. Are the sequels worth watching?
I really like the Fly. That's the first horror film i remember most of, and I must have been 4 yr old or something.

You gotz to see Videodrome. It is a horror classic. James Woods is outstanding. Also has a bizarre downbeat ending.

I've seen all of Cronenberg's movies and have loved them all.At least he gives you something to think about after his films.I remember when Crash was banned from the local cinema. That only hypes people up to see it more.Great movie with the darkest characters I've seen.

There are so many things about Cronenberg that make him a genius. I find that his demeanor is unsettling in that he looks like a mild mannered lecturer but deep inside he has so much violence (much like A History of Violence). I see Dead Ringers as a companion piece to Peter Greenaway's A Zed and Two Noughts, much like Existenz is a companion piece to Videodrome (both commenting on 2 types of media that go hand in hand like tv and gaming).
But his best period will always be the 1980's when he took ideas from disease and decay and made them beautiful

I think the wonderful thing about Cronenberg is that he has remained consistently brilliant througout his career

Here, here!!
I had my own reservasions about watching Videodrome ages ago. But it really is fantastic.
Slightly dated FX-wise but hey, it was made a while ago. It's part of it's 80's charm.
James Woods is at his best, and a really incredibley brave performance by the understated Debbie Harry.
It has some really incredible shots that stay with you.
He really creates a believable modern futuristic world brilliantly with very little tricks used.

On another note I personally feel that Eastern Promises is one of the best films of the decade.
Such a gem, in my opinion, with outstanding perfomances by a brilliantly assembled and directed cast.

Peace.

I watched Eastern Promises today and I thought that it was an okay film I think The Fly has to be Cronenberg's best out of the movies I've already seen, I still need to watch Crash and Videodrome, A History of Violence was nothing special and whilst Viggo Mortensen does an amazing job of portraying a Russian sometimes you forget that he isnt.
The best scene has to be fight in the sauna with Mortensen nude, Eastern Promises was a good time pass but again nothing special the movie just didnt seem to satisfy at the end and I expected there to be probably more.

3/5 - A good movie, with lots of action and great style, but really a must for all Cronenberg fans.
