As it was Sondheim sanctioned, it does give the movie soundtrack an air of "officiality", if that isn't a word I've just made up.

Sweeney Todd did remind me a bit of Moulin Rouge.  None of the actors involved are natural singers, but they certainly give it their best shot!

Maybe given that cinema can offer close ups, and avoids the need to belt out even the quiet songs, maybe this allows for more emotion to attach to the songs.

I think you're probably right there. The film songs do have a softer tone to them at times, maybe that is why.

I was given the Sweeney Todd Highlights cd for Christmas and loved it but then realised that not all the movie tracks were on it.
So today the Amazon lady has just arrived with the full soundtrack and I am listening to it now. She also brought the book which is beautifully produced and I am going to enjoy reading it from cover to cover.

Ooh I've just realised there is talking from the movie too on this one! Fabulous!

For someone who didn't like musicals and gore I seem to have gone overboard on this movie! The theatre where I work is showing it for three nights in March so I shall get to see it on the big screen again

Bought the Run Lola Run soundtrack mainly for Franka Potente's two songs.

I finally got around to getting a copy of the Akira soundtrack. Not exactly easy listening but worth the effort. There's only two tracks that I skip, too much weird shouting, the rest is great.

Indeed, top notch! (edit: referring to Firefly by Edmonson; I overestimated the 'reply'button) Way better than the Serenity one (also enjoyable though). And you've got to love the theme-song!

I bought Stardust and A history of Violence. History good but not special, but Stardust: great! Really enjoyable and not afraid to say that he's knicked some tunes from the old masters.

Possible one of the best soundtracks ever I loved all the songs on here...old school rock plus Ellen's end song is awesome

Aye, Stardust is fantastic, Love some of the tracks on there. I also like the A History of Violence score, though I remember from watching the film that there was one bit that had music just like some of the Isengard/Uruk-Hai music from Lord Of the Rings. Not sure if it made it onto the CD though.

The Pan's Labyrinth soundtrack is really beautiful as there are a few sad tunes in there which help make the film dark and beautiful at the same time

(listening intently ;-)

There is some reference to these themes in the tracks 'Diner' and 'Run', but they are more like the bridge/prelude(or what you call) to the actual Uruk-hai running. I'll have to see the film again if there's more, but I doubt it. The rest of the soundtrack (especially the latter half) is more derivative of his Silence of the Lambs work than LOTR.

I don't have the soundtrack with me at the moment, but I've just checked that scene in the film again, about 32 minutes in and I swearm, without looking at the images I'd think  was back in Middle Earth.  It's actually more of a generic piece of music than anything fully LOTR associated, but it does have some Uruk-Hai/Amon Hen style to it.

Next time I listen to the soundtrack I'll pay more attention, but I can remember the Lambs similarities.

I did, and yes it's the tune from 'Diner' if I'm not mistaken. Check it out and compare it to Uruk-ha, just before they really begin running (I guess, need to see the movie again)
