Thoughts? Have to say I'd go with 5 strikers. Good for Parker, think he deserves it, although Nolan must be despairing now. Why have Jenas there I don't know.

Well I don't know what Jenas has done and why oh why is Defoe still in there? If he plays over Crouch or especially Johnson I will start to worry about McClarens mental state. My starting 11 from that lot would be:-
                                              Robinson
   Neville                  Ferdinand            Terry                  Cole
                                         Carrick/Parker
                    Gerrard              Lampard          Richardson
                                        Rooney
                                              Johnson

Carrick over Parker because IMHO Macedonia shouldn't really require us to need an out and out ball winner. We should have the majority of the ball and if we are to win the game we need to make the most of it. Carrick gives us this over Parker who I might consider for the Croatia game as a more defensive option.

in all honesty I think with Venables in the background England will go 3-5-2 eventually when everyone is fit.

Not sure if it suggests that McClaren isn't that confident of himself and wants the experience to fall back on, or is more of a PR stunt.

Whichever, it makes a mockery of the claim that England were going to install a system where the present manager would train his replacement, a new upcoming coach, doesn't it?

Nope I thought it would be the logical move.  I posted at the time of appointment that I thought he would bring in Venables.

Actually looking at SKY SPORTS NEWS it seems three is a charm.

1.) Hargreaves having a good world cup
2.) Venables becoming No2
3.) England going to 3-5-2.

 Wouldnt agree with a 3-5-2 personally. You were right, but having the same mind as Steve Mc is something I'd keep to myself.....

Hey I fought for Owen all along, have always rated the guy!

As for Venners, can't agree, I like him, but really, asst manager? Seems an odd move to me, but hey, so was appointing Stevie Mc!

To be honest I thought they would use the 3-5-2 as a cop out for dropping Lampard. It allows both Lampard and Gerrard to play in the middle although it does mean the right winger can't be Lennon he isn't defensive enough. I would also expect Neville to be dropped in time to make way for another true centre back which is a shame as he rarely gets the credit he deserves.

Venables made sense to me as I think it was a Trevor idea putting an experienced man next to McClaren to face the media if the going gets tough. Also Venners for all his critics has always been very progressive in terms of formation etc. The old Christmas formation isn't to far away from the 4-3-3, 4-5-1  that Jose was hailed for 2 years ago. (I know he didn't invent it but he was the first EPL manager to deploy it)  El Tel was looking at a single striker for the England team with two support players in 1995/6 over ten years ago.

With Hargreaves it was obvious he couldn't be as bad a he looked. He was never played in a regular position and never in his club position. It was a bit of a no brainer that a young lad at Bayern who played as a holding player, an area where we were short, wouldn't shut a few people up if played in his proper position.

Knowing me as long as you have Nath I thought you would of spotted when I was fishing. I just thought I point out a few things seeing as I seem to get so much stick . I was actually expecting Pablo or Walter to come and break my balls. Maybe even Jiminy who did disapears into the ether but has now returned only to go again. Fancy that rather an appropriate name eh

Also as a disclaimer I was picking from that squad. I wouldn't have Richardson as a starter either but what choice was there and I didn't think they would go 3-5-2 in this game. I thought they would wait until everyone was fit.
SWP on the left was an idea I thought of but he would be coming inside, with Gerrard also coming inside on the right were would our width be?

Isn't Johnson injured? Barry's a decent player, I'd have no problem with him being in an England squad if I gave a fuck - the parallels between him and Thompson are getting ridiculous, though.

I can kind of see why people might argue for the inclusion of Defoe and Dowing. I wouldn't agree with them, but I may see their point. But seriously, can ANYONE explain why Jenas is there match after match? He must tell a fucking good joke. Nolan or Reo-Coker should be taking up his place.

Shame if Barry misses out through injury and I made my point about Etherington in another thread. Would have taken Walcott over Defoe too.

Agrtred, Jenus is pretty much the most pointless footballer in the Premiership - he couldn't tackle a bag of cement or finish his dinner, therefor I don't see how he can be considered either a defensive or attacking midfielder. He is, frankly, rubbish. You might be pushing it wit Reo-Coker, though, I don't see what the fuss is about him when West Ham are playing well, let alone what they're up to at the minute.

For an idea of how this game is going to go, I refer you to Arsenal's resounding victory over Liverpool on Sunday.

Anything less from the Dutch at home against a toothless England will be down to Holland not being bothered.

If it wasn't for all the injuries reported prior to the squad joining up, I would have put Gerrard on the bench. Can't wait until Hargreaves comes back. In the last 6 or so games he is the only Englishman to show any passion for wearing the shirt. And he's Canadian!

Hmm, but can you see McClaren dropping either Lampard or Gerrard to accommodate Hargreaves? Of course he could always put Gerrard on the right, but this would mean leaving Lennon on the bench, after he's already pretty much stated that Lennon will be the long term replacement for Beckham on the right wing. To be honest, I'm not really that bothered about the scoreline tonight. I don't even know if I'll watch it. I guess it might be worth it as long as the Dutch play some good football.

Giving Richards a go at right back in a Friendly is a good idea although the inclusion of Gerrard and Joe Cole might be a bit of a worry.  It seems as if we are going to play rather akin to Chelsea with a tight four in midfield and getting width from our full backs. From watching Richards this does suit his game but it puts a lot on the lad making his debut.
Personally I would have dropped Gerrard on the right for SWP. Gerrard is out of form and suspended for the next competative game anyway so this is little point playing him. Lampard is looking back to his best so for the first time ever I would actually pick Fat Frank over Stevie G.
If Lennon was fit I'd of played him but SWP deserves a chance even though he isn't playing at Chelsea.

I thought the Dutch played 4-3-3/4-5-1 with Robben and Van Perise wide like Chelsea last season?

I could be wrong though.  

As for Huddlestone I was championing last year and thought he may of been given more of a chance at Spurs. Zakora (sp) seems to have put pay to that, plus there must be players who are getting regular games who deserve it more at the minute.
