 I've seen series 1-3. They are good fun, They are not really serious dramas and I found watching series 2 (the one I started with) on TV a tad frustrating, as it takes just under half a year to get through a single day in his life. I much prefer watching them on DVD and have just found that to be more rewarding as a way to watch it, or maybe I'm just impatient. Either way, yes... they are worth checking out if you want a bit of well made fun, or at least series 1-3. Not sure about rewatchability though, I don't think I'd ever buy them. Might be worth a rent, or borrowing off a friend who has them...

 My '24' virginity has been taken. The Mrs bought me the first season for Christmas and I've watched the first half of it so far........WOW!  Jack is the man!

Season One is a little strange though no? I'm halfway through but it seems like the end of the season, he's rescued Terri and Kim and foiled the assination plot, I'm guessing the Plan B thing is about to come into full effect!

 I'm currently watching Band of Brothers on Blu-ray. I'm ashamed to say - as a man - that I've never watched it before. Well that's not entirely true, I did watch the first episode (and possibly the second, I can't remember) when it was first broadcast but for some reason I didn't carry on. I think I went on holiday or something. So now after all these years I'm finally getting round to watching it! Go me!

By the by, does anybody know of any good books on World War II? Nothing specific to individual battles or operations but a sort of overview of the whole shebang. Nothing fictionalised either but nothing dry and boring like a textbook. My WWII history is pretty non-existant so I'd like to read something more general before going to read about different battles and operations specifically. Does such a book exist?

I'm sure there must be. I'm kinda in the same boat as you, been trying to brush up on my history lately. I found a decent one for WW1 which was a fairly simplistic overview so I could do with a similar one for WW2.

Cannot recommmend a book but if you can afford it I'd go for The World At War - Complete TV Series (11 Disc Box Set) [DVD]. Here is the link:-

 To be honest, you're more likely to get a better insight into WW2 if you but separate books regarding various parts of the war. But for one volume editions, this one is pretty good: http://www.amazon.com/World-Arms-Global-History-War/dp/0521618266/ref=cm_cr_pr_sims_t (can be rather dry though). I really like Martin Gilbert's one-volume histories of WWI and WWII ( HERE and HERE respectively) and they're a better choice to start with than Weinberg's book, though some of the reviews on Amazon mention occasional factual errors so it's worth taking a look to be sure.

I'd suggest John Keegan's books - the WW1 book as well.

Or be up to date with a current view with the recently released Storm of War by Andrew Roberts, generally very well reviewed.

 I have a DVD boxset called Century of Warfare (Link) that I got dirt cheap thanks to this thread a few years ago. It was a new listing on some website and they put the price at £7.99 or something. So I bagged it. Shamefully I haven't watched it yet. I may start it after BoB and Saving Private Ryan.
