Listed from the most recent to furthest away. Each with a little comment. Not classing films I've seen before. These were virgin films for me. 1. Venus - Really enjoyed it, perhaps a bit high brow for mainstream. But O'Toole is excellent as always, and the closing scene is fantastic. 2. My Own Private Idaho - Really glad I got round to watching it, typical style of it's era. But impressive and unexpected script work. River carried the part so well. 3. The Persuit of Happiness - Not a fan, bit of a waste of time really. Even though everyone else loved in. Just seemed to follow a basic cinematic formula, was very predictable and wasn't really bothered about the characters. (I know it's based on real life) 4. Smokin' Aces - Was so surprised to enjoy this, hadn't expected much. But had the odd fit man, Alicia Keys was surprisingly good, and had a whole Slevin/Kill Bill style thing going on. End was a bit crap though. 5. The Last King of Scotland - Excellent acting, and genuinely great build of tension throughout the plot. Really wish McAvoy would do more work. 6. Shortbus - One of the best films I've seen ever! Amazingly well acted, an outstanding soundtrack and really beautiful. The unsimulated sex is tastefully done, and the film focuses on emotions that most people carry with them at some point. Left the cinema really happy. Straight into my top 3 films ever. (along with Amelie and Pan's Labyrinth) Everyone really should make a huge effort to see this work of pure collective genius. 7. The Jacket - Forced to watch this by a girl at work. Was good, Brody a bit typical, but Knightley was a real surprise, breaking away from her usual 'British Posh Voice' thing. 8. Apocalypto - So much better than that trash 'Passion...' well shot and well acted, without being preachy as you'd expect from Mel Gibson. Though the body art was wildly inaccurate thoughout the majority of the film. 9. Miss Potter - Renee Zellweger really is becomming and honorary Brit, move over Gwynnie. This was a lovely little film, nothing special, but not appaling. A good, sunday afternoon or sick day film. 10. Perfume - Outstanding! Had reservations beforehand. Really well done, the visual imagary works so well to help you imagine the aromas. Though bizarre in places (especially towards the end) and a buit guesome, it was very sexy and beautiful.
