54. Cloud Atlas (Tom Tykwer / Andy Wachowski / Lana Wachowski, 2012) GER/USA/HK/SNG

Oh thank God, I was feeling so alone.

I''m not sure I trust it. Stoker, Hansel and Gretel & Robot and Frank being below Soderbergh's SPOILER film that is really like another film is a bit worrying

SPOILERS!

I really enjoyed Side Effects and I can’t stand Jude Law, Rooney Mara or Catherine Zeta Jones. I didn’t like the evil lesbian moment but I still got much more than I expected. It helped I knew sod all about the film going in and I’ve not seen Malice. Stoker looked better than the film as a whole, the direction is brilliant and I quite liked OBVIOUS PSYCHOPATH Goode but it wasn’t as awesome as I maybe wanted. Hansel and Gretel was again a very good experience but on reflection it didn’t completely work for me. I adored Robot and Frank BUT I think the ending scuppered the film; the twist didn’t work and almost ruined much of what had gone on before luckily Frank Langella is superb. As for Atlas it didn’t half go on and on and on and on…

SPOILERS FOR STOKERS and ROBOT AND FRANK

I was just talking about that part of Robot and Frank last night. The emotional part of it worked, I think, because we'd engaged so much with the lead - but plotwise it was a bit of a stretch, I though. My favourite bit was probably Marsdean's look of utter resignation on the stairs when it doesn't go boom!

I thought, maybe wrongly, that Park was playing up the obviousness of Goode's character (I don't understand anyone who sees it as a twist in any way) to meet Hitch's persistent idea that it doesn't matter if you know the bad guy is the bad guy because it only adds to the suspense of when things are going to go utterly tits up. So it got to overplay in line with the southern gothic overthetopic setting.

Atlas - I don't remember liking the book that much and I hadn't really read anything about the film (apart from the western characters make-up for some parts) so I got a bit confused when it started rapidly cutting between the stories given I thought one of key parts of the book was supposed to be moving through then back through the stories. Also, and this might just be me completely misremembering in which case it's a dumb point - but it said it all for me when they didn't trust the audience to know where they were at the end and had a kid say 'point it out dad' - in the books it's multiple moons or something that you'd think would have been obvious enough. The odd nice performance though. Never from a Hanks (sadly) or a Berry (inevitable).

Edit - I've moved my spoiler from above now and feel a bit rotten - I thought I'd be safe saying it when someone had seen Side Effects, but now it seems it is basically part spoiling the other film if they haven't seen it.

SPOILERS FOR STOKER and ROBOT AND FRANK

Yes Marsden’s look is brilliant. The emotional punch was fine but then I thought about it and it niggled a little too much.

Are there people who think Goode’s character is anything but a murderous fruit loop? I agree with you that the obvious bad guy doesn’t matter and I enjoyed those parts of the film a lot the anticipation of something bad about to happen is an oddly satisfying thing. I like Stoker but I believe I expected more and yet I’m eager to go back to it again because I do think it’s a film I would personally enjoy more and more on repeat viewings.

Also I can’t be the only one who kept getting Thriller – A Cruel Picture vibes from Mia Wasikowska?

I liked Ben Whishaw and the Cavendish segments but I was thoroughly uninterested very quickly and though the length of the film isn’t the greatest it felt like a grind for the most part. Hanks and Berry were equally ludicrous.

Interestingly high for The Maid. Those views will have helped with the female noms I think? Certainly, for me, Tokyo Sonata.

The Maid was a surprise, I thought I knew what I was getting but I got far more than expected. I loved Catalina Saavedra performance and thourghly enjoyed the film. Tokyo Sonata is probably the better film (and it is superb) and Teruyuki Kagawa, Kai Inowaki and Kyōko Koizumi were all very good and I loved the ending but on initial viewing The Maid edged it by 0.01%. I’m looking forward to watching both again and will be getting the Masters of Cinema blu ray of Sonata.

Kurosawa's TV series stars Koizumi (and also has Kagawa). I thought it was very good - it's on that place I showed you.
