Just recently saw Clint Eastwood's Iwo Jima Letters/Flags diptych - good stuff, although I can't help feeling that the American POV was hindered by some odd structural choices. Still both quality though, haven't seen alot on the Pacific side of the war myself, apart from maybe Hell in the... which is obviously a classic

Saw The Thin Red Line today for the first time - a phenomenal achievement.

Just utterly, utterly brilliant. It's actually gone straight to the top of my favourite war films off all time list, and it's in the top 10 of my favourite films of all time.

Imagine a war film boasting a cast containing Billy Zane, Sean Pertwee, Nick Moran, Alex Skarsgard, Rafe Spall, Laurence Fox, Michael Madsen, Jack Dee (?!) AND David Ginola! Well, it's not idle fantasy, for I have found it.

While browsing my local DVD/Game Exchange, my eye fell upon The Last Drop which, from the description, sounds like a remake of Kelly's Heroes.

In a daring attempt to end the war by Christmas, Winston Churchill and the British High Command hatch an extraordinary plan - Operation Market Garden. 35,000 British troops are dropped behind enemy lines in German occupied Holland. In the midst of the largest airborne invasion in history, one small unit of men, codename "Matchbox" has it's own agenda. When Matchbox are shot down short of their landing zone, the odds of their success seem hopeless. Seven very different British soldiers find themselves separated from the Allied invasion, on a collision course with three renegade German soldiers who also want to lay claim to the horde.

I'll let you know how awful/awesome it is....

*Not a lot of actual war depicted, but still a war film in my books. The Deer Hunter deals with the effects of war, and how it scars a person for life, not only physically, but mentally,

If you like aviation war films, they're a must-see. The Dawn Patrol might be a bit hard to get, mind, but well worth it. I've still not seen the original 1930 version, but given the Errol Flynn/David Niven 1938 version is a pure remake of it, it should be just as good.

Full Metal Jacket is one of my personally favourite Kubrick films. But did you guys know what EMPIRE Gave it 3 stars? 3 measily stars for an absolute classic! I never get bored with it! In fact i'm going to watch it right now!

Black Hawk Down was good, but I don't really remember much about it.

As much as I dislike Apocalypse Now!, there's always the helicopter attack sequence...!

Platoon. Charlie Sheen before he was winning, Willem Defoe, Tom Berenger, Forest Whitaker, Adagio for Strings, Johnny Depp getting killed.

I haven't seen Three Kings in years, but I remember it being very good indeed.

In a fit of nostalgia, last year I bought the Platoon and Hamburger Hill Special Editions. I loved both movies in the 80s, the stuff that table-top RPGs were made of (yes, I know that's a pathetic admission).

On viewing again as a non-table-top RPG playing 40 year old I was stunned by the difference in quality of the movies. Platoon was still just brilliant on every level, where as Hamburger Hill was - mostly - toe curlingly bad. Poor dialogue, heavy handed racial themes and - I hate to say - some really bad acting.

Rose tinted specs were forever smashed...

Erm, i've yet to watch Beefburger Hill...sorry Hamburger! I've seen it stocked in my local Sainsbury's stores for the past couple of months. But I always get the feeling it might be a waste of money! That said, i'll borrow from a mate or something. That way, if it is poor like you say, I wont regret buying it!

Platoon is great, apart from Sheen. He just isn't up to the performance that role requires.

Platoon is great, apart from Sheen. He just isn't up to the performance that role requires.

I too at first thought Sheen was maybe miscast. But on further viewings over the years I thought he wasn't that bad! Oliver Stone saw Sheen's character as representing himself. Stone came from a middle-class background and against his parents wishes flew off to fight in Vietnam. I think thats why you feel his character is out of place. Because he is not like the rest of his platoon!

Is the Killing Fields classed as a war film? I mean there's not any depictions of marines/ soldiers fighting but it does depict the insanity of war? And is related to Vietnam? It is a harrowing, heartfelt picture nonetheless!

Also, if this was a 'fantasy war film' list, then for me RAMBO And ALIENS would top it!

So, let's talk about the surrendering Soviets...

Has anyone seen this? It's a rather spectacular (the Soviets sure knew how to blow up shit) and its completely compelling throughout it's two hour and a half running time, dealing with a Soviet platoon fighting a rearguard action during the German drive on Stalingrad. Also directed by Sergie "I helmed the most expensive film of all time which has battles which make all other war films look like child's play" Bondarchuck.

I'm also asking if this film is any good...

Also known as Fortress orf War, dealing with the Nazi siege of the Brest Fortress.

Apocalypse Now is still the best War movie ever for me, closely followed by The Thin Red Line. After that, Downfall, Platoon and Full Metal Jacket are the best of the bunch imo. Cross Of Iron is also a great film. There's a bunch I've not seen yet like All Quiet On The Western Front, Das Boot and Eastwood's offerings to the genre.

Not sure if Schindler's List counts, but I love that film.

I watched Army Of Shadows recently. Think it counts as a war film, has no actual scenes of war, but it's about the early days of the French Resistance in German occupied France. Truly brilliant film it is.
