                Robinson

Neville       Brown        Terry         Cole

                   Hargreaves
Lennon                      Gerrard             Downing

                   Ashton
                                Defoe

Seems like the most likely starting XI although it's a friendly so there'll be lots of changes throughout the match.

Carragher, yes. But he'll want to have a look at Dawson, you always dish out a few first caps for your first game in charge.

Maybe so, but your key priority for your first game in charge is to get a win, so any new names, he'll more than likely bring on as substitutes.

I think Dawson is much better and more reliable than Brown, anyway.

Jermaine Jenas? FFS!!
I thought that one was another of Sven's inept selections but apparently Steve thinks he can actually play as well! I've yet to meet a Newcastle or Spurs fan who thinks he's anything above average and how you can have him in the squad ahead of Reo-Coker, Nolan, Parker is just retearded.

I think most people think he looked a good player 3-4 years ago but he's been blighted by injury. If he stays fully fit and gets some regular football I think he's a definate squad player as he can play anywhere in the back four.

Was the entire of the 05/06 season not enough regular football? He was United's best defender/player all season, and I'd happily choose him over Ferdinand for the centre back roll alongside Terry.

I didn't realise he'd played that many games last season. Then again, I did have other things on my mind, being a Sunderland supporter.

If that's the case Carragher will play ahead of Brown.

I agree with the sentiment - he played particularly well for United last season, but I've got this nagging thought in my mind that Fergie happened to play Silvestre more than Brown in his more natural centre-back position. If that was the case then he does need more regular football before being picked against defender's that are playing regularly at centre-back. Including Dawson.

Will you reply to this post then?

Brown's good but i'd have Carragher ahead of him. Brown is much better at right back though so it's good to have him in the squad, although when everyone's fit i imagine he'll be 5th choice centre back.

Why is Bent in the squad after he was put in the under-21s? I want him in the squad but what's the point in being put in the under-21s and the told you're in the seniors? Has someone got injured who was going to be in the squad?

I think Brown is a very good player but he's failed to realise his initial potential and, whilst certainly not old, time is running out for him to do this. Dawson could be a bit special and deserves the backing of the management.

I'd back Dawson and Terry to be the number one partnership by the next World Cup but I don't think McClaren will look beyond Rio for the immediate future.

Ahhh, but I think Rio is better than Terry. Dawson will be third choice, but might be pushing Terry for the World Cup - I think you guys might have another "is he just playing because he's captain?" situation on your hands, whereas Gerrard is assured of his place for many years. But maybe that's a bit premature.

So the squad is:

Goalkeepers:
Robinson (Tottenham)
Kirkland (Liverpool)
Foster (Man Utd)

Defenders:
Bridge (Chelsea)
Brown (Man Utd)
Carragher (Liverpool)
A Cole (Arsenal)
Dawson (Tottenham)
Ferdinand (Man Utd), G Neville (Man Utd)
P Neville (Everton)
Terry (capt, Chelsea)
Young (Charlton)

Midfielders:
Downing (Middlesbrough)
Gerrard (Liverpool)
Hargreaves (Bayern Munich)
Jenas (Tottenham)
Lampard (Chelsea)
Lennon (Tottenham)
Richardson (Man Utd)
Wright-Phillips (Chelsea)

Strikers:
Ashton (West Ham)
Bent (Charlton)
Crouch (Liverpool)
Defoe (Tottenham)

Good to see Brown, Dawson and Bent there even the the strikeforce isn't particularly mouth-watering.

Why is Jenas there though? It boggles the mind why Nolan isn't included. Am I the only one who thinks he should be given an opportunity?

Nolan's been a great asset to Bolton for the last three or so years and I'm still surprised he's never got a look in. Still, he's only 24 (I think) so it's not a missed opportunity yet. Still bemused by the lack of Scott Parker when the likes of Jenas and Richardson are called up.

Nope. I've already made my feelings clear on the subject. Jenas is an average Premiership player and shouldn't be anywhere near the national team.
On another topic, I wonder whether Gareth Barry might finally get a look in again after Sven never picked him in a single squad. I rate him above Bridge at left-back and he can also play left-midfield very effectively.

I'm actually quite surprised Barry wasn't named, that would be a proper fuck-you to Sven, which is effectively what Mac's done to a lesser extent with Defoe being called up and Becks' ommission. Jenus is random, doesn't defend (or attack) as well as Parker, doesn't attack as well as Nolan, doesn't defend as well as Butt.

Wasn't the reason for Nolan not being in the England squad during Sven's time because he was not at a big club and away from London?

I don't think Beckham deserves the abuse he gets but I do think his time had come to drop out of the England fold. He was never one to beat an opponent but the World Cup just highlighted his decline even further. He just wasn't working the line like he used to and his presence affected the shape and tactics of the side.  I just wish he McClaren had told Beckham that he was no part of his plans so that he could have at least had the chance to announce his retirement rather than have to go through all this tiresome "Goldenballs Dropped" rigmarole.

Still, it lets McLaren show the press that he is willing to make the big decisions. Lets just see if he persists with Gerrard and Lampard together in the 4-4-2 then I might bewlieve it's true. Until then I think the "Mac The Knife" reputation is a little premature.

Hopefully though the rejection of being dropped and fulfilling a century of caps might drive Beckham to put in some inspired performances at Madrid and fight tooth and nail to get back in the squad, or maybe he'll just hit the tall wall of depression and not bother.

His performances for Madrid aren't the issue, he was excellent last season. It's the fact that every time he pulled on an England shirt under Eriksson he refused to do his job - get some fucking chalk on his boots and feed the strikers.

Agreed, he was Madrid's best player last year by a country-mile. While Becks has produced some good performances in recent years they haven't been when it's counted. He's been rubbish the last two Championships. Okay, so have the rest of the team, but he was the captain and should have drove the team forward and inspired them. Sadly, he just wasn't capable of that any more. Becks, you were the heartbeat of the team and our best player but your time's come and gone, thanks for the memories.

I've been calling for Beckham to be dropped out of the starting line-up for some time, but I was a bit shocked he was dropped from the squad entirely.
I can only guess that Jenas remains cos he makes a great cuppa or something, cos he sure as shit doesn't merit a place for any footballing reasons.
Am I alone in my belief that Terry tends to look a little bit suspect when he plays for England?

lol, and Ruud Van Nistelrooy has been dropped from the Dutch national squad, so F.U. Real Madrid!

I think Beckham deserves better though. I'm not saying that he should be a guaranteed starter, but he did make or score almost all of England's goals this World Cup. The problem was not Beckham, it was Sven.

Good on Mac. I'm not just happy because of Young and Bent being included but also because he is choosing the league's form players and showing he won't just go with big club names. I'm still in two minds about Becks being dropped but the squad looks young and fresh and that's a really different feeling. If they can be allowed to bond well over the next couple of years then there are high hopes for 2008.

I hope he plays Bent and Defoe up front next week as Crouch has had his share (good performances from him in the world cup but with Liverpool's champions league campaign and this being a friendly he should be on the bench). Bent has great aerial ability as well as his goalscoring talents while I feel him and Defoe can link up well.
