Some cool onset pics - http://gordonandthewhale.com/photos-from-the-set-of-george-lucas-red-tails/

But I just want to know when this is getting released.

Listening to the score for HBO's Tuskegee Airmen at work at the moment, this is some rousing stuff.

Very much looking forward to this. Hoping it'll be a little less sanctified than Tuskegee Airmen. HDSLR Guru Philip Bloom has been giving Lucas / someone advice and shooting Behind The Scenes footage. None of it featuring any actors of course.

I'm guessing it's in trouble, filming finished a long time ago and I doubt the aerial sequences require that amount of post production.

Lucas is probably busy adding CGI aliens to the ending.

This article http://www.blackfilm.com/read/2011/05/the-hit-list-cuba-gooding-jr-interview/ where Cuba Gooding Jr says the following;

"I’ve seen the movie, I’ve seen the special effects, and I can’t tell you how excited I am about that movie and for people to see it. In my career I’ve done a couple of movies that blown up the zeitgeist of cinema and hit social consciousness, like ‘Boyz N The Hood’ or ‘Men Of Honor’ or ‘Jerry Maguire.’ These are movies where people are affected by either a scenario or scene or environment they’ve never been exposed to, or it just hits them and in their everyday life they can identify with. We actors live for that, and we’ve done that again with George Lucas’ ‘Red Tails.’ The movie is breathtaking, and the thing about it is, visually you haven’t seen the things that George is doing with these fighter sequences. It’s insane. The real people we portray, like my character Major Emanuelle Stance. He took these young black men out of the schools of Tuskegee, Alabama and into the Air Force Base in Italy and turned them into warriors. You fall in love with not just the pilots but these men that helped them along their journey. Terrence Howard’s and my character were based on the exploits of Benjamin O. Davis who was the initiator of that whole Tuskegee experiment in putting together these fighter groups to join the efforts in World War II. I don’t want it to sound like it’s going to be a historical thing, which it is, but visually, I’m telling you, if you stay in your seat while you’re watching this movie I’ll be shocked. (laughs)"

Sounds pretty exciting.

The muscial score was recorded in Prague in June. Acclaimed jazz musician Terence Blanchard has written the score.

Anthony Hemmingway apparently confirmed on Twitter a couple of weeks ago that Red Tails will be released in January 2012 (presumably with initial screenings over Christmas?)

If that timetable is correct, Red Tails might be in line Oscar considerations?

I'm increasingly excited about this movie.

George will have his work cut out with this, ie convincing people he's made a movie worth seeing. I'm looking forward to the whizz bang lof the aerial sequences. I loved Flyboys.

Shit, I didn't even realise this was finished and awaiting release! Timon's link suggests it doesn't even have a distributor, if it can't even manage that with Lucas' clout, then it must be fucking shocking. I have to admit, I didnt even realise Lucas wasnt the director on this, I totally thought he was in the chair for this. If the trailer and footage looks good, I'll give it a shot, butw two years (nearly three) on the shelf and no distributor for a January release sounds like it's a fuck up.

Plus, I'm with DK, I loved Flyboys....

While I'm dying to see this, I'm not looking forward to the prospect of P-51s whizzing around like bloody X-Wings again - they did it for Pearl Harbor, they did it for Flyboys, they did it for The Red Baron.

What is so difficult about getting aerial physics correct?

It looks quite good, but not amazing yet. The special effects are as good as you'd expect from ILM though

I'll be seeing it when it comes out.

Looks alright, but is it me or do none of the dog fight sequences look particularly real?

Well as someone who has started this thread, has been waiting patiently for years and wrote an article for Den of Geek called Where The Hell is Red Tails? - I think it looks pretty good.

Looks very good to me.

I love how everyone **thinks** they know whats going on with Lucasfilm, like the comments up page about not being able to get a distributor and the movie "sitting on the shelf" when really nobody has the foggiest what Lucas is up to.

Glad it's not just me. A very ... hazy and oversaturated look to everything, not at all like real aerial footage would be. I thought this involved some actual fighter planes?

It did, but I'm guessing in that same way that Flyboys used some real (if only replica) WW1 aircraft...

Just watched the trailer - looked good. Looked very good actually. A cinema viewing to come by the looks of it.

I think the trailer looks great and I like reading that piece by Cuba Gooding Jr. It's nice when an actor involved with a project can articulate about what the film is about. Because then you get a real sense that they believed in what they were doing. I think this film is very important and has an important story to tell. A story about how a group of men, disregarded by their country, still fought for it anyway. Where they eventually won the respect and admiration of the bomber crews whom they protected.

One thing about one of the dogfight scenes. There's a shot of at least one P-51 Mustang chasing a Me-262. Now, the 262s were very fast of course, despite their various problems. I thought that the P-51 couldn't get that close to a Me-262 unless it was in a dive, for instance when the 262 would come in to land. The turning-arc of the Me-262 was very wide due to the speed at which it would travel. This allowed the Mustang to turn inside it and fire in front of it. Otherwise the Me-262 was untouchable.

Well he's got plenty of experience, given that he's filmed this story twice....

I'm guessing that the real-time flight physics of the '262/Mustang haven't been faithfully replicated, as a slow-moving target is nowhere near as thrilling as one going at "Mach 2 with your hair in fire".

Slightly off-topic, but I've still never found out for certain just who was the first to bring a '262 down - an RAF Spitfire, or a 332nd FG Mustang....

It doesn't matter that he's been a part of this story before. You could even say that he could've become bored of it by now. I just hate it when actors who speak about their role and film can't seem to articulate much about the story and their part in it. Which to me, comes across as insincere and that they just simply learned their lines of dialogue without becoming more invested in the story.

As for the dogfights with the Me-262s. I know how Hollywood works and what works more for dramatic effect. I just hope we don't see anything too far into the realm of fantasy. Given that "Red Tails" is a story based in fact and to some extent, it is a re-creation of history.

As for your question. Most likely the P-51 Mustang from possibly the 20th/357th/364th fighter group was the first aircraft to shoot down the Me-262.

You can read more here:

Wikipedia (click)

I think mach 2 is a tad too much.

It's hard to track down how much the original director was involved... but as the trailer seems to show actual sets and locations, it would seem to indicate quite a bit!

Hopefully ILM can make the battle sequences as exciting as the trailer. At the moment, I am extremely positive about the film.

The end of the original HBO movie still gives me goosebumps.

Trailer started with some undeniably impressive set pieces. But then Cuba Gooding Jr showed up and that guys just kills any project dead in its tracks for me. Then it just got progressively schmaltzy looking. By the end I was ready to call it... Pearl Harbour for a new generation .
