Die Nibelungen blu-ray review @ dvdbeaver (click)

quote:

BOTTOM LINE:
What can one say - this presentation is... unreal. This package should be an easy top-consideration for Blu-ray of the year. This is so much to Lang's film that you could probably watch it a dozen times and see deeper imagery each time. I thoroughly enjoyed this epic and the appreciate the included documentary and booklet for further education. Yes, we can easily endorse this as a highly important part of any digital library. It has our highest recomendation!

Is it me or is the grey washout a bit disappointing? The image with stronger contrast looks better. I hope TV setting will compensate.

The guys at MoC have really pushed the boat out with the JOAN release. It's shipping now if you've ordered it direct.

Don't trust dvdbeaver, it's well known his caps aren't taken correctly, and his reviews are frequently wrong or outright insane.

I'd wait for a reliable comparison site like www.caps-a-holic.com

There's some interesting discussion on this here -

For what it's worth, I think it looks fantastic in motion.

It's not totally unexpected though, I remember thinking the same thing when I first got the DVD of Le Silence de la Mer and some others have been surprisingly pale contrasts. I thought it was criterion that were the ones to favour the brighter = better philosophy, but then MoC started doing it more.

That link isn't working for me (neither is the website actually).

Yeah, Criterion are known for contrast boosting

Having taken a a look at a few scenes I can safely say my concerns over lack of contrast are totally dispelled. The DVDBeaver screen caps just made it seem like there was so little true black areas, something this film in particular thrives on. The Blu-ray looks superb, capturing the detail without compromising the black. Very pleased.

Watched it on saturday, first chance I got

Jeanne d'Arcs lidelse og død (The Passion of Joan of Arc)
Masters of Cinema has given Dreyer`s film a marvellous release. The film is made available in no less then 5 (!!!) different versions: two literally silent versions (so totally without sound), in 20 fps and 24 fps, the same versions but with newly composed soundtracks and the by Dreyer himself reviled Lo Duca versions.

This was the first time that I saw the film and so I chose to watch Dreyer`s personally prefered version: the 20 fps silent version.
You`d maybe suspect a very slow film: 97 minutes at only 20 frames per second (against the usual 24), but it didn`t feel long at all. From beginning to finish Dreyer`s camera work takes you right into the truly sad story of Jeanne D`Arc. Maria Falconetti is brilliant as the leading lady, she knows very well how to give a credible performance with wich she generates - right up until the very shocking (and shockingly visualised) ending - a lot of sympathy.

Despite the very low pace this is a beautiful, sad but also shocking film. You can quite understand why this was Dreyer`s personal favorite version to watch.
I am curious about the other versions featured in this release, but from what I`ve seen of them so far they aren`t at all as good as this version.

9,0/10

Do you have to enter a promo code or something for this? I've tried on the website but I can't see any information about it?

Awesome. I just bought Lifeboat and the Metropolis Blu Rays (Metropolis because it's much cheaper than I've ever seen it, and has footage that I know isn't on my DVD release of the film. Thanks for the heads up!

Watched tonight:

Jigokumon (Gate Of Hell)
Storywise it isn`t all that interesting. It is, especially towards the ending, predictable and it just flows along a bit too slow. It isn`t weird that for those reasons the film flopped at the Japanese box office when it was released almost 60 years ago.
What is good about this film is the costume design and the wonderfull use of colours. That makes up for a bit but not for all of it.

6,5/10

Likewise, really looking forward to all of them. La Notte on Blu-ray is a dream, while the Chabrol's have been a long time coming. I've got a feeling Bakumatsu Taiyo-Den will be the most talked about release tho.

Fear and Desire
Until now Kubrick`s first (although he saw that differently, he never really wanted anyone to see it) feature was almost unwatchable: the picture quality was awful and therefor never released before. Until the Library of Congress initiated a complete restauration wich made a release finally possible. That release finally is here. After Kino`s US edition, the film has now been released on blu-ray and dvd by Masters of Cinema in the UK.

The result is amazing, film-wise as well as presentation-wise. The picture quality on this blu-ray is amazing. The film itself is well worth watching. I actually don`t understand why Kubrick never wanted anyone to see it. There are many facets that we see in his later films, in the way of shooting as well as storywise. The film is just over an hour long but that hour is beautiful and gripping, until the ending that makes you long for more.

It`s a joy for every cinephile that this early work of the master is finally out there for everyone to see. Therefor, this release is a must.

8,0/10

Day of the Fight
Short film by Kubrick that is an extra on the Fear and Desire blu-ray about a boxer who is filmed during the day of a fight.
Overall it`s nothing really spectacular but some images do have a nice filmic feel to it.
Nothing too special but it`s fun to have seen this old Kubrick.

6,2/10
