Hopefully they'll get better masters than they did with Touch of Evil.  Knowing Univershit they won't.

Wait, what? you really think Touch of Evil lloks bad??

No, it doesn't look bad but it doesn't look great either and films like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend should look great.

What have you been smoking? cause that has got to be some good sh*t!!

Shames it's Wilders two most dated classics imo, recently re-watched both on Sky(where they looked pretty good tbf) and just found myself mocking their ancientness in my head.....i mean it's no fault of Wilders that he inspired an awful lot that came later, but yeah, certainly not aged as well as The Apartment, Some Like It Hot, Witness have....which are all still brilliant, and not just of their influence.

Most dated can be argued for sure but I think Double Indemnity is (one of) his best. And it still is a brilliant film and not just because of its influence on all that came afterwards.

I could maybe understand some reservations at the social problem approach to alcoholism in The Lost Weekend, but Double Indemnity is a brilliant, tight, noir that doesn't really have any aspects I would think would date in that sense?

If it's dated I'd go for the sleaze of Kiss Me Stupid, maybe?

Should be noted Billy is one of my all-time faves, and neither are as dated(in my mind) as a lot of other old films, which I do still enjoy. It's just with so many parodies, and how he actually narrates in DI......it just makes me laugh, no one talks like that, ever, it's essentially without trying to be, a parody of it's self. Eh, still a great film mind........but I'd much prefer the others I said and Sunset, which is still brilliant.

Do you read Chandler or Hammett? DI is hard-core noir and that is a style common to the sub-genre.It might be one, then,  you might generally find funny? I think the language has a rhythm and brilliance all of its own when done properly - some actors fail at pulp based noir, some excel and MacMurrary seems to revel in it with few better in the classic period (although one is Dick Powell, both as Marlowe and in other great noirs like Cry Danger).

No steelbook, no. It was released on standard Blu Ray, then re-released on dual format (BD & dvd).

Yeah, its even better if you buy them direct from Masters Of Cinema too: the money goes straight to the company, they price match Amazon and they ship as soon as the item is in stock, which is sometimes as early as three weeks before release date (Repo Man shipped 9 days early).

Island of lost souls is on the want list now also.
did you say adam that MOC may do Citizen Kane? was going to get the BD last year but may hang on, would this fall into their deal with Universal?
or they could release it in their 100th anniversary series perhaps.

also considering upgrading my M ( have it in the Fritz Lang boxset) and getting 'will success spoil rock hunter?' as its a Frank Tashlin movie ( huge WBs looney tunes fan)

Those steelbooks are very attractive. I'm a stickler for original posters for covers (or at least an adaption of them). Just picked up Repo Man steelbook this week.

No I think he mentioned that there`s a possibilty they`re gonna do The Magnificent Ambersons. Would love for that to happen!

There is some speculation that Kane might make an appearance, but a colleague of mine seems to think that Ambersons is on the horizon.

Love it. I have the Pasolini section on the Criterion disc of Mamma Rosa, and its a great little film (great performance from Welles too). I'm fond of the Godard section too, but have never seen the others.

The fact that is has a section by Godard in it is enough reason for me to get it

I watched Repo Man this afternoon:

Repo Man
The debut feature from Alex Cox is a bit odd but a fine mix of science-fiction and detective with a fat, humor filled Cold War sauce poured over it.
There are quite a few WTF?!? moments in it, wich might not make it everybody`s cup of tea. But, also thanks to a fine punk soundtrack, I thought it was very enjoyable and watchable and enjoyable.
I am curious to see the tv version that is also featured on the Masters Of Cinema blu-ray to see how they messed up this version.

8,0/10

Watched this last night too (for the upteenth time). Wasn't too blown away by the transfer (it's good but not the mind-blowing one I've read about) but its a huge improvement on the DVD and the features are great.

Stanton is clearly off his fucking rocker, though I'd kind of always got that impression (couldn't help but giggle at his bit about how he chooses scripts, he's been in a Steven Seagal movie for fuck's sake!).. Loved Cox's introduction to the film too
