I believe that is Daphne Ashbrook aka Dr. Grace Holloway technically Eights first companion.

Ah - was about to be shocked that an actual girl had attended a Dr Who convention.

Brilliant pic!

The series that never was.

(although probably a good thing in retrospect)

Also - spark - might want to adjust your links. Maybe giving some folks who don't like spoilers too much info. I don't mind but others might.

Mmm, another season likely to be buggered up. I didn't want to know about certain things last time, that was ruined, and now again. Having to deal with spoiler posts is one of the worst parts of being a Mod because inevitably you end up having things ruined in threads you already have an interest.

Ok here is a confession and a cry for help.

I love Sci Fi. I love Moffats writing but I've never really watched Doctor Who in its recent guise.

My question is when did it get good? I saw quite a few of the Christopher Ecclestone DW's and they were ok, but then I started to watch only occasionally and I caught Peter Kay as a blobby type alien. Has it moved on from this comedy-esque style into something a bit more serious or is it still played quite young and silly?

You couldn't have picked a worse episode to watch than Love & Monsters if you're only an occasional viewer.

For the flipside of what it can be like, try Fires of Pompeii, Turn Left, Human Nature/Family of Blood, Blink, Midnight, Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone/The Girl Who Waited etc...

But yeah...Love & Monsters.

I guess Peter Kay has alot to answer for. Thing is I don't like Catherine Tate either. I saw the Xmas special with her in and it was annoying.
Is there a good place to start since they've probably made a gazillion episodes?

Catherine Tate is the best Nu Who companion so far.

No of course not, you're too busy posting links in every possible thread with little or no comment to put up a spoiler warning.

All I'll say on Tate (cos I'm a huge fan and am aware that I tend to harp on about her) is that I know a *lot* of people who were violently opposed to her being the companion because they hated her in the Christmas special, but they were big fans of her by the end. The series that she's in fleshes her character out brilliantly and gives her plenty of good material to demonstrate she's much more than a sketch show comic.

If you were looking for somewhere to start, it might be best to start with Matt Smith's era. Less silly stuff than Eccleston/Tennant and the step up in terms of direction/production values between the RTD era and Moffat's is pretty startling.

Fair enough. Maybe she's different in this to my usual impressions of her.
I might start with the Matt Smith DW's and go from there

I'm not a fan of Tate when she has her own show, it's not my sort of comedy but in Who she is fantastic, a great character.

Probably not a bad idea.

I agree! I started with series 5 (Matt Smith) and I still think it's the best series. If I'd have started with series 1 I probably would have given up to be honest.

The only episodes that I thought were great during the Tennant era were Blink and the Girl in the Fireplace.

Gillan isn't even the best of the current companions

Donna > Rory > Amy

All three are/were great though, leagues ahead of Rose and Martha anyway

This.

I like Karen Gillan, I think she has been superb and I like the character of Amy however I preferred Amelia, that kid was great. Rory got stronger and stronger as did Donna, though hopefully he'll get a better exit.

Uh, they were all right but I wouldn't go out of my way to watch them again. I think after I'd seen the Matt Smith era the writing paled in comparison. Worth watching.

Hell even School Reunion (I liked it), The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit, 42, Human Nature/Family Blood and I'm not a big Tennant fan.

It's very good - the worse thing in it being her.

I'd probably like it more if that was the only time we ever saw her, because I think in that case the constant mysterious hints about who she is is completely justified.

But the space suits are great, Donna's alt-life is heartbreaking and terrifying and the ending is superb.
