This is the one I've enjoyed most so far. Not sure how they will maintain it as a series - it would certainly have worked as a TV movie. But interesting. And they did set up the makings of an arc at the end. Sort of an Eerie Indiana feel to it at times as well.

Most of the characters are nicely drawn and a clear attempt to try to make them more than 1-dimensional (e.g., the main scientist could be a by the book irritant but then you see his interaction and genuine excitement with Joe Morton near the end).

And it was pretty good fun too. I'll certainly watch again.

I hadn't realised - this premieres August 2nd on UK SF as well. Under the title A Town Called Eureka - no idea why the change. Seems pointless - I'm guessing the idiot who changed it didn't get the double-meaning.

I must have misread - I thought the promo was for SF. Mind you - I was concentrating on being annoyed at the name change!

Finally watched this and thought it was really good - funny in places and I liked a lot of the characters. Interesting to see how it develops and great that Sky have it so soon

Watched first Ep last night and have to say I was hugely impressed.  Definite tones of Eerie Indiana and Northern Exposure all over it, which is a good thing.  Of course the worry with all high concept shows such as this is that it could run out of ideas quite quickly once the novelty has worn off.

I'd hope the individual characters and relationships will help to postpone any such problems.  Carter is an interesting and likeable main character.  Not without his personal weaknesses and vices it would seem.  Joe Morton's Henry was wonderful in the Pilot, he could be a real scene-stealer given the opportunity.

Only other concern is the potential annoyingness of Mini-Carter.  I hope she doesn't just turn into a predictable awkward teenager sterotype.  Oh and Matt Frewer's accent?????? Lethal Weapon 2 all over again.

I wondered about that on the new shows thread. I thought he was trying to do Australian at first - but then he started talking about Africa and realised he was trying to do SA. I think!

I thought it was just me - I think just about everyone is Australian when I first hear them, and they're usually not. His name is very Scottish which also confused me. He was the one character I didn't like, hope he tones it down a bit.

Glad I read this as I'd forgotten about the second episode which is up on the torrents :)

I watched a few episodes of this early on and never got into it, despite some positive reviews. I think my main issue with things like that strike a tone similar to this (which includes a lot of SyFy/USA shows) is that they're not terribly ambitious and are instead satisfied with being 'solid' and 'well done'.

Anyway, read that this S4 opener was pretty good and guest starred James Callis from Galactica. And it's decent and good fun. The kind of thing I'd imagine I'd really have been into some years ago. Better than some of the other stuff I've watched new recently. Callis seemed a bit restricted by his accent (which he seems to have to work at so his actual acting suffers as a result) but is otherwise pretty watchable. I'm going to stick with this as this episode implied some long term implications and I'd like to see how that plays out and indeed if the series does become more ambitious.

I was reading something about a crossover with Warehouse 13 with Fargo.

I like Eureka - it has that kind of Casualty thing where they set up various possibilities for the thing gone wrong of the week and try to trick you into choosing the wrong one in a fun way.

He's in the fifth episode of Warehouse 13 according to IMDb (which also lists Eureka as the longer UK name, oddl). I found that a bit bland too, but if I get into this I might jump on with the crossover episodes.

Much as I like Rubinek and Pounder I find the writing on Warehouse much weaker and the character relationships little more than cookie cutter creations. THe team on Eureka work really well together, I think.

Awesome season premiere! I loved it. And James Callis, despite the accent issue - nice to see him on my screen after BSG finished. Also nice, since Erica Cerra (Jo) was in a few eps of BSG, as the surrogate mother of the cylon/human baby.

Should be great to see where it goes from here, with the long-term implications of the timeline changes.

I liked the second episode even if a lot of it went way over my head as a non-regular viewer of the series. What I could tell (and thought was good writing) was that they have clearly shifted the setting and are brave enough to stick with it, and its implications.

That's right. A lot of the character dynamics have changed and it's very interesting where it will go. They pretty much said that no major changes to the wider world are likely, but the inter-character relationships have got a lot more zing now. An inventive way to breathe new life into it.

Im currently catching up on the first 3 seasons before S4 starts on Syfy this week and I have to admit that 4 episodes in season 1 and Im not all that impressed, at times it seems okay but sometimes it feels a bit weird, it might get better as it goes along have to wait and see.

It's not exactly groundbreaking heavy duty stuff, but it's good light entertaining fun.
