SPOILERS!!!!!

OK, DRIVE... I understand what everyone is saying about it, but for my money, the key to understanding the movie is in the theme song by the band College, I think it's called 'Real Human Being' or something...

(I'll get back to that...)

The Driver is emotionless for much of the movie. We don't know why, we presume there's something awful there. But you can't deny that he looks at Carey Mulligans character with something like sad longing and also connects with the little boy. But when the little boys father comes back, he willingly puts whatever he's feeling aside to help him. It doesn't end well.

So once the Dad is out of the way, he continues to help... but once they get in the lift and he sees the gun in the guys pocket, he knows he's going to have to do something bad and that's when he kisses her for the first and (probably) last time...

And the rest of the bad stuff happens, plenty bloody, you know the rest... and he may, or not, be dead at the end. He might get over his stomach-stabbing (personally, I doubt it) or it might be a fantasy sequence thing. Whatever.

And that's when the 'Real Human Being' song' makes sense. An emotionally-burned out man had the chance to be a, yes, 'real human being' with a woman and a child. He didn't, thanks to the machinations of the criminal world, and now he drives off to whatever.

Anyway, that's my silly little opinion about DRIVE, I'm sure it's been said before by finer minds than mine, I was just sayin'...

If I remember correctly, the Blu Ray contains a Q & A with Nicolas Winding Refn where he explains how The Driver's story is a superhero story. I can't remember the details but it made a lot of sense in hindsight.

Drive is brilliant, one of my favourite films since the turn of the decade.

Talking of favourites since the new decade started, Calvary from this year is absolutely up there, as is Her.

Am with your first comment, not sure about after that? Her did leave me a bit cold. Still need to catch up with Calvary.

47 Ronin is a good adventure movie with a lot going for it. Different casting in the lead role would have made it a really good movie.

Add better editing and the whole thing in Japanese and we can talk

It's not one of the worst movies I've seen, there was some potential. But if that is all you can do with that enormous budget they had..

V For Vendetta has the best ending of any movie in the last decade. Plus it trumps the ending of Fight Club tenfold.

Austin Powers in Goldmember is so bad it's good.

Bram stoker's Dracula is awesome - I saw it at a young age and I think it inspired my love of silent film as the first few minutes always blew my mind. Also the style of the film was beautiful enough to overshadow Keanu's accent! I never see love for it and I think it is looked down on for being a fantasy film with vampires rather than being in Coppola's wheelboat of epic gangster/war films. However this does not forgive Jack!

Can't remember the ending to VFV its been ages. And no that is no me asking for a spoiler
Still its no where near as good as Fight Club, even if the end maybe better

The Austin Powers movies are meant to be spoofs so you could make that statement about all of them.

My unpopular opinion- Not a fan of Kubrick.

Sure the guy knew what he was doing but none of his films resonate with me.

Godzilla is the best blockbuster for years upon years. Staggeringly awe-inspiring spectacle but also totally restrained in the best way. If you're coming out of this complaining about the plot I feel so, so sorry for you. Maybe I adored it so much because I'm a fan of the old series since I can remember, but good god, I've never felt the joy I felt while watching something at the cinema before like I did in the last half of this film.

OK, mate, I'm in... just promise me it's better than PACIFIC RIM, which I went into with similar expectations...

Yeah, it's better than Pacific Rim. But I liked Pacific Rim though, sooooo.....

I haven't seen anyone else on this board that's loved it like I did, that's why I posted it in here I guess. It does amaze me though that people complain about the plot and characters etc, but they're absolutely fine and do exactly what they need to and that's provide a base for the film that I never found dull once. Not entirely engaging, but never found it dull because the joy of the first half of the film comes from the fantastic MUTO scenes and the anticipation of the Godzilla arrival and it's all done perfectly for what it needed to be. Do people really think the characters and plot in the '54 film are amazing? because they aren't. But that film is looked back upon with such fondness. When it's all said and done, it 100% delivered what I wanted and the sheer joy of every single tease and reveal and roar pays off to the maximum degree because sweet jesus is the last act staggering, especially if you have that fondness for Godzilla.

I loved it too. I really enjoyed the teasing of Godzilla and how he was portrayed as a force of nature. The first half of Godzilla is a much more interesting film than the cliché driven second half though. There's a noticeable drop in quality at a certain point and then we are stuck watching every other military sci-fi/monster movie that's come out over the years.

Roland Emmerich's Godzilla film is much more fun to watch than the new, self-serious version - and I think Emmerich is a prick!!

I don't get this self-serious accusations led at the new Godzilla. It's closer to Jurassic Park in tone more then anything, features some dry humour, enjoys occasionally being a by-the-numbers blockbuster (while presenting it with style), features a fucking dog outrunning a tsunami and unlike the previous Godzilla it doesn't come like a dated Jurassic Park clone (which I enjoy, shit as it is).

Love how they show that the U.S. military end up causing more destruction to the city than Godzilla does!

I liked it. Not a patch on the original of course, but as far as modern horror goes it was ok. Even the CGI was quite good.
