This short review of Batman Returns sums up perfectly what was so wrong with Burtons Batman films ( And Tim Burton movies in general )..

Why is camp suddenly a bad thing?

I mean, Predator, Commando etc all are VERY campy. But it is done well. Burtons Batman movies are camp, but done well. The two sequels are also camp, but of the bad variety.

Jack's interpretation of Joker is really the only element of 89 Batman that's really camp, but therein lies the problem.

The Joker is supposed to be a menacing psychotic with a twisted sense of humour. Jack has the twisted sense of humour, but his OTT camp performance undercuts the menace. He's basically a pantomime villain. It's a performance that sticks out like a sore thumb in an otherwise dark and solidly made flick.

Heath Ledger fucking crushed that role. He got it right.

The Joker has been interpeted just as many times as Batman...there isn't one clear cut version of the character.

Yeah, but I just found Nicholson's performance to be a little bit too much. It doesn't fit in Burton's otherwise serious minded flick.

If only Burton has stepped in and said: "Uh, dude, turn it down a little, yeah?"

Apparently Burton did not have a lot of control over that particular film.

Joker has always been BIG BIG BIG - people always talk about the Animated Series - he isn't that much different in the cartoon to what Jack did. And remember he isn't all goofy.

The campness is only one of the many problems with Burtons Batman films. The lack of decent stories and the focus on the villains to the detriment of Batman himself ( Especially in Returns ) are even bigger problems.

and camp isnt necessarily a bad thing.I actually enjoy Batman Forever quite a bit.It wears its campness on its sleeve and does it well and its pretty action packed and fun flled ride.Batman and Robin however is utter gash.

But why is campness a problem in the Burton films? It isn't like Burton isn't campy anyway. It is part of his make up as a director.

Is Predator camp? Commando, sure and it turns it up to 11 on the homo-eroticism scale, but whilst Predator has a fair amount of machismo it never appears camp. McTiernan makes it much more straight-laced.

Don't think there is anything wrong with a little bit of camp in Batman films as long as it is kept in check. Returns is far darker and overall more successful than the first film for me.

There is an element of it I would say - esp with characters such as Blaine - larger than life comic book characters with silly one liners etc. But again, it is all about tone and levels of camp.

Of course it is.Returns is boring, overlong, and way too silly to be taken seriously.

Again i point to this review which is a perfect summation of why the film sucks..http://blip.tv/confused-matthew/batman-returns-miniview-6291015

( Im not Confused Matthew by the way ).

Forever isnt afraid to be camp and does it well but the serious parts of the story are well handled. The film is also a lot of fun with a ton of great action sequences and Kilmer was a much better Batman than Keaton.

That is a bizarre thing to choose to criticise Returns for, when comparing against Forever.

I found Returns no less silly than the Jodhpur prison sequences and the climax of Dark Knight Rises, and Returns had an excuse of being in a fantastical Gotham. TDKR didn't.

Yay, someone else who doesn't like Burton's shitty Batman films. Boring, dull, god awful dialogue, focus way too much on the villains who are all pretty bad anyway apart from Catwoman, Batman becomes an afterthought. All things wrong with those films. Just because they are 'dark and gothic' (apparently) does not make them good or excuse the awful shit in them.

The Dark Knight Rises is rather a good if flawed film - what film isn't? That seems to be quite an unpopular opinion. Well, it is round 'ere!

Tim Burtons Batman films may LOOK dark but they are actually nearly as camp as silly as Schumachers.

They are also basically feature length episodes of the Adam West TV show with some superficial Frank Miller/Dark Knight trappings - big name movie stars slumming it and camping it up dreadfully while unfairly overshadowing the star and damagingly shifting the films' focus.

(I still like 'em, though.)

I actually have a few of these... the couple at the top of my head right now are:

I think the entire Matrix Trilogy is great, except for one scene in Reloaded (the rave... not the Architect).
At World's End is my favourite Pirates Of The Caribbean movie because it's so convoluted.

Are you kidding? All those big, oiled-up, muscley guys alone in the jungle with their not-at-all fetishistic or Freudian weaponry? (Get a room, guys!) It's camp because it's so po-faced and humourless. The only 80s film camper than Predator (or Commando) has gotta be the gloriously OTT Road House (which actually has a baddie throw back his mullet and go: "MWA-HA-HA-HA-HAAAAAAAAAAA...!!!" Hee-larious!)

I love Predator too, BTW. And Commando - THE archetypal 80s action movie! The Expendables is to Commando what The Darkness are to Rainbow!
