1. To end this Batman/Spider thing I just might that Bat is darker and I was partly jorking anyway so moving on!

2. Crowne is one of those classic directors than when he is good he is very good as in the cases of Say Anything, Jerry Mcquire and Almost Famous, but then he has done his fair share of turkeys such as Elizabeth Town, Vanilla Sky and We Bought a Zoo. When he gets the perfect cast (as in right for those parts not necssary the best actors) and a focues script that is when he really shines, but if you give him too much of a budgit then he falls down. Also think maybe he has lost focus since becoming a bigger name.

I loved Vanilla Sky when I first saw it. Might have a rewatch to see if it was as good as the first time.

I keep forgetting about Vanilla Sky, I didn't hate it but it was a bit of a mess.

We're getting a bit off track here I never said it was the general consensus (althrough from a critics stand point I would think it is) just that I used it as example for my Crowne argument.

It's not a typical Crowe work though, more just an excuse to get the Jerry Maguire team back together. Tbf, Cruise is pretty good here, I always think he's at his best when his character's are slightly unhinged, but I think Crowe was a poor choice of director. Haven't seen Abre Los Ojos though so not sure.

I shouldn't go after him so hard, but on the other hand Almost Famous did piss me off.

I really like Almost Famous and Say Anything, quite like Jerry Maguire and even have a soft spot for Elizabethtown. Vanilla Sky is wretched though.

I think Abre Los Ojos is generally better than Vanilla Sky (Penelope Cruz is woeful in the latter) but then VS has the odd moment here and there that I wish had been in the original. Tom Cruise running through an empty Times Square was a particularly excellent sequence. And Kurt Russell is great value.

I feel you may have something if Crowe relied solely on the nostalgia and the fact that it is based on his real life experenice but it is very much the casting which he nails which make it a much more character driven, funny and touching story. Also think the on stage scenes are really well done and that is always a big part of getting this sort of film right.

They certainly have their moments of camp and silliness. Although, Batman strapping a bomb to a dude and kicking him down a hole for him to explode is pretty dark (with a bit of silly thrown in)
