I really liked Watchmen actually, I think people are far too harsh on it. I haven't read the graphic novel though.

I personally feel its one of Snyders stronger films in his filming career.
Again its not perfect and does have times where it lags but visualy its done well and it clearly brings that classic pulp comic representation from the book onto the big screen with its great color pallette well.
The acting is solid enough and I felt Jacke Earle Haley put in a very good, underated, performance as Rorschach.

Certaintly not a huge disaster in my opinion.

Is Watchmen generally considered to be bad? I've never really read up on reviews for it. I rather liked it - definitely better than the crap-fest that was Sucker Punch.

I hated it myself, and slated it in my review. I'm a big fan of Snyder tho (defended Sucker Punch to the heavens), and Watchmen is one of my favourite books. I just felt like he really didn't get it.

Watchmen had an incredibly interesting divisive response, the sort something like Eyes Wide Shut got.

I thought it was as good as it was flawed AND features the worst sex scene of all time.

Watchmen is a mess of a film that I think takes itself too seriously, Ozy was hirlariously miscast and JEH doing a midget batman impression is just annoying. I do however love the opening sequence, think that Wilson is very underrated and overall find it fairly entertaining to watch. It also highlight's Snyders inability to do create a dcent narrative.

On the Star Wars debate: Just ordered the Blu Ray set online and am very much looking forward to an acion packed weekend.

Never read it, but I really loved the film (DC).
What is that you think Snyder didn't get about the story? The only big difference I've heard about is the ending (and the squid thing sounds rubbish, I think the film ending is fine), but were there tonal differences or something?

I enjoyed Watchmen.Although strangely, i thought it was both overated and underated in equal measure.

May give the DC a look in the near future.

Any chance you could explain this? How is it both over-rated and under-rated in equal measure? There may be an explanation, but in my head that makes no fucking sense.

As for Watchmen, I personally love it, even the shit parts. Given the baggage that came with that movie, I think Snyder did a commendable job. If I recall, Greengrass' version would've been a massive detour from the novel, and in terms of faithfulness, I think Snyder was damned if he did and damned if he didn't. Slavishly following the look and style of the book resulted in people complaining that it wasnt it's own thing, whereas changing things up would've resulted in people complaining about changes - as they did with the lack of Squid. I think Watchmen was about as faithful and successful as an adaptation of the source could hope to be without alienating huge sections of the general audience. Having said that, staying faithful still seemed to keep away the GA.

Ergo, the film is now in perfect balance. Or something.

I really enjoyed Watchmen myself and have now seen it several times and have enjoyed it just as much on each subsequent viewing. My mate read the comic and loved the film (although he would slaughter me for calling his beloved graphic novel a comic), he said he enjoyed them both equally, but they were better viewed as seperate entities.
A bit like the book and film of The Shining, I enjoyed both but they don't really sit well together.
Neither do a fine pint of bitter with ice cream, I enjoy them both but  . . . well, Im sure you get the point .

Batman (1989) is better than Batman Begins and The Dark Kinght. And Jack Nicholson's Joker is superior to Heath Ledger's.

Most of the characters of Prometheus were no better or worse fleshed out than the ones in Aliens.

True dat. I tried explaining this to a friend but he wouldn't hear it. Aliens uses the characters better though rather than having random shit happen to them for no good reason.

Yeah, that's possibly true, but I loved how ruthless and how easily they were picked out in Prometheus. I was kinda surprised when a certain character met with the squashy end she ended up with. .

I was also struck with a feeling that shouted "How on Earth was Bill Paxton or Hicks better-written characters than Fifield?" while watching Prometheus. Also, I found the somewhat religious, possibly very religious Shaw and David to be some of the finest in the series.

Ha.I think what i was trying to convey is that iv heard some descrbe it as '' THE BEST COMIC BOOK MOVIE EVER! '' which it clearly isnt, and some who think its just rubbish.Im kinda in the middle of those two opinions. So i guess im saying in a nice way that i think the film is average.

Attack The Block isn't all that. Everyone loved it, but I couldn't get past the fact that the lead characters - the people we're supposed to be rooting for throughout the movie - introduce themselves by knocking down and robbing an innocent women. Those 'youvs' are exactly the kind of people I hate, so I was actually rooting for the aliens whenever the woman wasn't there.

This line of thought has popped up before. I don't agree with the sentiment: Unlikeable protagonists are some of the most iconic of all. Jake LaMotta, Patrick Bateman, Sonny Corleone, the list goes on, and besides, the kids in Attack The Block have a thorough redemption arc: their situations are evaluated and their behaviour explained.

Going in with a hatred for a whole section of society probably didn't help you judge the film in anything remotely fairly to be honest, but the intentions of the filmmaker, who was inspired in to making Attack The Block after being robbed by a gang of youths similar to the ones in the film, was to understand why they did what they did to him.

I like the film but their behaviour isn't explained really (unless I've missed it). The main protagonist is left alone by his dad so I can kind of understand why he might feel the need to cause trouble (but not mug other people) but what about the white boy who lives with his beloved gran? What was his excuse? Peer pressure.

As for redemption, the suggestion that only an alien invasion would stop this lot from being utter cunts is a depressing thought indeed.

'attack the block' is like one of those old westerns where the outlaws end up becoming the heroes and saving the day.
redemption is part of the deal.
the setting maybe urban london but the idea is the same.

It did inpsire that fantastic moment when J. Cornish got angry at Kermode for reviewing Shaun of the Dead instead of his film. I haven't actually seen the film, mainly because the accents and speech would do my head in.

Get what you mean about the accents, and I was nearly put off going to see it by the trailer which I thought was crap. However it's worth sticking with - thought it was a wee gem, albeit with a couple of sequences which didn't work. And although I kind of get the point another poster made about the protagonists being unsympathetic, the flip side of that was at least it was a genuine attempt not to just demonise that section of society?

The big difference though is that the characters in Aliens are memorable, well written, and played by very good actors.Even now over 25 years later Aliens is one of the most quotable movies ever made.I cant see anyone remembering much about Prometheus' characters other than how stupid they were.

You cant really tell whether or not a character in Prometheus will be more or less memorable compared to a film that has been out for 25 years though.

As for them being well written, take off those rose tinted specs. Half the Marines in Aliens were paper-thin cannon fodder material and even the well written ones like Burke still fell into the cliche pit from time to time.

Most of the Marines in Aliens were B-movie actors. The calibre of acting talent in Prometheus far outstrips those in Aliens, there's at least half a dozen Oscar/GG and/or Bafta nominees/winners among them.

I love Aliens, but all this is on the money. You cant really call Apone, Hudson, Gorman, Burke and the rest well written.
