I thought Take Shelter was a really interesting watch. Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain were awesome.

Sounds like you're mate has better taste in films than you do.

- There's no point in going to the cinema any more. It's cheaper and more effective to wait a month and buy it on Blu-Ray.
- I've not seen The Avengers and won't be doing so until it is released on Blu-Ray.
- The critical and commercial success of The Avengers once again confirms Whedon as the undisputed saviour of the industry and our race.
- Black Swan is more effective as a horror than a drama.

Joss Whedon is our saviour? Is he the second coming of Christ?

I always thought of Black Swan as a psychological horror flick. Seems like Argento was an influence on Aronofsky during its making.

IMO, yes. But that's for another thread and it's my first day back.

Vad3r, I respectfully tear the shit out of your post.

Yes, it's cheaper and more (cost?) effective to wait a month and buy a film on Blu-Ray, but the cost of going to the cinema is meant to be outweighed by the audiovisual assault you're paying to experience. I don't know how much you value the cinema experience, which is still, in 2012, the intended medium for the majority of films, when the expense cannot be surmounted by any subjective factors of enjoyment or enlightenment.

quote:

- I've not seen The Avengers and won't be doing so until it is released on Blu-Ray.

I would tentatively agree with this, and so would everyone else, based on the previous line in your post.

quote:

- The critical and commercial success of The Avengers once again confirms Whedon as the undisputed saviour of the industry and our race.

The saviour of 20th century music and art overall is Frank Zappa. The saviour of the film industry in the 21st century (or maybe the 22nd, at the rate people seem to be catching on) is Quentin Tarantino, but I won't go into the reasons here.

quote:

- Black Swan is more effective as a horror than a drama.

Yeah.

Never underestimate the power of family drama films in the right company. I'll Be Home For Christmas has the potential to be a transcendental film-watching experience. Yes, you read that correctly.

Disagree. Huge HDTV, kick-ass sound and a dark room provide me with endless hours of enjoyment and 'enlightenment'.

Paul WS Anderson is a good director and story teller.

As is Len Wiseman.

I think all the vitriol against these two is unconscious jealousy and nothing to do with the quality of their movies.

Ok I don't really think that, but I do rate them both - their movies are brilliant entertainment, I've never walked away disappointed.

But there was really no point to Take Shelter - come the final scene, we had learned nothing more than we really knew at the start. Yes, the film was very well made and created a great atmosphere, the acting gets plaudits (although I personally couldn't see what was so special about either character to be honest), but when it was over there was just a big sense of "so what??". Have to agree, very unsatisfying.

Well I think it's EVERYTHING to do with the quality of their movies (especially PWS - still can't forgive him for getting his claws on that Soldier script, could've been a great action film in the hands of a Scott)

That's seems to be the pervading view of everything WS does: "It would have been better if such-and-such had done it."

I think part of the issue is that when a popular property is taken on, the rabid fans have the perfect vision of what it should be in their minds eye. Sadly, that has 6 billion to one chance of being the same vision the director has, so most people go in with a preconceived idea of what an Anderson movie should be and come out hating him because its not precisely, exactly what they wanted for their chosen franchise.

Or, look at it this way. Most people will grudgingly say that Event Horizon and the Death Race remake are ok-to-decent movies. But get them started on AvP or Resident Evil and its a different story.

I thought that too, so I asked him. He was a little bit offended, saying the only comparative points between the two were the fact that ballet appeared in both (and he actually argued that Suspiria wasn't even a ballet film). Interesting side note - he only saw The Red Shoes for the first time halfway through shooting Black Swan. This also surprised me, given how I took Black Swan for being purposefully anti-Red Shoes in the manner in which the ballet sequences were executed.

IMHO Event Horizon is a really good film.

Death Race is a fun and disposable bit of fluff.

Also, I did wonder how long after the success of The Avengers vad3r would reappear.

Going back a page or two, I'm disappointed nobody mentioned the Three Colours Trilogy.
