3D will be the death of cinema.

I remember the good old days, none of these colour talkies, when movies were movies.

How can 3D last when it's physically painful?

Well they said that about Big Brother and look how that turned out.

I don't much care for 3D either, but I don't think its the death knell you're predicting. More a passing fad, like smellovision or Fred Savage.

Only colour and talkies actually came to use and this is nothing but a gimmick that has already failed twice and proved useless to the films.

House of Wax (With awesomeness incarnated Vincent Price) was in 3D, I saw it on 2D, did it change the film, make it better, do anything to enchance it? No, not a single thing. In fact I hadn't even realised it was supposed to be on 3D until someone told me.

I think 3D is great, it truly will revolutionise cinema, just like it did in the 80's

Honest,

really,

I really really think that's the case.

And in the 50s!

I think thats because we (a modern audience) are so used to it, and by default associate it differently to how an audience would have in 1960. The fact that its been parodied to death doesnt help. I've always said that the character of Hannibal Lector has suffered from the same problem. In Silence of the Lambs he's a terrifying character, in 2009 he's a pastiche.

Norman Bates running away from the shower to his house after the murder is still creepy as hell though.

Speaking of which adam, I've seen The Element of Crime a few weeks ago, it was fantastic, wasn't sure on it at first watch but it has certainly grown on me. And the scene in the bay (where they are finding dead donkeys) shown from the helicopter's bird's eye view is outstanding.

I agree the shower scene in Psycho is not that scary, the music kind of makes it comical

Thats only because its been parodied and imitated so many times in so many formats, now any time a character in a tv show is a crazy person the Psycho theme will be used, its not the films fault, its still one of the most iconic few moments of movie history

3D moving images are not films, they're holograms, and should be treated as a separate medium of storytelling, or artform.

Scariest scene in Psycho is when the detective gets to the top of the stairs and Bates runs at him from the room across the hall, shown from a bird's eye view. Genius Hitch.

There was a time before technicolour where filmmakers painted each frame to create colour films (e.g. some of Melies' shorts). Maybe the 3D of the past was this and now we get the 3D where is works beautifully?

You of course will not know since you won't be seeing Avatar in 3D.

I understand the purpose of 3D is to provide an immersive experience but for me it's distracting and takes me out of the film.

Good point on matte paintings, you lose points for mentioning Melies (he is great mind you, but he was in the 20-30s) and not a better example like Amytiville, Jaws 3D, Dail M For Murder, you know, where they actually used 3D. but it still doesn't make the technology no less painful, headache inducing, gimmicky nonsense. And judging by some responses read on Avatar Day, it really can worsen the experience.

Actually I don't think I'm even watching Avatar in 2D in the cinemas, the more I look at it and read about it the far worse it looks and looks like another soul sucking self-indulgent exercise for Cameron to play with technologies and think he's an artist.

And that is what makes it so damned useless and pointless, it is as if it is made to make a film experience immersive, as if film wasn't immersive without such gimmicks. As if The Dark Knight would be better with 3D.

I stand corrected there. Horrible mistake of mine there. He worked from the 1890s to 1910's right? Very bad mistake of mine there. I was unsure if he came in the same time with the Lumiere's so I ended up posteing that ridiculous part of the post.

Yeah, he was a contemporary of the Lumiere's. Where as they were making boring this is how it is films, he saw the real potential for the medium. Its all good though.

Yes. When I was a kid and I first saw the movie, that was the scene that I found most disconcerting.

I'm assuming on 400 plus pages the fact that James Dean is monumentally overrated has already been mentioned once or twice?

Star Wars prequels are a thousand times better than LOTR.

People over the age of 15 who think Buffy/Angel are great TV shows are in serious, serious trouble.

Only response to the lotr comment is what star wars prequels. All resident evil films and silent hill are massively under rated and spiderman 3 and watchmen are Terrible films.

I agree 100%! I studied that scene for a Media Studies course and all it did was help me fall asleep in the back of the classroom. Alfred Hitchcock's films bore the living piss outta me.

You just didn't believe us when we told you it was one of the darkest and most frakked up twisted films to come out of Hollywood, PA. And Homer puts Scrooged about Sim's Scrooge so is officially dead to me.

I also like the story of it being the tale of the Gold Standard and various US politicians.
