That's a personal opinion though. Maybe you'd like to be reminded of the bad to make the good seem even better.

I'm not helping am I!

No you are! There is part of me that would like the Tattoo when this is over as a lasting reminder that if I can get through this (A nasty custody battle for my son, where my family have been dragged through the mud) and get my baby home again. I can get through anything. The other part of me is thinking I just want to put it all behind me and move on and never ever speak of it again.

HQ, while in future years it may remind you of the bad times, it will also (hopefully) remind you of the joy of getting through them.  Not much wrong with that sentiment if you ask me.  If you're not sure about using those words, what about something more symbolic?  The traditional Japanese koi design perhaps?

According to legend, it swims upwards against a waterfall to pass through the Dragon Gate, whereupon it is transformed into a dragon - symbolising overcoming life's difficulties to emerge stronger.  Though it may have to become a slightly bigger tattoo than you had anticipated to do it justice.

As for placement, the best advice I could give would be to go into a studio and speak to an artist.

Wow thanks Sharky I love the idea of something symbolic. I'd not thought of that I may have a flip through some legends and see if something leaps out on me. Sizing to be honest doesn't really bother me.

All food for thought, if anyone else has suggestions for me I'd be glad to hear them.

I want to get a tattoo for my son I'm torn between his first and middle initial which we call him as a nickname i.e HQ as a monogram type thing or because of the extreme shit we are going through at the moment "Hope dies last" with very small angel wings either side. I'm also torn between placement I love the idea of the monogram on the wrist but because of work I don't think that's appropriate so am leaning more towards on my hip.

Going back to your original post. Mine is for something similar. Having gone through depression for the past 4 years and finally starting to see the back end of it, mine is a reminder that no matter how bad it gets, it can get better.

Annnnnnd I'm booked in for my tattoo a week on Monday, looking forward to it, it's been nearly three years since my last tattoo Just getting my daughters name tattooed on my arm, in the same style that I have my sons name but on the opposite side of the same arm. I'm then planning on going back in a few months looking to make it into a sleeve.

Get some photos up YFU!  Reckon it's about time I gave some thought to adding a bit of background to my backpiece.  I'm also looking to get one of my chest tattoos covered and turned into a full japanese chest piece, but all that will probably have to wait until after my wedding in September!

I'm looking into getting my first tattoo this week. My Dad passed away earlier in the year so I was looking to get something for him. He was a massive Roy Orbison fan so I was just thinking of getting some lyrics from one of his songs that are meaningful to me on my forearm.

90% sure I'm happy with what I've chosen, gonna go and talk to the artist today or tomorrow. Just a wee bit nervous...

Well I went ahead and got it done. Not sure my father would have approved, even if it is from Roy Orbison.

I'm very happy with it.
Wasn't really painful at all but then it is pretty small in comparison to the likes of Sharky's.
I immediately wanted another after getting this done, looking at ideas now.
