Yeah the guy who wrote that clearly has too much time on his hands but I'd still agree with his analysis.

A bit too long to digest in a quick scive in the office, but you don't really need to read past this toptastic line...

"Superman Returns stinks up the joint."

Hahaha! Say. No. Mor...

I think calling it a bad film is a bit much.

Calling it a bad film is like calling Hitler a "bad man". It's a crime against hu-bastard-manity. I can't out-do that other fucker's review so I'll just repeat that line...

But a bad film? Not by a long shot.

I take your point but it's Brian Singer, Kevin Spacy and it's Superman. I sort of liked it first time around then I realised the director, the budget, the potential and all the little things just kept pilling up and piling up and eventually I couldn't stand it anymore. It had become worse than the sum of it's parts. It was a failure in spirit and in action.

That said I like Brandon Routh or Roth or whatever his name was.

It was a very good film. But Lois Lane looked to young to have a child.

This film managed to successfully emulate everything that the first two had, with one crucial exception: they missed out the fun.

After the (admittedly hugely exciting) plan rescue, the film is over-long, tedious and just creepy - so Superman now uses his powers for voyeurism? And it may go down well in the Bible-belt (or not) but all the Christ-like symbolism of the ending was layered on very thickly, and made a sanctimonious glop of an ending. It could have finished up to forty minutes sooner for my liking.

Caught this last night, opinion remains the same.

A Superman motion picture with loads of effects and money thrown at it minus one thing - fun.

I completely agree with the five star rating. I don't know what some people where expecting. This has the perfect balance of action and storyline. Those who disagree simply don't understand what Superman is all about.

Considering how much of a misfire the Superman portrayed here is I very much doubt that. I think they know only too well what the character is supposed to be and represent.

in a weird coincidence, being that this thread seems to have jumped today, quentin tarantino has announced that hes working on a 20 page review of superman returns.

http://www.slashfilm.com/2009/05/03/quentin-tarantino-calls-inglourious-basterds-a-masterpiece-writing-epic-review-of-superman-returns/#more-26956

kinda an interesting endeavour, im not sure really what the point is but im eager to find out.

Quentin's ego may be bigger than his chin, but even I think the idea of a 20-page defense of Superman Returns by someone like him will be awesome to read.

I would have thought QT hated Superman returns. Then again, the guy is nostalgic for anything that reminds him of the 70's so no wonder he liked that indulgent piece of boring trash.

Watched it again today.  It's a four star film loses a star for a few silly story points.  Lois is a reporter and her converstaion with her husband about whether Clark is Superman is dumb.  She just dismisses that it's him? It fails on the usual glasses disguise - it's so old hat now.  Smallville has Clark move so fast that nobody can take a decent picture (this is much better)

The ending makes sense.  The sun heals him slower then it normally would if he flew up to where it is (see earlier in the film) However lifting the Kryptonite structure out of the water makes little sense.  It's supposed to be that he's focused and he doesn't feel the effects until afterwards but it's still stupid.  However this is a two and a half hour film and for the most part it's excellent.  The special effects, the emotion, the score and the actors make it extremley entertaining.  Despite it's faults it gets better with every watch...

Love this film. Following Batman Begins the previous year, it seems many were expecting Superman Returns to also go dark and take itself too seriously. However, Singer nailed the tone of the film IMO and i would have loved to have seen him 'go all Wrath of Khan' on the sequel. Oh well.

As I have said before, the only flaw in this film is Kate who is too weak as Lois Lane.

Otherwise this a fantastic love letter to Donner's 1978 masterpiece

She is a real good actress what I meant by weak is that the "look" if you know what I mean:

She does not look the hard ass reporter that Lois should be, she looks "the nice girl" if all this makes sense.

Erica in Smallville carries the role off greatly...

Erica Durance is perfect as Lois Lane.

And Tom Welling (acting skills aside) looks perfect as Clark Kent/Superman.

Part of the problem is that she is also supposed to be the same character as the one played infinitely better by Margot Kidder. What happened to the passion the character had and the personality. If this film had been seperate from the originals I believe it would have been better viewed. It was the foolish decision to attempt to make a sequel which didn't link together (other than very clumsily) with its precursors which was one of the more damaging aspects for the film.

That one brief episode with Tom dressed in the full Clark Kent suit (glasses and all) he really looked the biz!

Brandon Routh was great though, I have to be honest with you.

Glad we agree about Erica....she really is fantasic in the role and the chemistry between the her and Tom is top notch.

Totally agree with you on this, Margot may have not had and I don't mean to be harsh, the beautiful look but she carried the role perfectly, but as I said earlier Kate seemed too nice and you just could not get the image of Kidder's Lane out of your head.

Do people need to start adding "in my opinion" on the end of all their posts?  I wish people would stop throwing RT ratings at people as if that proves them wrong
