A VERY comfortable win for the Reserve/Youth XI against Canvey Island on Monday...... .11-0!

Barnard got 4 and Dawkins bagged a 13 minute hat-trick.

I'm a bit nervous about Saturday's trip to the Reebok.
We should win comfortably, but you never know with Bolton..... so I'm going for a draw.

What about Ekotto, is he gonna be first choice left back this season? Is Lee gonna be dropped or will he just switch across to the right? And if Lee switches across to the right, will he be the one to bite the bullet should Pascal turn up eventually?

Ekotto is indeed the first choice left-back.
Lee Young-Pyo seems to be the new option at right-back, but if we do sign a new righ-back, I think Lee will move to left midfield.  Not that it's any benefit as he still can't cross with his left foot.

Still awaiting development on the Mido side of things.
We do need a 4th striker, especially with extra games in Europe, so I'm hoping we look at someone with proven ability either in the Premiership or Europe.

According to Sky Sports, we have made a new offer for Chimbonda.
Sooner or later I think Wigan will give in.  Lets face it - they won't pick him now and they'll want him off the wage bill......
We were apparently approaching Ajax for Grygera as an alternative option.

And is Taino going to get his game this season?

Was debating that with my brother last night.
He reckons that, with the sale of Fatboy Reid yesterday, there must be a leftie on the way in.
If not, he thinks that either Tainio or Davids will play on the left with Jenas the attacking midfielder.
I think Jenas will be the leftie, with Davids in alongside Zokora, but that would be quite a negative set-up.
Guess a lot will depend on the opposition (so for Bolton on Sat I go with Davids & Zokora to break up the Bolton midfield).

Either way - it's not an ideal for either.... especially if you look at Tainio's 2nd against Inter where he took the ball on the right and went for it.

I don't think the midfield will be very settled this season, with lots of chopping and changing to ensure rest/fitness for the UEFA campaign.

Right if we have a great pre-season next year I'm not gonna get too excited. You only get disappointed.

Some thoughts on todays game

Robinson continued where he left off at the WC, looking shaky on crosses but made one stunning save. Dawson's  a great defender but he keeps hitting massive cross-field passes that don't come off. Assou-Ekotto has decent pace but needs to improve his distribution.
Midfield need to get Lennon the ball more. Zokora sat very deep and while he maybe a better tackler than Carrick don't think he's as good a passer. Jenas should let someone else have a go at free-kicks. Not sure about Davids, he works hard and is very competitive but at times he looks so slow. If we don't get a natural left-sided player in I think Tainio would be a better option.
Didn't create much for the strikers but the Defoe-Berbatov combination looked promising. Berbatov looks like a much better all-round player than Mido. Keane played the pass of the match when he came on.

Obviously a frustrating start with room for improvement but on the bright side, as the commentators kept saying we're always crap at Bolton so hopefully things will be a lot better on Tuesday.

Bolton isn't a good place to go at any point in the season, especially not at the start.

I was surprised that we were apparently so poor, but against a physical side that hasn't changed much over the summer, I guess defeat was to be expected.
I've only seen the goals - I'm not stupid enough to pay 7 for that!
Clear foul on Davenport which left Davies unmarked for the first.  However, Meite was also having his shirt pulled slightly, so maybe that's why no foul was given.

As for the 2nd goal - Robbo should NOT be beaten from 40 yards - by anyone, and certainly not Ivan Campo!

I think it was the shirts that did it though...... girly blue resulted in us playing like a bunch of girls!

Let's just hope we get an improvement tomorrow at home to Sheffield United and then Everton on Saturday.

A much improved return to form last night.

Great start for Berbatov, scoring one and setting up the 2nd for Jenas.
Keane ran the show though, which will ultimately result in lots of bench time for Defoe again!
Jenas FINALLY had the opportunity to break forward and his goal last night could be just the spark he needs.

I paid 8 to watch the Bolton horror show, oh well

I agree about the blue kit too, though it's better than the 3rd kit which is really horrible.

On to Tuesday's game. I listened to the match and saw the brief highlights on MOTD last night and obviously an improved performance. Sounds like they played really well for the first 20 minutes and then cruised it.
Glad that Berbatov has an early goal, great for his confidence in a new league. Surprised Zokora was dropped but pleased that Tainio played well in his place. Sounds like Keane was fantastic as well. I don't think he got enough credit last season. There was a lot of talk about Defoe not being in the team but the same stories hardly ever mentioned the reason. Robbie Keane was brilliant every week.

Finally I hope Pedro Mendes is back playing again soon.

Bizarrely we're unseeded for this season's UEFA Cup, despite finishing 5th in the Premiership.  Newcastle & Blackburn are both seeded (presumably it's about previous European campaigns as opposed to how they qualified).

We face one of:

Bayer Leverkusen
FC Brugges
Slavia Prague
Dynamo Bucharest
Partizan Belgrade

Hopefully we can avoid the Germans.......

Well we've got Slavia Prague - any thoughts?

Hopefully we can get through this round and progress to the league round.

Tricky, but could have been worse.
If we can come through with a draw away from home and even an away goal, I think we will be fine.
The home leg shouldn't be an issue.

Then again - these days there's no such thing as an easy tie!

There is when both clubs are owned by the same company.

ENIC own 29.8% of Spurs and 96.7% of Slavia Prague.

Is that still true though.
I thought UEFA brought in a ruling which stated no teams with the same controlling powers could be in the same competition.

Is 29% a 'controlling interest' though?

I think Davids should go,he was clearly at fault for lead up to second goal.Too slow.Jenas isn't fairing much better neither.Wish Mido was still here.

My brother had the game live on tv in the US and said it was attrocious.  Actually stated it was the worst he'd EVER seen us play!!!

We're too negative in the centre of midfield with Zokora & Davids paired together.  Jenas was never wanted by Jol in the first place.......  Lennon's about the only positive in that midfield and he's getting double-teamed everytime at the moment.

The good news is that Mido has re-signed for the club!!!!
The bad news is that there's no-one to knock the ball into him......

United away isn't exactly the most ideal game at this point in time either.

Latest transfer update from my brother (or what he's heard):

Malbranque - done deal with either Routledge or Murphy going to Fulham (possibly both).
Chimbonda - deal close
Either Zenden or Kewell are reportedly at Spurs Lodge at the moment for a medical!!!
Ben Arfa - bid accepted by Lyon
Baptista - Real are expected to accept the latest offer.  Whether the player moves is another matter.....

I'm pleased about Mido. Good back-up for Berbatov and I've never seen anyone score as many scrappy goals as he does, that always comes in handy.

Kewell or Zenden, I'd take either of those for the left.

Teletext are saying Lee is moving to Roma so Chimbonda maybe coming.

Lee has stayed put, apparently for religious reasons!

Rodrigo Defendi has gone to Roma on loan with a view to a 17,000 permanent deal.

Kewell apparently knows nothing of a bid from Spurs.

We need some serious spending now that West Ham have got the deals of the decade........I fear they could become the 2nd best team in London........
