We seem to have done an Arsenal, after all the group games of the Champions League we have home Premiership fixtures, it's only when we get to the final rounds that we start having a few away matches.

So are we gonna buy any decent players in before the season starts? Mascherano looks a smart defensive midfielder, things have gone quiet on the Diarra front, Torres would be great but I doubt we'll get him, Carrick could be a good long term replacement for Scholes. Now Ribery's turned us down will we go for a winger to challenge Ronaldo and Park or a playmaker like Riquelme to echo the Veron days? Thoughts?

Also, will David Jones break through big style this year? Will Rio and Heinze be the new central defence with Nev and Mik/Evra full backs? Is Nistelrooy staying?

 I'd say Van is out, though he did say in the past 24 hours that there was no real tiff between him and Ronaldo. Still, an argument with Fergie will see him out to the door. I just hope he bangs in a few goals in the World Cup to raise his price.

Midfield wise, the only truly decent player on the market available that I can see is Riquelme who after the tournament will cost a bomb. Again, Mascherano looks very good but is adopting an Argentianian midfield the best plan after what happened with Veron?

Riquelme is also Argentinian....

Veron was suited to the Premiership its just that no one ever used him in his perfered position. Shame Fergie didn't see the light earlier and got rid of Keane and kept Veron. United wouldn't be looking for that holding players for another season or two.

On a more positive note for United it looks like Milan and Juve could be in serious trouble. A few decent players may be available who previously we not.

Wheres Veron now though? There's no doubt he was a classy player but he's hardly hit the heights since. I think it was another case of a player not fulfilling his potential and I think Fergie was shrewd en ough to get rid of him when he did

Yet not shrewd enough to play him in his best position.  A position that had him as one of the greatest playmakers in world football.
Also not shrewd enough to get him for under £25 Million either.

I did mean to put in that Fergie wouldn't have been happy at the loss they made. What I was trying to say was that Ferguson saw that Veron wasn't really adapting that well to the Prem after the slow pace of Italian football, and was happy to get rid of him in a way. Veron looked like a bit of a "Billy big-time" to me and was content to just turn up for his obscene wages. I dont think he would have been filling Keanes role at any point. But as I said he was a cracking player (when he felt like it)

Well Fergie wouldn't play him there because of Keane even though it was the position Veron had played all his career.

he couldn't play with Keane. His best performances were when Keane was out. Remember 2-0 against the Arse when him and Phil Neville bossed it?

Scholsey = 15 goals a season for a decade
Carrick = 5 goals in entire career.

Things don't look to great at the moment do they?  Once again, it is United players who are having fingers pointed at them for Englands inevitable failure to perform on the world stage.  I can't believe Rooney will face the nation wide hatred that Beckham had to overcome in '98.  Afterall, everyone can conveniently direct their fury at Ronaldo.  If we are being honest,  Ronaldo was always going to be on his way out of Old Trafford sooner rather than later, but the events of the last few weeks seem to have speed up his departure.  Going by the quotes in the Marca newspaper last week, and Ronaldo's admittance to them after the game yesterday, the chances of him been in an United shirt next season look slim.  No doubt Fergie will want to keep hold of him, but the fact is that the kid has made his mind up and wants to go to Madrid.
How do other United fans think about this?  He is after all, one of the players Fergie was hoping to build the team around.  He could be briliant and just as influential as Rooney one week and utterly hopeless the next.  Personally i am pretty gutted about the way it has turned out.  Despite his inconsistency, he will probably be one of the best in the world in the near future and he does terrify opponents.  But at the same time he has completely thrown all the understanding the club and fans have shown him over the past three years back in our face.  There is also no way of knowing how Rooney will react to him if he stays next year.  United have lost important players before, and it can be argued that the likes of Beckham, Stam, Cantona and even the likes of Kanchelskis and Ince all brought more to the team.  Overall though, it is just pretty infuriating that Real Madrid can apparently take one of our star players with relative ease.

We dont seem to be any closer to bringing in any new players either.  Obviously we need two new midfielders but with possible departures of Ruud and Ronaldo, two world class players in these positions are needed as well.  Diarra seems unlikely, Riquleme has pretty much said no thanks, and Ribery wants to stay in France.

Arsenal are apparently interested in Carrick, which could prove problematic and Torres may or may not come.  We just dont seem to be getting any closer to plugging our gaps.  At this rate i can see us welcoming a number of good but not great world cup performers at low prices.  We have already been linked with the Ukranian winger (name escapes me) and Petit and Simao of Portugal.  Dont get me wrong, i dont think we need to fill the team of £30 million super stars, but it would be comforting to know we can still attract them.

So, is anyone else as concerned as i am?  At the moment i would be happy with a Carrick and Hargreaves (glad he shut the doubters up) duo.

Xenophobia? England fans are English, Hargreaves is English, how in anyway is it xenophobic for England fans not to like Hargreaves?

He's Canadian. And I was referring to the fact that he doesn't play in the Premiership, therefor people like Jenus are obviously better.

 I've been rating Riquelme for a while now. But the fact he'd rather stay in Villareal than come to United talks volumes about the current state of our football club.

 I think Riquelme is something of a special case after he was banished from Barca and has finally made friends and settled at a very family orientated club which is the lifeblood of the town. I think he feels wanted and settled and part of a family that is really making progress. I understand his need to be loved and stay where he is.

Who ever said Jenas was better? Infact I don't think any England fans wanted him in the squad either.

I don't know if Requelme's cut out for your league. Sadly, players of his ilk are never able to stamp their authority in England. They won't get as much time or space and the ball will spend a huge percentage of the game flying over their heads.
