Well 150KB certainly makes it a challenge. It was spoiled for choice before.

 I'll thank-you all to note that some of us are on dial-up and don't appreciate the insinuation we're living in the dark ages. So you got broadband? Well bully for you. Don't think that because you're on broadband that everyone else should follow suit or be damned. I'll certainly welcome this clamp-down on AV sizes.

A few other forums I read don't have avatar limits, I have seen avatars and sigs that are 9megs, one person even had the whole Land Of The Dead trailer in gif form.

Animated gifs are hosted on other sites not empire, the best avatars are big in size and are worth the download time. And if you don't like gifs or on dial up you can change you settings to not display avatars.

If anything the limit should be upped to 500k

Which is just bloody stupid as people are not there to watch the trailer, they are there to read your comments.

But avatars are a priveldge not a right. An avatar is only a small part of your online personality whilst massive file sizes just slow the site down. Like I said above it is the post you make that people are interested in, not the avatar. I find the smaller avatars more original and interesting to look at unlike longer ones. The more popular forums like RT don't have massive file sizes.

I abandoned my moving avatar long ago. Single pictures. Thats the way forward.

150k is quite sufficent.

It is pretty easy to turn off the AVs in a browser like Firefox - just select Tools > Options > Web Features and select Load Images From Originating Site Only. I can't imagine it's any more difficult in other browsers.

Having said that, though, some AVs have been getting a bit out of hand in terms of size of late, and there's been times when I've wondered if dial-up'rs can actually be bothered waiting for pages to load, caching or not. 150kb seems fair enough.

 I must confess I really don't see the point in large avs unless they're seriously creative.  If they're just a big clip from a film, then whoopy-bloody do.  I'm more than happy sticking with a single image I feel defines me more than a clip from one of my favourite films.  As for an av made from Land Of The Dead, well that's just fucking utterly ridiculous.  They could at least choose a decent Romero film.

Mental note - get zombie chow-down av.  Defines me v v well.

Well, Neth's utterly awesome M:I 3/Nelson one fits under the restrictions so I'm happy enough. 

BTW there is an option to turn off view avatars (smileys and all images in posts too) in My Empire -> My Preferences and look for speed settings, there are some check boxes.

For your information, I've done just fine on dial-up for nearly two years with no problems at all from my ISP, I had a bad experience with a broadband trial in that it was slower than dial-up and wouldn't stay connected for more than about ten minutes at a time and I'm content to surf the web at my own pace. The internet for me is a place to while away a little time at leisure with no great hurry.
 
As I have just been reliably informed, if you don't like the 150kb limit, go and visit Bloody Disgusting where apparently there are no AV size limits. Plus, I'm not there for you to antagonise me.
