Read something about this,Clooney allegedly in Takashi Shimura's role and yeah Jim Sheridan's long rumoured even more pointless remake of Ikiru is still a possibility as well.I'll never understand attempting to remake films that are faultless.

It's illogical for sure. Remake bad films into better ones for crying out loud - Krull would be better than the Lord of the Rings if someone happened to make in today's world. If not remake old films that would benefit with the standard of today's effects - both The Fly and The Thing highlight what can be done when you take a 50's B-Movie genre flick and turn it into tense and horrorfying sci-fi chiller. Imagine what The Dambusters would be like today with Lancaster's flying at 200mph at 60 feet over roof tops before blowing the Mohne and the Eder - now I'd like that to be remade. There are certainly movies out there that could benefit from being remade, yet Hollywood are all to happy to cash in on the name of known classics and make an absolute travesty of them. Why remake a film as perfect as the Seven Samurai?

(Unless it's the Magnificient Seven... which in someways highlights that the basic plot of Kurosawa's movie is spectacularly universal - maybe that's why a remakes being discussed, because the storyline is something that any generation can appreciate. Hell, even The Three Amigo's has many a nod in Kurosawa's knowing direction).

Nowadays they'd be more likely to remake The Thing rather than Thing From Another World

Not sure I'd want to see a remake of something like Dambusters though - there is a spirit to those old British black and white war movies that would be really hard to replicate.

 Actually if you look at the impressive worldwide box-office numbers pulled in by The Last Samurai, this could be a very good bet. Don't look at it as a sacrilegious thing, look at it as an hommage. I'll watch it!

It would be difficult to reproduce the old stiff upper-lippedness of the near accurate portrayals of Gibson or the tenacious spirit of good old Barnes Wallace, for sure. But for the spectacle of the attack on the Mohne, Eder and Sorbe dams would benefit greatly. Maybe they could splice new sequences together with the old footage to make a near perfect movie.

 There are definitely some things which should be left alone.  I presume they are hoping that the general cinema going public will be unfamiliar with the original.  It just goes to show the current unimaginative quality of Hollywood.

As stated there must be dozens of semi classics, not that well made but with a decent premise, which are ripe for remaking.  It is just sheer laziness and even arrogance that there is the feeling that they can remake and probably in their opinion improve upon the originals of such clasics as Seven Samurai.

Your guess is as good as mine, Timon. I like to think it's because a select few of us are special  Could be wrong though.

As for this remake - The Last Samurai is not a remake is it? Seven Samurai - a film that claims spectacular cinematic acclaim in its own right - does not need to be remade. It is what it is.

That's not the point. The point was The Last Samurai was a huge success worldwide, and with Clooney possibly starring (although he may be only producing), the premise might be a bit similar.
As I said, take it as an hommage. It is only a movie. Relax, people, it could be good.

It could be although I wouldn't hold out much hope,Donnie Yen & George Clooney ,but even if it is it's still going to be a pale imitation when compared to the original,just as The Magnificent Seven is.Ikiru's the same,there's nothing to neccesarily stop a remake being a reasonable film in it's own right,there are elements of Kurosawa's story that are tied up with Japanese culture but you could get around those while still keeping the basic premise which is universal,but it's just daft to remake something which is perfect.

Toho should of done a remake or sequel to mark the 50th Anniversary in 2004(sorry but I can't spell). They done it to Godzilla and I felt they miss out big time. Sadly now Toho isn't the powerhouse it use to be unless I am mistaken. Meaning they can't point their finger up at hollywood and say *fu'k off*.

Another thing I like to add, when a film become a success in the cinema, it depend on the first weekend takings. If it done bad in the first three days then the film won't be stay long in the cinema which is why we often get short cuts of films like Kingdom of Heaven, AVP, Dare Devil etc. 7 Samurai is a 3 hour film, a remake will chop a lot out or completely screw the story up to create something completely different.

Exactly. I'm sick of all these remakes to be honest. Why can't they simply create a remake of a film that was lacklustre to begin with? The storyline will be haphazard if they try and "modernise" Seven Samurai.

If anyone is still reading this thread. Do you mean that Hollywood actors are actually going to dress up like 16th century samurai and take the original characters names? Or will there be a very clever plot device to get half a dozen white people in to the medieval Japanese countryside ala Last Samurai?

 It's already been remade twice though, with cowboys and ants. I don't see why people get so upset about remakes; they're pointless, but why fight it, man? I mean, it's not Kurosawa didn't take western stories and make them Japanese.

A remake of Ikiru could be interesting; I'm surprised they haven't done it before. A version which ties more to Western sensibilities could actually be interesting.

 There's rumours that Tarrentino will write and direct. I like Tarrentino's work, but I hope the rumours are not true. Besides Tarrentino's speciality is dialogue, it just won't fit well, and this is too dramatic for QT to direct. Anyway , this film is a masterwork, you should never remake masterpieces. I mean you don't see artists remaking Picasso's masterpiece Guernica to please the yanks or the new generation of kids. Hollywood PLEASE don't touch anymore classics, even if they aint in english, or even if they're old or dated.

 Well Christopher McQuarrie's in charge and it's going to be set in the present - in Afghanistan - with Navy SEALs. And his brother is a SEAL, so I guess that part will be accurate.

 I heard Scott Mann (The Tournament) is now directing. Urgh. While that film was entertaining in a Crank-kind of way, I was hoping McQuarie would make a richer film.
