The Empire Forum DVD Review Club continues.... Each week I'll put up a DVD for review, we go on to discuss the DVD in question, and finally give the film a rating out of 10 and do the same for the extras. After 10 reviews we will have a final score for the DVD out of 100. I'll keep note of all the DVDs we have reviewed on a separate webpage, which you can find here: http://www.freewebs.com/empiredvdreviews/index.htm.

I will also take suggestions for which DVDs to review next (just PM me).

Up for review this week:

 Crash
You think you know who you are. You have no idea...

They all live in Los Angeles. And in the next 36 hours, they will collide. A car crash brings together many desperate residents of Los Angeles, often finding themselves defined in life along racial boundaries...

A breathtaking multi-layered story of interlocked lives, vignettes much in the vein of Robert Altman classics Short Cuts and Nashville, written and directed by the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Million Dollar Baby Paul Haggis.

Extras:

  • Audio commentary from director Paul Haggis, actor Don Cheadle and Bobby Moresco
  • 'Making Of' documentary
  • Introduction from director Paul Haggis
  • Music video
  • Theatrical trailer
Ok guys, let's know your thoughts on this DVD.
Remember to put a /10 rating for the film and a separate /10 rating for the extras.

Film: Whilst not as intelligent as it believes itself to be, it is often a thoughtful and saddening film. Indeed, Crash isn't a filmic story, it is a portrait of L.A., a city often divided apart. Beautifully filmed and with lots of superb performances, maybe it wasn't the Best Film of 2005, but it is a good one. 8/10.

Extras: Certainly, we get the right sense of what the film aims for. 7/10.

Film: Crash features several stunning scenes but taken as a complete piece it falls well short of the "Film Of The Year" status many (including the Oscars) have attributed to it. Dillon's racist cop was the stand out for me, those scenes were incredible but in the end it was a case of too much, too often, coming across as far too pretentious. Look racism... and more racism... all shot in a sort of clean, surreal, dreamy style. It looks great for the first half an hour or so but soon becomes a little too sickly and unreal. A little too much effort was put into making the film "important" as oppose to letting it develop naturally. Paul Haggis can write well, Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby is incredible but this film turned out into a bit of an ego trip 6.5/10

Extras: Only the commentary stands out as being worthy to be honest, nice introduction from Haggis but you would expect a little more with that kind of personal address to the fans. Nice menu design but overall a pretty dissapointing package. The Region 1 Directors cut package looks far better, but I don't think I want another copy of this film however good the extras may be.  5/10

The film is an excellent ensemble piece. Well acted, interesting storylines and some truly heartbreaking moments. This films makes me cry. Every time! Paul Haggis is definitely someone to watch.
    10/10

Extras: I found the commentary insightful however at times maybe just a little too self-congratulatory. The other extras are nothing special.
    6/10

Overrated but still highly watchable with great performances, blah, blah, blah!
    7/10
