hmmm, not a fan of speckled hen i'm afraid. I find it a little bitter tasting and it leaves quite an unpleasant taste in the mouth. i am willing to try any bath ales though, i've tried their barnstormer and it's smashing.

stonehenges' heel stone is another little beauty.

Yes their 'Gem' is also a favourite of mine. I used to adore the Smiles brewery but they are hard to track down.
Push comes to shove, Fullers London Pride is good

I would like to say I have tried this but i remember seeing it on HTV news:
According to York University, the world's strongest beer is Uncle Igor's Famous Falling Over Water, brewed by the Ross Brewery in Stokes Croft, Bristol, U.K.

It is served by the wine glass, beat that you northern wimps

I tend to drink ale only occasionally, when I do have it I tend to opt for something from Samuel Smith, a Taddy Porter or a Nut Brown Ale.

Interesting, but I'll decline.  We stick to quad-distilled whiskey.

A decent pint of Bass is hard to beat but must admit to being a bit partial to Timothy Taylor Landlord.

Marstons Pedigree is also nice and I don't mind Fullers London Pride (got absolutely wankered on it when I was on the canal boats one year!!!)

Pedigree needs keeping properly tho or it smells of rotten eggs. Which is nice.

Landlord is truly a good beer too. HUntingdon IPA is also good.

Listen up Ted, there is a working Smiles Brewery tap in Bristol at the top of Colston Street where it meets Park Row, very near the centre of town.  It's a beauty of a pub.  Small, wooden and cosy - with Smiles on tap!

Mayhap I'll see you in there one day.

I like a drop of Theakston's 'Old Peculiar' myself.

Best I've ever had was a pint called Pale Rider.  It was from a brewery near Manchester apparantly and was so good that at a beer festival with over 200 ales I still had 4 pints of this stuff....then it ran out :( .

Freely available I'd have to go with Bitter and Twisted or (when it's a really good one) Deuchars IPA.

Is it wrong that I want a pint at 9am?

Can I just say that Bass is a weaker, tasteless and weaker version of the West Country's 2nd best bitter, 6x. Brewed in Devizes and like Adge Cutler once warbled "There ain't no suprises living in Devizes" not that adds anything to the price of fish

Well I visited 3 time Somerset CAMRA Pub of The Year The Halfway House in Pitney last night for a meal and to see what they had on offer ale-wise. Let's just say, I didn't leave dissapointed. With at least 8 ales on tap, there was plenty to choose from. To kick things off, I started with Bath Spa. As I've said previously in this thread, I'm willing to try more Bath Ales after tasting the delightful Barnstormer. Sadly though, it didn't quite match my expectations. A little on the weak side and very bitter. On the other hand, my old man loved it. Secondly, I tried Archer's Orchid. That was more like it, a much darker ale than the Spa, with a more seasonal taste. Then I moved onto a beer called Yellow Hammer, though I don't know which brewery that was from. To my annoyance, it was a very poorly kept pint - the price you pay for keeping such a wide range of ales on tap I suppose -  and when I took it back to the bar, I was told that was the last of it, so I settled for the ever-reliable Crop Circle.  This experience soured an otherwise delightfull evening. But it's always nice to get out and about and get stuck into some real ale, even if they're not always to your liking.

An interesting summary Rev of what seems to be an excellent front row selection of ales.
I was in the same situation last night. Bellringer to the left of me, Spa to the right, Danish Dynamite winking at me, a green ale (yes it is green) egging me on and 6x in front of me I just didn't know what to go for.
And thus, I ordered a bottle of Weston's Organic Cider and this my friend, was a welcome change. A cold, crisp, sweet and delicious plethora of apples on your palate was the most refreshing change. I think therefore my days of bitter will be put on hold till the summer has passed us by. May I suggest you too take uo the apple reigns and have a delightfully intoxicated summer too

Black Sheep Riggwelter

Someone with taste!

Funnily enough, I tried some of this last week, along with Black Sheep original, and Black Sheep Emmerdale, but Riggwelter was most certainly the best out of the three.

I like Black Sheep but never tried Riggwelter.  I love London Pride, and I'm partial to a drop of Flowers.

I remember about ten years ago Cains brought out an elderflow ale.  Coldn't get enough of  that stuff.

Not sure if Brains counts as a real ale but I love Brains Dark and Brains SA.

And yes, while Riggwelter is a belter of a pint, I think the Original is a true session beer.

Quite. Infact, I do enjoy a cider now and then. It just so happens that the old man has worked in apples all his life and knows what's what when it comes to scrumpy. Of the more manistream ciders, I enjoy a nice cold, dry Thatchers Gold to really hit that thirst. Also, Westons make some corkers and Gaymers isn't to be sniffed at. If we're talking farmhouse though, you really can't beat Burrow Hill. Smashing.

Magners? Ice? What - ice in cider? Give over.

Quite right too, sir.  You don't put ice in ale or lager, why should a fine cider suffer the ignomy.  Just keep the fuckin' thing in the fridge.

Thatchers Spartan (rare as rocking horse poo round my neck of the woods) or a bottle of Gaymers Stewley are other fine recommendations to add to those.

What?  Not a cider thread.  Oh.  OK.

And not so widely is Traquair Jacobite Ale, this is brewed by a small brewery in the Scottish Borders and if you ever get the chance to try it i'd highly recomend it.
Here is the link for their site if you are interested http://www.traquair.co.uk/brewery.html

I'm not all that clued up on the real ales, but my dad is and I try the occasional one from his selections!  My favourites so far are:

Hobgoblin
Batemans XXX
Old Speckled Hen
Spitfire

Spitfire is very popular when we have it on at the pub where I work.

At the moment we have two Jennings' ales on- Cumberland, and Redbreast.
Although I don't drink the stuff myself, I'm told the Redbreast is very good.

Other popular ones we've had were The Reverand Thomas, and Cragrat
