Brick is a fantasticly original movie - something I have not had the pleasure of seeing and anticipating for a long while. I still cannot believe that the starring role was Joseph Gordon-Levitt, from 3rd Rock from the Sun and 10 Things I Hate About You fame! It's an incredible piece of acting from all involved and although in some places I was completely lost, I was still waiting with bated breath for next moment. I believe it improves upon a second viewing, chiefly because you gain a different perspective knowing the general skeletal structure of the plot and the final outcome. The Sky's the limit for Joseph and up-and-coming writer, Rian Johnson.

Bought this one on DVD Monday and it gets better with repeat viewings.

Got a feeling people are going to be talking about it for a while...

I thought Brick was a great movie and it really lived up to my expections as I had been told so many good things about it.
I love how different it was and I thought the acting was excellent, I also loved the way the movie was shot, I was shocked that it was the directors first movie.
I'd give it 4 stars out of 5 as well.

With a feel that combines the updated dialogue of the Maltese Falcon and the style and direction of Chinatown, BRICK for me lacked that final something.A good film somewhere lost between the 3 and 4 stars it deserves. If you want a story lost in mystery vwatch Chinatown, if you want the cool sharp dialog travelling from where it belongs visit the Maltese Falcom. Brick...It's No Donnie Darko...

I think i've just watched one of the coolest, smartest films i've seen in ages. Brick oozes quality and mystery and the lead guy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt gives one of the best performances i've seen all year. This film is played by youngsters but is firmly aimed at a mature audience, and audience who like to have to think about their films and not have everything spelled out for them. This film urges you to pay attention and the sudden bursts of violence are truely unexpected and shocking, but also very satisfying in the fact that the almost geeky looking college boy suddenly becomes something much more darker and sinister. I dont understand why this is being compared to Donnie Darko as it's completely different, however it is completely drenched in that unnerving mystery feel that Donnie Darko handled so well. For a first time director this film is quite simply amazing, it hits all the right spots and doesnt hold back where most films probably would.

im a sucker for something which walks off the beaten track of mainstream cinema. this is a very smart film which manages to capture the original atmosphere of the old chandler book and film noirs of the 40's but keeps it fresh. even though its an unusual setting for a film of its type, with a little stretch of the imagination you can easily become involved in its world. its interesting how, even though it is a neo noir film, it rarely uses the expected dark shadowy visuals. its dialogue is so slick that you cant help but feel your in a new york back ally somewhere dealing with educated and street wise drug dealers. yet it might be the dialogue that leads to the film to not quite delivering its final punch. the toung twisting street jive dialogue makes it very hard to enjoy the final twist and the events leading to the end move to fast for such a complicated script. although the idea is amazingly fresh and the film throughout is stylish and well delivered, the ending needs a few rewinds inorder to catch the explanation and could have done with a few visual aides. afterall a restricted narrative has to work with the audience and not against them to the bitter end. although this flaw does little to detract from the spectacular enjoyment of the journey as a whole it sadly looses its final star in my rating.

Brick surprised me alot.

I still can't get over that it was done for under £500,000! The film looks like it cost a few million, always a sign of a great director. The lighting and cinematography is fantastic and looks more gorgeous then alot of high budget spectacles.

The acting is where it really comes together, it's what sets Brick apart from most other films that i have seen this year. The actors take on the characters and become their characters. It is a rare thing, but it happens in this film. But of course alot of it is down to the script which had been written with care, love and attention and it shows in the film. Yes, the dialogue is slightly hard to follow at times and on first viewing i was confused by some scenes but this does not in anyway pull you out from Brick's world. It just makes it the more interesting, and imporves spectacularly on repeat viewings. Brick demands to be seen more than once.

Brick is of course derivative of film noir like the Maltese Falcon and some aspects of Miller's Crossing and Rian Johnson even mentions the influence those films had on Brick on the DVD commentary. But what Rian does, instead of trying to improve upon the genre he takes it out and creates a whole new world for it to breathe in. Which means that at first it's a little hard to get round, but soon enough your be wondering why you never bothered checking out the film earlier.

The score, wow! just wow! It is definitely not your usual film score as the music is made up of different instruments and day to day objects. But, much like the film, while it really shouldn't have worked it did. Original is the best compliment i can give the soundtrack. The soundtrack juxtaposes with the images so well, creating a whole new atmospheric world that feels lived in and most importantly, real.

This is not just the best indie film of the year. Brick is one of the best indie films ever made and i have no doubt that it will be found in a few years time as a real masterpeice of the 21st century. It is just a shame it won't get discovered earlier.

Also it must be mentioned that the DVD is fantastic with lots of great extras that really go into the making of Brick.

Really impressed with this film....
It kinda came out of nowhere and was fresh and original, with nice ideas and concepts. It brought together traditional themes and styles, whacked it in a modern setting and developed a cool language. Maybe you cant decipher every word, but it sounds damn cool....
I thought the acting was really good. They seemed to act as though they knew they were in a film, that sometimes you see in older films, but i dont think that was a bad thing.
Loved the music too.

I was really excited about seeing this film (love JGL in Mysterious Skin, plus someone described Brick as being David Lynch-esque) but was completely disappointed. I thought it was like watching one of my mates art-school films...when they were about 16.

Haha, I apologise for my poor critique here, My arguments are rubbish, I know, but I really did dislike this film.

Enormously overated. The sub-bugsy malone analogy is right. JGL struts around like an adolescent Lee Marvin. Just not convincing or engaging.

I enjoyed it, the cross genre was very clever, esspecially the scene in the v.p' office, priceless. well cast, and well portrayed by some of the more unknown actors. personally i thought it could of been a bit more twisted and played more on the noir aspect with smart lighting, but im just a first year film student so who am i to judge. :)

Excellent movie had heard so much buzz about it on the net finally got round to catching it on DVD and for once the buzz generated is deserved. Superbly acted Gordon Levitt is a star on the rise take notice Hollywood. The language was a bit hard to to catch on to at times but once the characters and the plot are established its an enjoyabel ride, especially watching all the villans of each clique get there cumuppance. I love the way Brendan can blend in to these cliques even though he despises them all his love for Emily seems so genuine and that ending OMG is it his kid or what? I wanna know what the horrible word that bitch whispered in his ear was! 5 star entertainment so original can't wait for Levitt's and Johnson's next films

Brick is a film that splits the audience down the middle. You either love it's visionary direction and language, or you hate it.
It's not easy to watch, and it does indeed require some concentration from the viewer, but that's certaninly no bad thing, and if you can untangle the film on it's first viewing, every rewatch it improves.
Gordon Levitt's character is a geeky dream, both intelligent and good with his fists, he holds the movie together perfectly, rarely off-screen,
Lukas Haas' Pin is also an intriguing figure, scary at first, but less so as the story progresses, he makes a great villain, vunerable yet genius.
But all the charcters have a chance to shine, from the OTT Tugger, to the femme fatale, Laura, and the script is sharp and clever- the scene where Brendan whips off his shoes during a chase scene to sneak up on his pursurer is a paticular treat,
So, if you want a clever reinvention of film noir, while still sticking to it's roots, pick up Rian Johnson's Brick. IT's a treat.

It comes accross as a script written by a film school graduate who hoped that his core audience wouldn't have seen Blue Velvet or Chinatown. Tis merely a poor imitation of far superior films and has a script that would be far better suited to a stage production.

The 'VP'(I forget his name) was in Iron Eagle. Now That was the real golden age of cinema.

Really loved this movie.  I love these types of movies.  I am glad to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt making it pass his TV show.  I am looking forward in seeing him in KillShot and The Look Out.  Both are coming out soon.

maybe becuase i'm a teenager but the slang didn't hinder my understand of the admittedly twisting plot. In fact, it probably enhanced it with a sense of realism in a vaguely surreal film. What I love so much abut Brick is that there are very few 'american high school' cliches and these are toned down further by the gorgeous colour and lighting. There is no cras lurid light to accentuate the beautiful teens and definitely no pop soundtrack. The beautiful xylophone refrain throughout echos of the sublime Pan's Labyrinth refrain, in its subtle yet pertinent addition to key scenes. It certainly inspired me to start making films again (the last two films i watched were depressingly out of my league in effects, but certainly not in anything else). Brick is certainly the best teen drama i've seen, inside or of the movies

Only two times before this have I seen such assured work from a new filmmaker (Eraserhead and Reservoir Dogs). Brick is fresh, imaginitive, engrossing, engaging, and stylish to boot. The noir-speak coming out of the mouths of highschool kids could have seemed gimmicky, but it's treated as such a given that you accept it immediately. Johnson's clever script is matched by his solid direction, Gordon-Levitt proves himself a star in the making, and Lukas Haas practically steals the movie as The Pin (a 26 year old drug dealer who lives in his mother's basement)! Movies like this, and A Scanner Darkly and The Science of Sleep are the reasons I love film, but they get so little recognition. So if you're sick of Pirates 3 or Shrek 3 or Die Hard 4 or another Goddamn penguin movie, then I suggest you check this out.

Just watched it last night on Film Four and what was it on after... Bugsy Malone! The scene in the Pin's House with his mother doting on him made me think of the comparison. BM was a funny film but it would have gone from slapstick to noir if the cast had been 10 years older. It was a very clever and enjoyable film, although i think a second viewing with subtitles would enhance it even further! Joseph Gordon Levitt was superb.
