 Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell - the book is actually six seperate stories each written in a different prose. It basically reads like an anthology of stories. However each story is interconnected with the previous and the next story and the overall theme. Brilliantly concieved and briliantly executed. This is one book I'll definately be picking up again. Highly recommended.

I've read many of the books mentioned so far, this is the best book (6 books) I have ever had the pleasure of reading.
A Song of Ice and Fire - George RR Martin
This series is not yet finished but so far it could give the Amtrak Wars a run for it's money.
The Wasp Factory - Iain Banks
Sick, twisted and brilliant.  Many of his books deserve to make a 'great' list but I see this as the first and foremost.

Any list is complete without the most magical book ever written: One Hundred Years of Solitude, by Gabriel García Márquez. Everything about it it's perfect, the characters, the story, the world created by the author. Just a masterpiece.
Other books I love:
- Madame Bovary, Gustave Flaubert
- Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury
- The Red and The Black, Stendhal
- A portrait of the artist as a young man, James Joyce

 My two favourite books---------

The Time Traveller's Wife - Beautiful, heartbreaking and, crucially, interesting, The Time Traveller's Wife has   ridiculous ideas up its sleeve, yet they are written with an air of high realism.

Life Of Pi - One of the most magical books I have ever read. I do not mean magical as in Harry Potter magical, but as in uplifting and wise.

Time Traveller's Wife ranks higher than Life Of Pi. But both of them are waaaaaaaaaaaay better than your average Bestseller.

 Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency - Douglas Adams. Funny, moving & thought-provoking masterpiece.
The Andromeda Strain - Michael Crichton. Dry, but fascinating sci-fi story.
Raise The Titanic - Clive Cussler. Daft, but outrageously exciting adventure.

 Can I throw in a mention for Smiley's People by John Le Carre.  I read it at an age when I was changing what I was reading, and this book was definately the turning point.

Until I find you by John Irving, which in my personal opinion was a fantastic story.  With a truly uplifting ending. 

LA Confidential by James Ellroy. Great book. So many characters, so many storylines all culminating into the one fantastic ending.  And the exceptionaly distrubing death of Trashcan Jack. I very nearly cried when Trashcan took the Big Goodbye.

The Getaway by Jim Thompson. Quite simply the best crime novel ever

Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk. A great novel about self destruction among other things.

One of the most exciting and enchanting novels I have ever read. A great childrens book

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl 
another fantastic children's book that I still read today
'Charlie picked it up and tore off the wrapper...and suddenly...from underneath the wrapper...there came a brilliant flash of gold.
Charlie's heart stood still.
''It's a Golden Ticket!'' screamed the shopkeeper, leaping about a foot in the air'

Less than Zero by Bret Easton Ellis
A superb novel about overindulgence and the casual nihilism that comes with youth and money.
' 'Where are we going?' I asked.
'I don't know,' he said. 'Just driving.'
'But this road doesn't go any where,' I told him.
'That doesn't matter.'
'What does?' I asked, after a little while.
'just that we're on it, dude,' he said. '

I have to add:

Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates - Tom Robbins
A hilarious outlandish tale of a CIA agent who is a walking contradiction. He is obsessed with the preservation of innocence, but desperately wants to deflower his 14 year old stepsister. He is anti-religion but finds himself falling for a nun. An exciting and insane story - definitely worth reading.

I just want to add Guitar Girl by Sarra Manning. It's a seriously good and uplifting book about a girl who's in a band. She gets picked up by a huge record company and is thrusted into fame. But she soon realises that she doesn't want any of it (silly girl).
I'm serious, this book changed my life, so READ IT because it's so beautiful.

 The New Rulers of The World by John Pilger - a disgusting damning inditement of the policies of  Western 'civilisation'. Everyone in the bloody world should read this book.

Also Consider Phlebas by Iain M Bainks - a fantastic space opera.

It won the whitbread prize for first fiction novel. It deals with a girl coming to terms with the fact that shes gay in a devout christian community, but its totally not what you expect. When they try to cast out her "unnatural passions" with an exorcism...oh how I laughed

The Scarlett Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorn :

Its often said its a bit boring, but you only realise as you read it that your imagination develops along with the story.

 my fave book of all time has to be COSMIC BANDITOS by A.C Weisbecker

a really entertaining book about a chap living in the south american jungle who receives a suitcase full of books on quantum mechanics etc. ( which his bandit friend nicked from a tourist) and who decides to travel to meet the original owner to discuss his theories, taking his bandit friends and pet dog High Pockets with him for the ride!! lots of fun ensues incl.drug trafficking and partying

really well written, a hilarious book!!

there was talk a few years ago that this would be a film with john cusack and benicio del toro as the two main characters (i think of del toro's character in 'fear and loathing' and think it would be amazing!)

i just hope it is made as a movie!!
