You know...and I can't quite believe I'm saying this, but after seeing Sunshine I think Evans would be a pretty good choice for Kirk. Even though I am not a fan of FF4, I did think he brought a sense of fun to the proceedings - and now I know he could handle the heavier side of the drama as well.

If you listen to the Filmspotting podcast (www.filmspotting.net) you can hear an interview with Danny Boyle about Sunshine. It's a fantastic interview simply because Boyle is such a great talker but the thing that made me reply to your post Rgirvan44, is the praise that Boyle lavishes on Evans in the interview and I agree with him.

With the awesome casting of Spock I am now officially excited for Trek XI it helped seeing Nimoy and Quinto together.

i've a feeling Abrams will be aiming for a return tto the big scale epicness of Treks I-IV with this one..

dumping the two hour episode feel of the TNG films...

regarding Kirk - I wonder if Leo Dicaprio would be considered? He might be a big Trek fan who would do it for a pay decrease if he liked the script?

Work with me on this people ok but for some reason i keep thinking that Zac Efron from the Musical flick "Hairspray" would make a good young Kirk . Cant put my finger on it but there is someting about his face maybe if he added a few pounds . He is young enough and in my opinion it could work .

I think only a small section of the film takes place at the Acadmey and the film basically covers that, Spock and Kirk's various seperate assignments and then them getting reunited aboard the Enterprise and Elfron looks barely old enough to shave let alone command a starship.

In my opinion.

It's been well established that Spock was on board the Enterprise for around 10 years before he met Kirk.

Although he is currently shooting Valkyrie with confirmed Trekkie Bryan Singer, JJ Abrams is apparantly trying to get The Crusier to cameo in Star Trek as Enterprise captain Christopher Pike.

According to Trek lore, Pike was James T. Kirk's predecessor as captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise and Mr. Spock's first commanding officer. Pike was the captain in the original and unaired TV pilot, "The Cage," where he was portrayed by the late Jeffrey Hunter.

When NBC balked at the cerebral nature of the show and wanted a new, action-heavy pilot filmed, Hunter was unavailable so a new character, Captain Kirk, was created. The unaired pilot was later recycled for the two-part first season episode "The Menagerie," which saw Spock court-martialed for trying to take a disfigured Pike back to Talos IV, the setting of "The Cage." In Trek lore, Spock served with Pike for about a decade so his inclusion in the new film is sort of needed.

GN has learned from a trusted source that director J.J. Abrams would like to have an A-list star cameo in his forthcoming big-screen reboot of Star Trek. According to our source -- whose scoops have always panned out in the past -- Abrams is wooing his Mission: Impossible III star Tom Cruise to cameo in Star Trek ... as Captain Christopher Pike!

Cruise's name first surfaced last fall as a possibility for a role in Trek, but Cruise spokesman Arnold Robinson advised TrekMovie.com at the time, "That story is not true." There was still bad blood between Cruise and Trek studio Paramount at that time, but in recent months Sumner Redstone, the Viacom honcho who ousted Cruise, has softened his rhetoric, leaving the door open for reconciliation. A Cruise cameo in Trek, however, would be a favor to Abrams and not to Paramount.

Again, we stress that Abrams is said to only be talking to Cruise at this point; that doesn't mean Cruise will actually agree to do it. And just so you know, Cruise's camp balked at our March scoop for the comedy Men, which Variety confirmed last month. Cruise's last big-screen cameo was in Austin Powers in Goldmember.

As well as this the casting list was also leaked recently showing that the filmmakers are looking to cast Scotty, Sulu and Uhura.....no idea why. Surely they wouldn't meet Kirk, Spock and McCoy till later UNLESS they're only in the last act of the film.

[JAMES KIRK] 23-29 Handsome,cocky self assured and earnest. Great physical condition. 6 ft or less

[LEONARD (BONES) MCCOY] -28-32 Medic on the Enterprise. Smart, clever and a bit danger-loving. Dark hair, blue eyes.

[UHURA] 25ish -African American. Brilliant, beautiful, heroic and FUN!, Uhura is almost tom-boyish - as if she grew up in a house full of brothers.

[SULU] 25-32 -Asian American male (preferably Japanese). Helmsman on the Enterprise. Extremely fit, capable and dedicated. A bit of a wildcat.

[MONTGOMERY(SCOTTY) SCOTT] -28-32 a brilliant ship�s engineer. Must be able to do a flawless Scottish accent!

McCoy - danger loving? He hates transporters! Uhura, a bit of a tomboy? Really? Sulu the wildcat? Erm......

One wonders where they're going with this.....

J.J. Abrams has cast Russian-born Anton Yelchin (Alpha Dog, Charlie Bartlett) as Pavel Chekov in Paramount Pictures' Star Trek. Chekov is the Russian-born navigator of the USS Enterprise under the command of James T. Kirk.

Yelchin will join Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy, who will both play the role of Mr. Spock. Casting is under way in New York and London for Kirk, Bones, Uhura, Sulu, Scotty, the film's villain and the Federation captain Christopher Pike. Abrams, who will direct the untitled film, is expected to sign bigger-name actors for the latter two parts.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the story line is believed to chronicle the early days of the Enterprise crew during their time at Starfleet Academy.

Chekov was played by Walter Koenig on the original "Star Trek" TV series, and he is a key member of the Enterprise crew.

Abrams is producing the Christmas Day 2008 tentpole through his Paramount-based Bad Robot. Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci wrote the screenplay and will executive produce along with Bryan Burk and Damon Lindelof.

Chekov eh? Interesting seeing as he'd didn't join Trek till Season 2 of the Original Series. Could he turn up in the second half of the film or are we meant to believe all the primary characters were at the Acdamey at the same time?

I have two things to say, neither of which concerns the casting of Chekov:

1) That article states the film is, 'as yet untitled' but I'm sure I read/heard somewhere that it's simply being titled 'Star Trek'. Was I hallucinating or something?

B) What is the logic in releasing this on Christmas Day of all days? Surely ever cinema will be closed, thus giving the film a miniscule opening day figures? I remember last Christmas trying to order take-out but every Indian and Chinese I rang was closed.

1) Star Trek is the current working title but I'm sure they'll add something to it to seperate it from the other films/series

2) I've never understood studios and their decisions when it comes to release dates.
