Unfortunately yes, but you wouldn't know it to look at them.

I'm not a big Star Trek fan, but the prospect and choice of director for this sequel/reboot sounds interesting. And on the completely superficial side, the teaser poster is pretty spiffy.

Rumours, rumours, rumours. Don't you love them? The latest is that;

- William Shatner & Leonard Nimoy say they still have not been contacted, but are still open to appearing in the film
- JJ Abrams said he always thinks of Keri Russell when working on a new project and thinks she would make an ‘awesome’ Klingon
- There are rumours that Ryan Gosling is interested in playing Kirk and that Heroes star Zachary Quinto is being pursued for Spock. Oh and Vin Diesel for Kirk's Klingon adversary Kor.

Bryan Singer talks Trek XI (and Superman 2)

http://trekmovie.com/2007/05/12/interview-bryan-singer-on-trek/

wonder if Singer had done Trek if he'd be doing TOS prequel thats happening or another TNG film (considering his Patrick Stewart connection)

oh well...thought it might be as its the same ship design as those rather cool fakes...

has anyone seen any of the new remastered eps of the original series? (with new CGI FX replacing the old ones)

heres an e.g. of some:
http://trekmovie.com/2007/05/12/errand-of-mercy-screenshots/
http://trekmovie.com/2007/02/10/the-doomsday-machine-screenshots/
http://trekmovie.com/2007/03/31/the-tholian-web-screenshots/
http://trekmovie.com/2006/11/19/space-seed-remastered-fx-video/
http://trekmovie.com/2006/11/13/mirror-mirror-screenshots-and-video/
http://trekmovie.com/2007/02/17/amok-time-screenshots/

They take images and FX established from the movies and future tv shows and put them in the original (e.g Vulcan in Amok Time is now like Vulcan from Star Trek III)

Basically it makes the FX look more like 'Enterprise' =- no doubt they'll be on dvd soon...

I'm curious - but not so curious as to buy them all over again..(i still have TOS on 26 vhs - 3 eps per tape...took me years to complete and each one was about 12.99!)

I'm torn on those. They look good but TOS is all about 60's kitsch. When I watch the old series, I revel in the effects of the time and the amusing FX. To have a CGI Enterprise cruising around just looks wrong especially when compared to the 'man in suit' aliens and polystherene sets.

An interesting experiment but I'll keep my old school editions on DVD thanks very muchy.

I don't think the CGI versions look that great to be honest although I am interested to see a couple of complete episodes.

Why do they actually look better than a computer game? To a certain extent it
reminds me of the new Star Wars - you lose the models and lose a bit of realism.

yeah i think that the 1980s SF films like the original Star Wars and the Star Treks with Kirk and Co have far more realistic space FX than todays CGI space ships...

Imagine if they hadnt done away with actual models...they'd look even more amazing now

Robert Orci, screenwriter of the upcoming live-action Transformers movie, told IGN that his next project Star Trek is scheduled to go into production in November.

"It shoots in November," Orci said during an exclusive interview with IGN. "We're in preproduction right now and just started. We're casting and hoping to have somebody by Comicon -- we'll find out. The script is written, and [it comes out] Christmas '08."

Though Orci remained mum about the film's plot, he said he is confident that Star Trek XI will satisfy nonfans and longtime Trek watchers alike.

"We've sworn an oath to not really divulge anything," he said, "but if you're a fan who's been tracking a lot of questions about people's histories and about the history of Starfleet, there's various gaps in the canon that if you were to get online and sample what people would want to see, you'd see some overlap in terms of what any fan who knows Trek would see. But the flipside of it is we want to make sure that this movie is absolutely for nonfans as well. In a way it's going to be two different movies -- if you're a fan, you're going to see a different movie. If you're a fan, you're seeing the black stripes of the zebra, and if you're not a fan you're going to see the white stripes. That was actually an amazing challenge, to see if that was even possible, and I think, hope, pray that we did it."

When asked about the challenge of creating a realistic backdrop for the show's fantastic concepts, Orci said he and co-screenwriter Alex Kurtzman want to stay true to the established Trek language, while creating a palpable reality for franchise newcomers.

"Since the white stripes of it are an introduction to a broad audience, we absolutely want to sell the reality of it," he said. "That's again partly through some of the things you're saying in terms of the technology. We love the technobabble, but again it comes through meeting the characters in an appropriate way such that you start to discover what the universe is by the time they've already won you over. That I think gets you farther to feeling it's real than those explanations, even though we have plenty," he added with a laugh.

Orci also said that he and Kurtzman didn't deliberately tailor their script for director J.J. Abrams (Mission: Impossible III), but their sensibilities converged anyway.

"Well, Trek we didn't know that J.J. [Abrams] was going to direct it," Orci said. "He was only going to produce it, so we wrote it just kind of with what we would want to see. J.J. has a very similar sensibility just in terms of how we approach material, so in a way we knew we didn't have to try and tailor it to him. If it was something that we truly loved, we hoped that he would too, and it turned out that way. We weren't writing it for him specifically, even though we were hoping he would direct it; we made sure there was enough stuff in there to lure him in [laughs]."

Location scouting in Iceland!

The Trek crew are currently scouting multiple locations in Iceland along with people from the studio.  The article states it could be ‘bigger than Flags of our Fathers,’ the recent Clint Eastwood film that did much of its shooting in Iceland. The black sand beaches (pictured right) of Iceland stood in for Iwo Jima (Japan would not allow the shooting of battle scenes on the island).

If this pans out it would make the new ‘Star Trek’ the first film in the franchise to film outside the US. In fact almost all location shooting on Trek films has been limited to locations within a few hours drive from Los Angeles.

Thats a bad idea, since they obviously tried to recreate the wrath of khan experience with Nemesis and look how that turned out.

i think the writer is impling he wants to recreate the quality of that movie - the experiance of seeing it in the cinemas -  not the actual story like Nemesis did...they'll know that doing that was a mistake.

If they revert back to the designs of films 2 - 6, the ships and uniforms, then I am there opening day. I know the teaser poster hinted at the 60's designs but I am afraid that may come off as rather silly in todays world. The 2 - 6 films captured that universe in way that other TV shows and films have failed to do.

Also make the damn Enterprise a model - the scenes of it docked in the first few films were stunning.

i think thats what they'll do - combine the original show designs of the ships, uniforms, phasers etc with the movie (2-6) designs

Also think that it'll draw from Wrath of Khan abit storywise - I dont mean a crummy obvious re-creation (like Nemesis) but a prequel to it - drawing on the backstory hinted at in it - Kirks Kobiashi Maru, Carol Marus etc - and of course all the stuff touched on in the 60s series - Lt Kirk aboard the USS Farragut, Pike - (how about Jim Cavizal?), Gary Mitchell etc

the writers know Khans everyones favourite film and the only trek film that can be realistically be mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Star Wars (originals), Blade Runner, Terminator, Aliens etc so i imagine they will reference it - using it as a springboard.

William Shatner has revealed that his former Star Trek co-star Leonard Nimoy will appear in J.J. Abrams' forthcoming Star Trek movie but that he won't be in it.

Shatner, who portrayed Captain James T. Kirk opposite Nimoy's Mr. Spock in the classic TV series and its subsequent big-screen incarnations, made the revelation during a videotaped interview available at his ShatnerVision site via MySpace.com.

Shatner recalled, "There's a Star Trek movie and I called Leonard. I said, 'Leonard, have you heard?' He said, 'Yes, I have.' I said, 'What do you mean?' He said, 'I've read the script.' I said, 'Is it a good script?' He says, 'Yeah.' I said, 'Am I in it?' And there was a pause. He said no and then he began to laugh. I went through the phone as I grabbed him by the throat. He's in it. I'm not in it."

The Shat's revelation confirms online rumors that Nimoy's Spock will cameo in the film, perhaps bookending a story told via flashback.

Rumor has it that official Star Trek casting announcements may be made at this month's Comic-Con.

It kind of makes sense as Vulcans live a lot longer and Kirk is 'dead' depending when Spock is having this flashback but you have to have The Shat on board. I did hear he'll have behind the camera involvement though...

well i guess The Shat had his send off to Star Trek in the shitty Generations…without Nimoy…

now looks like Nimoy will do the same in this one (which will probably be great)....without Shats

Hope they work Shats in somehow though..

You cant have Trek (original) without Shatner in there somewhere.

IGN seems to think so.

Official casting announcements for J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movie are expected to be made at this month's Comic-Con in San Diego, but a report online claims that the role of Vulcan science officer Mr. Spock has already been filled.

According to CHUD.com, Heroes villain Zachary Quinto is "in negotiations" to play Spock. Quinto, who has been mentioned as a fan favorite for the role in many forums, first popped up on the Trek radar last year.

In a December interview with Pittsburgh's Post-Gazette, Quinto said, "I missed the Superman Returns boat, so I'm angling for Star Trek. People are constantly telling me I bear some resemblance to Leonard Nimoy."

Quinto joked with the paper about asking his Heroes co-star Greg Grunberg, Abrams' long-time friend and Alias alumnus, to get him an audition. "Maybe Sylar should tell Greg, 'I promise I won't kill you if you get me an audition.' ... We'll see what happens."

IGN asked Quinto's reps for confirmation, denial or comment on the Trek rumor. We'll let you know what they have to say!

If Quinto is indeed cast in Star Trek then that would require heavy retooling of the Heroes filming schedule as Star Trek's fall shoot would conflict with the series.

We reported a few months back that Oscar winner Adrien Brody was Paramount's choice to play Spock, but it's entirely possible that he could have passed on the project by now. His reps at CAA did not return IGN's call for comment by time of publish.

Inspired casting if you ask me. Quinto really looks the part and can do stoic and emotionless very well.

But the big question is who can replace Shatner? I did like the Ryan Gosling rumours....
