Sooo Karl Urban has apparently let slip who Cumberbatch is playing, of course it might not be true but he seemed to say it at the end of a long day of interviews for Dredd.

*Gary Mitchell *

If that's true - that's awesome!

Interesting. Orci denied G.M. was in the movie a few weeks ago: http://trekmovie.com/2012/06/25/orci-team-talking-about-potential-star-trek-tv-show-rules-out-some-sequel-characters-more/
But since Orci wouldn't be the first to lie about something like this, it may very well be true.

Additionally there is a comic series, in which old TOS episodes are beeing reimagined within the new universe and this character already died in #2. Of course this doesn't have to mean anything, but I'm not 100% convinced yet.

I really need to rewatch TOS, cos I have no idea who Gary Mitchell is.

Sounds like he should be in Eastenders.

Even odder, it's actually Star Trek Into Darkness, without the punctuation. As in, the trek is heading in to darkness.

Probably should have just called it Into Darkness, and promoted it as the new ST movie, and take a leaf from TDK+TDKR on that score

Star Trek into Darkness sounds more cheesy than foreboding to me, and can't help feeling Star Trek: Darkness was heading for being the title until someone notice the acronym is STD.

From the sounds of that synopsis,i would guess the villain is Gary Mitchell but apparently the JJverse version of him has been done already in the comics.

Dr.Roger Korby maybe?

Wonder if producers have managed to lure Leonard Nimoy one last time? The whole 'differing timelines' thing worked for me. I would imagine the next X-Men - First Class film will work in a similar way, now Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart(officially signed - see Bryan Singer's Tweets) and Hugh Jackman(just a formality, but pretty much already there) are onboard.

loving the new poster!

Hopfully we'll see something Start Trek has always backed away from (due to expense i'd imagine) full alien cities.

To be honest, I hope not - the last film gave his Spock a decent ending and it's time for Quinto to set out his stall properly as the new version of the character.

Ok, so having seen the trailer, here's what I think.

Cumberbatch is NOT Khan. I know he talks about vengeance, but I think unleashing hell against Earth because he was expelled 300 years ago will be a bit 'megalomanic' for the sequel. Plus they'll have to establish who he is, why he's now in the 24th century etc etc.

I think he's an original villain, someone along the lines of Gary Mitchell, but not. Also, in keeping with trying to make Trek relevant to present day events, I reckon we might be seeing a Middle East Crisis parallel, kind of like the Maquis episodes of DS9/TNG.

Cumberbatch is a Starfleet officer who used to live in a system that was given to the Klingons in a peace treaty. His world was promptly ravaged and he wants vengeance against both Earth and the Klingons (hence the war zone the Enterprise has to track him to later). Of course, this is just me guessing.

And Alice Eve is Carol Marcus... who is doing something.
