I'm fast losing interest in the dumbing down of Star Trek - bringing back Khan is just lazy.

I honestly couldn't be more conflicted.

I was under the impression that 'rebooting' the timeline was a way for the writers and crew to come up with new exciting adventures for Kirk and co. I had hoped that all the speculation about Khan was tabloid fodder as it was generally the only 'well known villain'. Personally, while Khan is a great character, I've never felt he was 'The Joker of Star Trek'. The only reason his appearance had any relevance was because Spock died at the end and that was only because they were both fighting in a nebula with no shields. Khan was easily outwitted as he had no experience in three dimensional space combat.

Anyway, by introducing him I can't see the motivation, the angle or the point except to attract the masses, which I thought would have been easy enough to do anyway considering the popularity of the last film.

However saying that, Cumberbatch is a great actor and although he doesn't look like a 'Singh', I'm curious about what he'll do in the role and how it'll tie into the Klingons.

I'm sure the story will be fascinating, I just wish they hadn't gone down this route.

Speaking from a personal POV this is a really boring way to go as I've already seen the stories with Khan, what was the point of rebooting the whole Trek canon, at great cost as it's pissed off a lot of the hardcore fanbase, simply to make variations on existing stories? It'd be like EON announcing that Daniel Craig's next outing is a remake of From Russia With Love.

If it is Khan I wont be surprised considering the screenwriters are known for reusing old ideas but I'll also be quite disappointed that they couldn't come up with a new enemy. And they'll never top Montablan's performance.

Still think if they were going to go down this road Naveen Andrews would have been the way to go. Not that they should have gone this way in the first place.

I don't have a problem with Cumberbatch being Khan at all. I'm a long time Star Trek fan and I absolutely loved the reboot. The point of the reboot was not to create new stories - you don't have to reboot it to do that - it was to attract a new audience. Khan has become part of Start Trek lore and he's one of, if not the, most well known adversary. It'd be like rebooting Batman without The Joker, Superman without Lex Luthor and Sherlock without Moriarty. I'd love to see a new take on Khan and I also can't wait to see what JJ does with the Klingons.

People think it's a cop-out bringing back Khan but it's much harder to that and do it well than to create someone new.

Who cares if it's Khan? They are planning new takes on existing Trek tropes and stories. Let them put their spin on it, it won't take anything away from Ricardo Montalban and his mighty chest.

Disappointed that its Khan.Couldnt they come up with a new enemy? We already had Khanesque villains for the last two Trek films now they are actually going the whole hog by doing Khan all over again! as good an actor as Cumberpatch is, he wil never be as good as Montalban.

Hi, first time poster here. Just read the first and last pages. Some, er, interesting stuff. Didn't know Trekkers did so much acid. Man.
I need to read more about Mr Cumberbatch's role in all this but to be honest, if he was revealed as the new live-action Postman Pat or Noddy, I'd watch it. A great choice methinks.

That sounds awesome. Can Martin Freeman be Big Ears?

I am uncertain of the new uniforms, linked above. The caps and cut of the costume is a little too familiar and not "science fiction" enough. This being said, the original uniforms in the 1960s TV series were really just a jumper and trousers tucked into boots.
