I too hope they stay away from Khan.  I'd be more than happy with some kind of Klingon mischief, but Khan would feel a little too neat, as if the new movies were simply replacing all tha's gone before.  As it stood at the end of Trek 11 everything that had previously happened to Kirk and Spock in Nimoy/Shat timeline still exists, I kinda liked that. If they re-do Khan, they might as well go the whole hog and bring back the whales in Trek 13.

As a side note, rewatching Trek 11 last night on Blu Ray was phenomenal.  Tonally, it is just handled perfectly and I can't see any movie dislodging it from my number 2 spot for the year (number 1 spot is held by Up).  Love it.

Hope I'm not becomming a geeky Trekker like rgirvan...... oooops too late, I just series linked Star Trek TOS on CBS Action.......

That'd be Star Trek 14.

interesting to see how this new crew plays out in some original plots similar to trek novels.

Bob Orci has let out some details about the 'tone' of the second film in an interview.

Second movies, including Wrath of Khan, are often the dark chapter. Things often get pretty intense. Are you going to go in that direction?

Orci: Well, itís weird. We got kind of a mixed review in terms of the darkness or not in the first one. There was genocide of an entire planet, Spockís freaking mother died, Kirkís dad diedÖ But itís like, "Well, it wasnít very dark!"

So I think maybe thematically, because we donít have the burden of an origin story, we can play a little bit more with the theme and it can be a little bit more complicated. But I still think we like fun. Star Trek has always been funny. Even Wrath of Khan has got some great great, great fun in it. I think it will be equally confusing for some, but I do think we get to jump right into it now.

Khan wasn't dark. And I can see why they wouldn't go "dark" - Nemisis was dark and it was the lowest grossing Trek movie. Voyage Home, until last years, was the highest grossing. People just enjoy hanging out with the crew.

I get the idea from what Bob Orci is saying that they are going to ignore Star Trek 'history' even more in the next one . Which is fine by me as it allows for a fresh take on things .
I love alternate timelines , why cant we all have one .

As long as they simply don't do the old stories...but different!

Although a pre credit sequence where Kirk and Co pursue Harry Mudd and his deadly fembots would be pretty awesome.

'khan' not dark?

we have kirk depressed about not being captain, khan unleashed leads to scientists being tortured/killed, starfleet officers brainwashed into almost killing their own, enterprise sustaining multiple casualties and battle damage during an ambush and a much loved character dies a painful death thru radiation sickness.

not really light viewing.

'nemesis' was dark cos it was pale copy of 'khan', hence its low box office.

But Khan did all of that with style and a certain amount of class - even though that stuff is all in there, the film never forgets it is a high seas adventure.

Nemisis had no style about it and took "super depressing" to mean "dark" to mean "good".

Meyer was offered the Nemesis job but turned it down cause he couldn't re-write the script (Mr. Brent Spiners best friend was given that job). What a lost chance.

Would a Meyer Star Trek work in todays world with its demands on big FX sequences? I'm sure he would make an interesting story, but Paramount now consider this a Big Event.

That said, if he wanted to write the script for the new film I would be totally down with that.

mr meyer had to work with restricted budgets on his trek movies-though he turned that into a virtue.

wonder what he would do with a $200mil+ budget for a trek movie?

think any villian they come up with will be khan lite.
actually using khan would be desperate move.

the concept of space itself as a villain is interesting.
but the key to the next film should be exploration, adventure on a strange new world.

They already did Khan in the last film. And the one before that.

One aspect of Enterprise that I thought was interesting was the 'Terra Prime' group, a bunch of xenophobic humans that were against the idea of the Federation, aliens on Earth and all that good stuff.

I think considering general religious intolerance and society's inability to accept each other's differences, this would be an interesting angle to take - a terrorist group who don't want the Vulcan refugees becoming the 'intergalactic trash of the galaxy' or something equally bigoted.

So we can rule out Tom Hardy's Picard and the gang arriving in the 23rd century to undo the changes to the timeline in the last movie. Kirk vs Picard? I'll get my coat.

But thats kinda already been done with Undiscovered Country.

As for Kirk vs Picard - I would not be at all surpirsed if a future film had Picard come from the future to set things right, sacrificing himself for the greater good - an inversion on Generations.

Nah - everything that needed to be said about the Borg was said in First Contact. There isn't much else you can with a race with a hive mind - esp in comparison to the other races.

Klingons are going to be in there - they haven't really had much of a cinematic outing since Generations in 1994, and even there they were more henchmen. But it is all a question of how the Klingons are used which will be interesting.

Maybe the Vulcans are relocated to a planet that the Klingons have a disputed claim to. Israel / Palestine in space?

Looking at The Dark Knight as a model or platform to base a Trek sequel on sounds great to me . Darker aspects of Trek lore are few and far between really although i can imagine a Klingon based story that would utilise such basis .

Emotions sound like they are going to play a major role with the characters which can only be good for the story . Lets hope we get an Empire Strikes Back type deal and not a Revenge Of The Fallen .
