POPULAR! you're gonna be popular!
I'll teach you the proper ploys,
when you talk to boys,
little ways to flirt and flounce, ooh!
I'll show you what shoes to wear!
how to fix your hair!
everything that really counts to be...

POPULAR! i'll help you be popular!
you'll hang with the right cohorts,
you'll be good at sports,
know the slang you've got to know.
so let's start,
'cause you've got an awfully long way to go!

In Goodfellas defense, when I've been using the search engine recently I haven't been able to find any threads inactive for over a year, which would have been this thread. So he may not have been able to find it either.

In the forum's defenses you need to change the drop down box at the top from showing active threads for the past 180 days, to show all threads...

I've been doing that prior to one year stuff, but the option isn't always there. Not all of the time admittedly, but sometimes.

That was, in fact, the reason I couldn't find it, I did do a search before posting the thread.

Some of the Welsh posters here may remember and indeed appreciate this gem of a film released in 1978:

"Grand Slam" part one

For part two and onwards see here:

"Grand Slam" part two

"Don't fight it love"

Windsor Davies' (playing Mog Jones) striptease is hilarious, as are his scenes in the prison cell, the airport, tour coach and the rest of it. Mr. Lloyd Evans and Maldwyn make for cracking support too. Just watch it.

I'm still fairly new (very compared to most, but it's all relative, right?) and have only just found this thread.
I was born in Hampshire but mum is welsh and I moved to Aberystwyth when I was 4 and I am equally half and half. Depends who I'm talking to I guess. I prostitute myself when confronted by drunken Scots or Irish and get all valleys-man when dealing with arsehole English.
Oddzag, how long you been in Aber? Do we know each other? Fancy a pint in the Glen at Xmas? Thanks Bubba for bigging up Aber? Straight2dvd is mad for the 'only just better than Cardigan' jibe. I feel blessed that I was lucky enough to grow up in a place as open and good natured as Aber.
As we used to sing at the rugby
"we're the boys from Aberystwyth
we're the ones that you get pisses with
we're the ones that shag your missus.................
Aber boys are we........"
Thank you. And lets keep this thread alive. We owe it to Wales. And more talk of Cawl please. And welsh rarebit? Mmmmmm. What kind of sicko doesn't love cheesey cheese on toast?

Nice to see that Wales has broadband in rural areas rather than the cities. Hang on we have i'm using it right now in the Swansea Valleys.

Hey, I only speak it these days with my Nan. And she's too deaf to be able to correct me. I spoke it fluently til I was 8, then my school closed (Trefenter) 'cos there was only 9 of us in it
Moved to Plascrug in Aber and just lost the ability. I can understand what people say to me most of the time but my vocabulary is shot. Feel free to correct me as and when necessary.

You need to take the first step, use animal blood and start drawing things on the cave walls. Is Dan-yr-Ogof nearby? Arthur C. Clarke would be proud of you.

It's fine. Welsh is difficult at the best of times. The mutations, knowing when to use a masculine/feminine term etc. If you say "gwnai wele ti" or "wele ti" just means "I'll see you". There's a great moment in an episode of "Midsomer Murders" (a.k.a. County Genocide)  where Phil Madoc's (1) character says to Jason Hughes's character: "are you Welsh boy?" and then "wnai wele ti". Which just seems out of place in an English language drama but it was great nonetheless.

1. He has a fantastic speaking voice. Deep and authortitative.

Yes Ruth Madoc is Phil Madoc's ex-wife. I've never been to Dan-yr-Ogof!

Unfortunately, the usual depiction of Welsh guys can be a rather camp derivative - "Hiya boys!"

So, as an emphatic reposte. We should try and list all the manly Welshmen:

Richard Burton (R.I.P)
Windsor Davies
Stanley Baker (R.I.P)
Philip Madoc
Stuart Cable (R.I.P)
Jason Hughes
Michael Sheen

Anyone here who's moved from Cardiff to Bath?

you left out
Sir Anthony Hopkins, John Rhys-Davies, Jonathan Pryce, Christian Bale, Timothy Dalton, Bette Davis (welsh father and too tough to leave out), Rob Brydon (ahem),
Ioan Gruffudd,
that's enough for now

On purpose as I asked others to in-chime.

A good list except I don't count Timothy Dalton nor Christian Bale as Welsh. Dalton was born in Colwyn Bay as far as I know but I think at a very young age he moved to England. Christian Bale was born in England and he and his family moved to West Wales for a while so I don't see how it qualifies him as Welsh.

Matthew Rhys should be added to that list I think. Anyone else?

On a separate topic. I heard that both Tommy Lee Jones and Treat Williams have Welsh roots. Am I right?

And Robert Duvall loves football and rugby!
I thought Bale had welsh blood, no? And Timothy Dalton can apply for a welsh passport so he definitely counts. He also made one of the very best Bond films.....

No, I'm sure Christian Bale has no connections to Wales other than once upon a time he lived in Pembrokeshire as a wee lad.

In regards to Dalton. Technically speaking there is no Welsh passport but his birthplace would be listed as 'Colwyn Bay' or wherever it is. He's my favourite 007, I didn't cast any aspersions on his acting ability.

I think it's great Robert Duvall loves rugby!

Yes my mistake, you're right he was born in Haverfordwest. However, it seems he moved to Bournemouth and elsewhere when he was very young. I think it's a tenuous link and he said himself that he's been labelled Welsh because he was only born there but didn't grow up in Wales.
