Definitely one of the best, but I prefer Taxi Driver and One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest

No, I wouldn't.
Not a fan of The Godfather films. Not a fan.

Same here. I just don't see what's so special.

How about the incredible and universal story, the best acting in any film ever made, amazing cinematography, a mesmerizing score and brilliant directing? Remember that The Godfather isn't just a simple gangster film about life in the Mafia like Goodfellas is, but rather a story about family, a fathers love for his youngest son and that sons quest for approval and respect.

My personal favorite movie of the 70's and all time is A L I E N,but if your talking greatest movie of the 70's it's THE GODFATHER hands down unbeatable. It's one of the greatest movies of cinema history, with all time highs in acting from all the cast, none of who have ever matched let alone beat there brillant prefomance's in this powerhouse of a movie. The story it self has so manny threads to it,Family, power, hate ,love, etc and is just so well scripted. The 70's had so many brillant classic movies, but overall this one stands out the most,as a true bench mark in the history of cinema.

One of the better film of the 1970's but by no means the best at all, it has too much competition...

Taxi Driver, The Last Picture Show, Days of Heaven, Annie Hall, Apocalypse Now, Chinatown, The Exorcist, The French Connection, The Conversation, MASH, Network, Alien, Mean Streets...So many more could compete with The Godfather.

I too prefer Part II of the trilogy as well.

I prefer Part II myself but the original would be my number two, special mentions to Apocalypse Now, Last Picture Show, Jaws and Chinatown.

No. Although it's definitely top 5, I think part 2 is even better. At this moment my vote goes to The Deer Hunter, closely followed by The Outlaw Josey Wales.

I used to like The Godfather more than its sequel but now I think I prefer Part 2, so I have voted 'no', the finest film is either Part 2 or Apocalypse Now

Nope...

I don't think you can have a BEST of anything, decade or otherwise. There is no definitive to these things. At the time there was a climate for gangster films but really that mafioso thing is pretty loathsome and ignorant and to keep watching such subject matter is bad for the brain. Obviously it is well made and clearly imbued with great reference. But the narrative is not universally engaging. It's pretty difficult to relate to many of these characters unless you've had some kind of build-up to this genre.

For me personally while I appreciated it's brilliance I've never been compelled to rewatch it.

It's strange - people vote The Godfather among the best films ever made, but yet don't choose it as the best of the 70s .

It would certainly be up in my list of the best films of all time but Part II is superior and i think i would rate Mean Streets, Alien, Jaws, The Conversation and the French Connection above it

Recently I got the Godfather box set on Blu-ray because those films have been a bit of a gap in my film appreciation. I had seen all three films before many years ago on television and while I liked them, they didn't make as much of an impact on me as I felt they should considering their classic status. Maybe it was that with Gordon Willis' way of shooting the film (very dark, few close ups)it  just didn't draw me in when watched on a small telly. This time round watching the films on my projector, I was completely drawn in and absolutely blown away. I like the subtlety of the direction most, how the films don't hammer points home, but let you discover things from your self.

The first two films are as good as it gets, though so many brilliant films came out of the 70s that it's difficult to decide. I'd put the first two Godfather films alongside Chinatown, Days of Heaven, Close Encounters, Nashville, Don't Look Now, Barry Lyndon, Annie Hall, Alien, Fear Eats the Soul and The Last Picture Show.

Godfather isn't even the best Godfather film in the 70s

I was sort of talking about the first two films if that's what you mean. Watching them back to back as I just did, they feel seamless, like one film.

Agreed, though my favourite '70s movies are probably The Last Picture Show and Chinatown.

Sorry, I hadn't read your post, I was just responding to the poll

Personally I see the split quite easily - but then, I have issues with Brando. Amongst other things.

The Godfather is a good film,,,,,,but the greatest of the 70s?? N ah, least ways not for me. I like it well enough but I just don't think it deserves the adoration. It's a great image revamp for the Mafia...it turned a bunch of psycho drug dealing protection racket murderers into some noble group of wise men who love family, honour and respect. Tell'ya..'The Freshman' is a better film ;)

I like the Godfather but in my opinion Godfather Part two is the best of the seventies, followed very closly by Taxi Driver and Jaws.

I can't say whether it's the best, since I'm yet to watch following films:
The French Connection
Conversation
Chinatown
One Flew Over Cuckoo's Nest
Mean Streets
Jaws
Alien
Rocky
Annie Hall
All The President's Men
Deer Hunter
Apocalypse Now
Serpico
Dog Day Afternoon
I hope this gives you the idea. I'm only 14 though
But from what I've seen, The Godfather is my favourite, and I consider it the best. I think it's better than Part II because of Brando and Caan, and better than Taxi Driver because it has an awesome ensemble cast as opposed to one amazing central performance and a few great peripheral ones. It also looks better than TD...
Love all 3 though :)

Definitely one of the best, but not the best, as I prefer A Clockwork Orange, Eraserhead, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Watership Down, so I voted no. Still a brilliant film, though.

Technically Godfather Pt II is better... but taxi driver is better than that.
